15. Pressed Flower

This is going up real early in the morning since I’ll be at the office during when I normally post this, haha. Imagine that, a week where I’m not at home to post this for once.

「Thank you for your always delicious tea.」

Finishing drinking her black tea, Lydia smiled at her maid Katherine while thanking her.

「Using those kind words on me is more than I deserve. But, I am happy it suits Lydia-sama’s tastes.」

Exactly as stated, Katherine happily returns a happy-seeming smile. At her master who had come to show an honest facial expression if it’s with her, Katherine feels delighted. If it’s the other servants, during the times they are thanked, they become self-conscious and freeze up. In that case, it’s charming, and among the servants, her master doesn’t know her popularity.
Because anyone who freezes up causes her master to become anxious, only the gardener’s apprentice can calm her down when she is worked up. If you remove the family members, this beginning of being herself, was very honorable.
Again, when she thinks about her acting identically towards the other servants, so they’ll be more relaxed, greed wells up. This was slowly anticipated and gradually eased with the extent the master’s state was seen.

If that is the case, the number one source of worry is what will become of Isaac-san, she thinks.

There were occasionally times when her master who returned from the garden’s face was red. For that reason, it reached the point that at the time her master returns, with tea leaves that have a relaxing effect, she would prepare tea and wait. She is unaware, but the gardener’s apprentice is skillful at making her master’s heart jolt. Her master who conducts herself appropriately for a prince or princess, only at times it concerned him, her emotions became abundant.  At times like that, the reality is she would feel like a younger girl.
It would be good if a day like that arrives quickly for her, Katherine thinks.
Suddenly, she saw her master looking at the garden from the terrace, and had a bad feeling.

「Lydia-sama, today, are you not going for a walk?」

It’s the time from afternoon until practice. Always, at the point in time she finishes her tea, she’s expected to be going towards the place of the gardener’s apprentice.
Lydia, with confusion contained in her eyes, gives Katherine a glance, and again returns her gaze towards the garden.

「What’s good to talk about, I don’t know……」

Up until now, things that made her happy, every time, she was reporting them to the gardener’s apprentice. Things that also are worrying her and so forth, she also had expressed. However, there is one thing she can’t say. That delightful expectation she cannot say is strange, and why she can’t say it, she can’t go to for consultation. With only that one thing, even other things, recently, became hard to talk about.
When Lydia made small fists and hung her head, Katherine gave a few words.

「Is it fine if you talk to me?」

「Eh……?」

For Lydia who had not minded the alternative of not talking to him, her eyes widen. However, Katherine carelessly says.

「You do not have to talk about things you do not want to talk about. You should talk to someone who you can say things to.」

Because she does not say it, it does not mean it will become a secret, Katherine warns Lydia, then smiles. Now, her master may be feeling a sense of guilt like the times she is keeping a secret, she thinks. Since the party she participated in, given that she was absorbed in anxiety, something happened, that Katherine also noticed, and came with preparations. But, it was noble society. Limiting to what her master brought up, with the position of a servant, she cannot go to ask questions. Then, even if he is her master’s friend, the gardener’s apprentice is still a servant..By all means, there is no expectation for her to talk.

「But……」

「Lydia-sama, do you want to talk? Or, do you not want to talk?」

At Katherine’s question, Lydia confirms the nature of the inside of her own heart. Which way in the world is right?

「Either one……」

Half of her thinks she wants to talk, wants to ask, and after saying that is somewhat scary. However, for her, just what in the world is scary?

「Lydia-sama, please excuse me.」

Katherine accepts her refusal, and then takes Lydia’s hands in both of her own. There is heat introduced in her hand and the warmness of the smiling face in front of Lydia’s eyes.

「For the sake of Lydia-sama wanting to talk, I will do it. I am Lydia-sama’s attendant.」

It might be that she’s unreliable, but when Lydia shakes her head no, Katherine has a little bitterness show on her smiling face. For the heart of the manner, at the kindness of not asking, tears are seeming to come out.

「Thank you.」

Restraining herself, Lydia smiles.
Thanks to Katherine, a little bit of resolution came out.

「……I’m going for a stroll.」

「Please take care.」

Pushed by Katherine’s words, Lydia went towards the garden.
Today, given that he was working at a place you can see from the terrace, before long she arrived near the gardener’s apprentice.

「Zack……」

「Ojou.」

Holding a basket where a mountain of weeds was coming out, the gardener’s apprentice looks in Lydia’s direction.

「U, um……」

She thinks she has to say something, but the words won’t come out without delay. The resolution to meet came, but she hadn’t yet decided on what to talk about.
In the time she is lost for words, the gardener’s apprentice exchanged a word or two with his father, and passed the basket he was holding to him.

「You came at the exact right time. Ojou, will you come to the garden together with me?」

He presents his hand with a smiling face. Is it his garden, that small plaza with the sunny spot used for self study?
Because he has something to do, towards Lydia who cannot speak successfully, he is a lifesaver. Lydia took the presented hand.
It isn’t different from the previous time, using the unguided path and being guided. However, given that there isn’t chaos like before, for which directions to go on the grounds, there is a destination, and she generally understood. At the time they go through the bush to enter the plaza, she’s given a large cloth to wrap her dress with so leaves won’t stick to it. For the other held hand, at that time she understood the reason for holding the cloth.
When she arrives at the plaza, there isn’t the heat of summer but dazzling light pours in.

「What…… is this?」

As for the garden, there is the unchanged owl of the water found, and there isn’t a large change, she thinks. But, with only one look at her feet, she’s surprised at the large change.

「I bought seeds and transplanted them」

The person who changed it smiles with complete satisfaction. The garden of the lawn was changed completely into white clovers.

「Zack did this alone……?」

「That’s right.」

When Lydia, who isn’t believing, hears it, and she tilts her head in confusion at the person opposite her. Although the plaza is small, there’s a lot of surface. Replacing the original surface of the garden with white clovers is something that takes a great effort, she thinks, and he calmly nods his head. Didn’t he say the work he has is painful?

「Please walk as you’d like, Ojou.」

Even further, he smiles and says that to Lydia, who can’t believe it.
When Lydia is bewildered, a little after showing an attitude of thinking a little, he gives a suggestion.

「Then, shall we dance together?」

She’s surprised at those unbelievable words from him. Before he was only following Lydia for practice, but she tries to walk over of the white clovers until she’s invited to a dance she doesn’t think she’ll like.

「I cannot, the things that Zack specially raised…..!」

The lovely round mitsubas completely stretch out. She can’t see the passageway where the flowers are withered or dying. Unable to bring herself to trample them in a lively way, even more so when she knows the person who raised them.

「It’s fine, it’s fine.」

However, the person in question smile, and pulled Lydia by the hand.

「Wait……!」

The boy who was a gardener’s apprentice, when he pulls Lydia towards himself, he starts to dance the basics of waltz. With practice, things work out. It was different from their ordinary practice, and there was an intent for a plan when Lydia takes a walk, and he takes the lead.
Since there is a lead, reflexively Lydia follows. He isn’t a boy dabbling in it, his whole body has become accustomed to the basics of dance.

「As expected, dancing is hard, huh.」

「Naturally.」

At the boy who sarcastically laughs at that, Lydia becomes angry in return. Here there is neither a dance hall nor ordered cobblestone. The soil’s feel is unstable, and the steps briefly shake. The gardener’s apprentice who is dancing an awkward waltz is having fun.
Lydia, who can’t help but accompany him and dance, isn’t unsatisfied. His actions are always never explained beforehand, but this time his actions haven’t been explained yet.
Concealing how she got angry, Lydia asks.

「What are you intending?」

「Hmm…… that’s still a bit of a secret.」

She looks at the boy who smiles when he still can’t reveal anything. At the time he can’t start talking, as if he arranged it beforehand, there is something he can’t talk about. She shouldn’t know anything by chance, but he thought about if Lydia knew everything. Then, he immediately denied it.
Why is he so good at timing? It’s a sly aspect of him.
She knows he has a secret, and her throat felt like it became blocked.

「……Zack.」

「Hm?」

「I also have something I can’t say.」

「Yep.」

「……but, this time, I will say it.」

「I see. Then, I’ll also tell you.」

Her soft voice trembled, but at that, he pretends not to notice it with a warm smile on his face like this sunny spot, and accepts Lydia’s words.
With the general tune of their waltz, they circled around the water fountain with the owl on it several times, and then parted for that day.
Two days later, a visitor arrived at the Ernest estate. Lydia and her father Geordo, together, go out to meet this guest.

「Welcome, please come in, your Highness.」

Imitating her father, Lydia pinched the hem of her skirt and bows.

「You’re a busy person, so I’m sorry. The Duke’s garden is said to be famous. I wanted to see it just once.」

「Then, Lydia can guide you to the garden.」

「Ahh, this way.」

The first prince has his attendant come with official papers. Then, those are handed to Geordo.

「I want the Duke to consider leading the Three Ministries.」

「……I will look at it」

Geordo, not showing his inner surprise in the slightest, receives the papers with a calm smile, and looks over it. Understanding the outline, Geordo slightly widened his eyes.

「This is, His Highness……」

「He is aware it is a rough place. However, when he thinks of preparing a research organization, it’s better to be quick. Because there are people who doubt, it will become the basis for silence.」

「Certainly, it may not be the best plan at the moment, you know.」

Geordo lets out a forced smile. With his superiors’ heavy-handedness, especially with the contents he interpreted, he could it, but Geordo, when presented with a practical plan, has no choice but to nod.

「With the sudden change, you’ll provoke opposition.」

「Then, for when I return to the castle, may I have your answer?」

「I look forward to working with you.」

Towards the smiling first prince who had frightening expectations for the future, Geordo smiles.

「Dia, I have a bit of work, so is it okay if I entrust this to you?」

「I understand.」

When Geordo requests it, Lydia nods her head, and guides the first place to the place where there are many fall flowers blooming. Given that the letter was a preliminary announcement, with that, the terrace where one can have tea and other places is prepared. Purple thistles and autumn bellflowers, and blue turf lilies look nice, and yellow chrysanthemums and patrinias are arranged by a welcome mat, and glossy abelias in the interior are modestly peeping out. If one changes their line of sight a little, you’ll find peach pink Dianthuses, Western style cate whiskers, and Clematises are there with noticeable globe amaranths providing a good accent. From where does that sweet smell come from, if you search for the origin, in the forest the fragrance of an orange fragrant olive tree is peeking out. [T.N: THIS ENTIRE SECTION WAS PURE PAIN]
At the sight of autumn flowers in full bloom, a breath of admiration leaks out from the first prince.

「So this is how it blooms in fall……」

Towards the first prince who said the blooming fall flowers were splendid, Lydia felt a sense of pride inside. The skill of her house’s gardeners isn’t normally recognized, but she was happy that they earned a response from other people.

「It’s a style of blooming that leaves behind its natural appearance. You can’t see this in the castle.」

「I will humbly receive His Majesty’s praise, our house’s gardeners will also gratefully accept it.」

Turning towards the smiling face of the first prince, that dazzling appearance, for a moment she seemed to shake, but for the sake of accomplishing the duty she had been entrusted from her father for their guest, Lydia endured. As the duke’s daughter she ought to not feel ashamed and entertain, thought Lydia as she encourages herself.
Incidentally, Katherine the maid made tea, and the two of them sat down. Then, because the first prince’s attendants moved back, and judging it to be necessary to order people to leave, Lydia also refrained from giving Katherine instructions.
Confirming there were only two people in the fall garden, the first prince happily smiles.

「Then, at least I can be comfortable.」

「Your Highness……」

「Lydia-sama.」

Getting a look of requesting a correction, Lydia corrected herself.

「……Roy-sama.」

「Yep.」

The first prince, Roy, nodded his head in complete satisfaction. Towards the innocent prince who is different from the time he was facing her father, Lydia’s mental tension slightly loosened.

「However, my visit hasn’t finished yet, you know. The Ernest Duke is especially busy.」

「Well, given that it would be good if my father has more days off, this was a good chance.」

「Then, I accidentally gave him more work, huh. As expected, afterwards I will apologize.」

Receiving Lydia’s words, Roy gives a strained smile. He recalls talking back and forth with his father, and Lydia asks.

「As for that, was my father absolutely necessary?」

Because she felt a factor of politics, specifically, she asks the only point she didn’t hear that she was concerned about.

「Yes.. Control of the educational institutions, the duke…… it’s in Lydia’s father’s jurisdiction, so I directly asked him.」

「Roy-sama is interested in this country’s education because of his youth?」

At Lydia who was looking with a gaze that held a sense of pure respect, Roy stared in amazement and burst into laughter, seeming to find something amusing.

「That…… The truth is, I only wrote something rather self-indulgent like that……」

「Eh……?」

Having a personal, exaggerated detail revealed to her, this time Lydia’s eyes widened.

「Maybe, if my father looks, it will immediately be exposed. Therefore, under the cover of a marriage candidate interview this time, I wanted to lay the groundwork with Duke Ernest.」

「His Majesty can’t find out……?」

「Yes. It’s because I’m trying to do something without certainty.」

Therefore, if the king became aware, he would stop, said Roy.

「……I, sooner or later will become king. I don’t have any feelings about abandoning that right and duty. However, one more desire came out. Just a little struggle I should try out, I thought.」

「A struggle……」

What unsuitable words from him, she thought. Even so, Lydia’s eyes saw the determination in his honey colored eyes.

「So, I wanted someone to cooperate.」

Gazed at by straightforward honey eyes, Lydia looked back.

「Me……?」

「Yes. This visit, pretending to be thanking for visiting my birthday, this is an interview with my fiance candidate.」

Roy, at the time he saw the list of those to visit handed over by his retainer, had put on an easy to understand smile. He met everyone on the list, and Lydia is the last.

「The Ernest house is an originally neutral house, and the post leader of the Three Ministries, without neutrality, will not function properly. Someone with that family status and lineage is most suited as my fiance.」

Lydia was thinking it was suitable for both of her parents, and concerning her own merit, she hadn’t thought about it. However, Lydia understands a princess who leans towards any influence of nobility is undesirable.

「I want to postpone it until graduating from the academy. At that time, there is a fiance that will keep my retainers silent. If possible, a person who understands is good.」

Even though entering the academy is how many years away, at how he focused until the distant future, Lydia is lost for words. Is he really a young boy who is different in only one or two ways?

「Then, if I individually marry for political reasons, Lydia-sama…… is good. May I have your cooperation?」

At Roy being all smiles and facing towards her with an honest gaze, Lydia straightened up her spine. She can’t make a careless reply. Having said that, until now, it isn’t expected that Lydia immediately replies to the matter extended to her.
At the appearance Lydia is worrying about her reply, Roy’s forced smile changes to a kind look.

「It’s fine if you don’t reply immediately. After we get to know each other, I want you to confidently decide if I’m sufficient.」

「That’s, that feels like I am testing Roy-sama……」

「It’s fine, you know. That’s your right. I was trying to use you. You would be bearing risk and an excessive disadvantage, so you should use me too.」

Using the first prince, Roy, how discourteous. The disadvantage he spoke about, with an engagement to royalty, there will be many restrictions that come forward, and in the case the engagement is cancelled, Lydia will be blamed. From Roy’s manner of speaking, according to the result of his conduct, an engagement cancellation is likely.
For the response to Roy, it is something that will decide the future hereafter. This isn’t something you can undertake with only respect and affection. Lydia, for a moment, hesitates, and accepts the fact she cannot answer now.

「May I humbly think over it?」

「Of course, That’s my intention.」

Sweetly smiling, Roy drank enough black tea. When Lydia followed and drank tea, she felt her throat moisten. It seems she was nervous.
Although it was drawing close to the end, right after only one thing was weighing on her mind, Lydia asks.

「In the case I refuse, what will Roy-sama do?」

「I’ll have no choice but to pick from the other candidates. Because I wasn’t able to have a conversation with them like Lydia-sama, I won’t explain.」

Without hesitation, a reply of finding a clear decision was returned. Not having it explained or having it explained, which way is horrible, she thinks. Lydia feels sincerity for the way of having it explained. Although noble daughters are political tools, it isn’t as good being used unknowingly.
How about other daughters? For some who yearns for Roy, someone who wants power, since the potential to become queen is there, even know it, they will accept the conditions. However, for the sake of blocking engagement cancellations, the person in question will pressure him from his surroundings. There’s no mistaking it, it will be inconvenient for Roy.
She looks at Roy who is looking at the garden while drinking tea. Truly, he’s a boy whose appearance towers above paintings of angels. And then, his intelligence is excellent. Lydia respects the boy who posses more than the appearance of a prince. When they previously met, there was an ordinary adoration, but he actually meets and talks with the people of the country, and shows respect to his retainers. Right now, he’s relaxed as a prince, and it’s an honor to be friends with a calm prince, she thinks.
She can’t imagine herself as queen yet, but if this is a place where he let his guard down, then to that much, she wants to help, Lydia thinks.

「……which reminds me, is it okay to reveal the truth of the interview to a marriage candidate yet?」

「It’s because I won’t conceal it from a friend.」

A marriage candidate being aware of the purpose for Roy’s interview this time, isn’t there a risk of an information leak? She thinks about it and asks, and facing a dazzling smile that’s trusting her, Lydia believes he trusts her. There is no way she will willingly betray him with his faith in her.

「Besides, from now on, using this chance, I want to get in touch with Duke Ernest.」

「So I am an excuse.」

「Because talking with Lydia-sama is fun, contacting the duke must be remembered next.」

Roy’s words aren’t a lie, she understands through his facial expression. Because of that, Lydia also relaxes her appearance.

「It can’t be helped, can it? Please use that excuse to that extent.」 [T/N: Literally “I will let you use it to that extent”]

「Thank you.」

At Lydia’s purposeful sighing words, Roy gives his thanks, not just on the surface. That’s a boy whose smiling face you can’t hate, Lydia thinks. This is the charisma of royalty, isn’t it?

「I thought Roy-sama was a gentler person.」

She didn’t think he is hiding a will that is strong and forces his selfishness through, until he used political maneuvers. The method is considerably different, but is very childish.

「Do you hate that kind of me?」

「I do not hate it.」

Rather, Lydia feels that she likes the smiling face that feels age appropriate. At Lydia’s reply, Roy smiled, seeming happy.

「Is that so. I, knowing that I have age appropriate feelings, am very happy. Being unreasonable is also fun.」

The method is unusual, Lydia thought, but was silent at Roy’s smiling face.
Because Lydia doesn’t not have a strong feeling of wanting to struggle to that extent, she thinks she’s a little jealous. Sometimes he has a strong feeling of sticking to your own opinion, it seems. When that time comes, if she can act like him, that will be good.
Now, with him, facing each other, she should give an answer to the question that was given. Until she faces Roy, she was feeling a great sense of anxiety, but rather than talk with him, Lydia had courage. The inner light that dwelt in the pupils that gave the impression of Nigella flowers, Lydia didn’t notice it.
Several days after the marriage candidate interview, when Lydia went out for a walk and was greeted by the gardener’s apprentice.

「Today, for sure, will you teach me?」

「Ahh.」

When Lydia asked, he easily discloses his secret and nodded his head. Getting permission from his father, the two of them go to the plaza with the owl fountain. When they go underneath the hedge, an unusual carpet of white clovers was spread out.
The gardener’s apprentice who entered before looks over his shoulder when Lydia steps in.

「I want to give Ojou happiness.」

「Ha……?」

At the sudden detail, Lydia can’t understand. Happiness isn’t something you can present like an object.

「Yes.」

The gardener’s apprentice put something on Lydia. Her head passed through that large thing, and it fell on her shoulders. There was a hoop made of white clovers.

「Four leaves……」

The necklace made of white clovers was entirely made of four leaf clovers. The happiness he said, she realizes this is a symbol of good luck. But, the four clovers are expected to be rare, so Lydia is surprised at how these are here.

「That’s not all that’s here.」

When he prompts her and crouches down, she is able to confirm the round mitsuba leaves are mixed in here and there with the four leaf clovers.

「How……」

She can’t believe it. The other day, there were only mitsubas.

「It’s because Ojou walked.」

「How……」

「Because, in that situation, the tracks where Ojou walked, happiness comes out. I don’t understand why Ojou isn’t lively, but if it’s the way Ojou’s feet diligently walked on the ground, it’ll be fine.」

She was surprised.
He wasn’t aware of what was troubling her, but with he came to give her this kind of encouragement. The result of his actions he decided on was scary. However, when he tied happiness to where she previously walked, with her eyes she verified the appearance she could see. Because it’s expected he doesn’t know what kind of things are worrying her, it does not mean he’s guaranteeing the result. Only that if it’s good to persevere, she’ll be aided. However, his guarantee it would be okay, is very hopeful.
She received courage for her talk with Roy, but he had unintentionally dispelled the anxiety that wasn’t going away. Her cheeks began to get hot.

「Eh!? Ojou!?」

The drops did not stop falling, and from her nigella flower-like eyes, tears flow. The gardener’s apprentice who saw that, gazes at her, flustered.

「Wa, wai…… I, I, was I insensitive……!? Although I don’t know anything, I’m sorry!! I only wanted Ojou to keep her strength……」

「I」

Interrupting his apologies from becoming worse, Lydia, as she was shedding tears, opened her mouth.

「The other day, at the party, I met His Highness.」

「Eh, yes.」

Although he stared in wonder as she began to talk, the gardener’s apprentice nodded his head to show he was listening.

「His Highness, Roy-sama, was magnificent. He’s skilled at leading a dance, he’s very kind, and his intelligence is overflowing.」

「Mhm.」

「Then, I became one of Roy-sama’s fiance candidates.」

「Yes.」

「Afterwards, I met again with Roy-sama, and learned that I seem to be the leading candidate.」

「Mhm.」

By him only nodding his head up and down, one by one in his mind the words he can understand spill.

「I, I certainly admired stories in the picture books where one became a prince’s princess. But, I didn’t think it would that would happen to me……」

「Mhm.」

「I was surprised, and I don’t understand what’s good to do…… the expectation is that it’s an honor as a noble’s daughter, although……」

「It’s very surprising, I think.」

He pats her head with a soft pon sound. When she looks up, she meets his copper-colored warm gaze.

「Even though I’m older than Ojou, marriage, let alone love, isn’t something I’ve thought of. Ojou, as it is, because you’ve been doing your best with practice, you’re over capacity.」

She’s surprised, at the affirmation this kind of anxiety is natural, she calms down. Naturally, her tears stop.

「Are you immediately deciding?」

「Roy-sama just met with me, so I can think about it……」

「Then, it’s fine to relaxedly think about it, right?」

It’s good the prince is a good guy, he said with a smile. Thinking that it’s okay to simply make the royal family wait, although he’s a fool, he has nerves of steel.

「Since Ojou is a child, she doesn’t have to think about suddenly difficult things, you know. I’ll do what’s right in front of me, and before long, I’ll understand what to do.」 [T/N: Literally “I’ll do what’s right in front of my eyes, and before long I’ll understand”, but I added the implied part for clarity.]

When he says that’s the way it is with a laugh, she ends up understanding. Because he says the words he’s thinking, they fall without change from his heart.

「That…… that is so. I’m still only a candidate.」

「That’s right.」

If she thinks that it’s fine not to be in a hurry, her heart considerably calms down.

「If Ojou becomes happy, then that’s fine.」

「Why am I the basis?」

「I don’t know the prince. Compared to a guy I don’t know, it’s better that Ojou is smiling.」

It’s an incredibly subjective feeling. She thinks she should point out how it’s disrespectful, but because Lydia’s happiness gradually rises, and she couldn’t.  Come to think of it, her father said it was okay for her to decide. Katherine the maid was also an ally and encouraged her. Lydia finally understood the reality that she is surrounded by people wishing for her happiness. Just how blessed was she?

「……Zack, these four leaf clovers, is it okay to pick a few of them for when we return?」

「It’s fine.」

She should make a bookmark of pressed flowers after returning, she thinks. Then, she decides to give it to her father who prays for her happiness as thanks.
What should she do for him? Because he raised these four leaf clovers, even if she gave him a bookmark, he doesn’t have books. When she wonders how she can convey her thanks and is staring at the four leaf clovers, next to her, he looks up at the sky.

「I see……」

「Zack?」

Curiously thinking about the dim looking appearance of the boy who is a gardener’s apprentice, when she calls his name, he returns a feeble smile.

「I’m an idiot. The whole time, I was thinking I can make the garden so Ojou can see it. But by chance, before I become an adult, Ojou may have already married and moved into another house.」 [T/N: Literally “moved to another house” or “married into another house”, so I combined them for clarity.]

It’s an everyday that Lydia vaguely thought would always continue.
Becoming aware that the end of this would come, Lydia’s eyes opened wide. To her, this was frightening. The realization that this everyday will not continue was frightening.
Again it seems she would cry, but at his added warm smile, she pressed that feeling down and stopped.

「I must not quickly become an adult.」

His words that he said, thinking of her, made her incredibly happy and still terribly sad.
In the garden filled with happiness, concealing just a bit of loneliness, were a girl and boy watching the flowers.

At the center of the royal capital, around the water fountain, the stone path around it forms a circular shape. Because it’s an important point for traffic, many carriages and people come and go.
I was sitting at the water fountain with a few frustrations. When I sit, my small feet dangle, swinging back and forth to kill time that I don’t know what to do with.
For a moment, the sound of running footsteps and a voice overlap.

「Isaac! Did you already come, sorry to keep you waiting!」

「You idiot!」

The boy who comes running up with all smiles on his face, I him when we pass each other.

He was surprised to be hit, and held the place he was hit with both hands. After, the silently screaming face of his older brother who seemed to be accompanying him turned pale. I mindlessly make a complaint at that sort of thing.

「You, you don’t understand, do you, sending that letter!」

「The letter to the Baumgartner family, Isaac said that, right?」

「Why do you think I’ve come!?」

Leo, who completely doesn’t understand the reason I’m getting mad, today has his hair dyed brown. Thanks to the concealment of his blonde hair that has high offensive attack power, I can look straight at him, but for being ready to pass through buildings, as expected to some extent there is a feeling of radiance. However, as for making a complaint, if I don’t look at him, nothing will change.
Leo sent a letter to my father as I designated. Until there, it was fine, because I said it might reach my father, there wouldn’t be any questions. I received the letter with an unbroken seal from my father, and in the middle of opening it I froze.
I couldn’t read. No, I can read single characters, but couldn’t completely understand the contents. That feeling, it strongly resembled the time I saw a question in classical Chinese class in high school of my past life, where you were to transcribe it into Japanese. Although I can’t read, somehow I was sure to try to read.
For a while I tried to stare at the letter, but because I didn’t find even a beginning of understanding, I relied on Ojou. Ojou saw the letter, and after being surprised at the pretty handwriting, deciphered the contents for me. Recently, with the poem studies that started, there was something quoted that appeared, it seems. It is a poem a noble would naturally know, but there is no way that commoners who cannot read would know.
Knowing that, I wondered if I was fighting. With that, hearing what kind of letter is from Ojou who is decoding it, if it’s a letter of challenge, I will answer it. Immediately, I revised and said certainly it is a request for my father’s work.

「You dismissed a commoner’s literacy rate!」

「……that, I am humbly sorry for that.」

When I finished saying my complaints, Leo, who seems to understand, right after looking at me, downheartedly apologized.

「My horizons are still narrow, truly……」

Even if he’s feeling down, this guy is thinking about such slightly difficult things, huh. For the sake of lifting his downward looking head, I lightly poke his forehead.

「It was only this time, however, because you know, from here on out, now you should conduct yourself better, right? That’s enough. As for the matter of the letter, if from next time you give me an itemized list, it’s fine.」

For the first time I saw a noble who tried to know the life of commoners, even up to appearing as one. I think his way of thinking is flexible and open-minded enough.

「……I will take proper measures.」

Leo spoke some unchildish words, then an age-appropriate smile showed on his face. That’s fine, but that smile is radiant and I accidentally squinted my eyes. This guy, what is he made of, it’s like he has the substance that makes a firefly squid emit light. As expected, I dislike it.
Although I met the boundary of looking him in the eyes, I saw the older brother who is something like a bodyguard. From a little while ago he was turning pale, faintly losing his mind, he seems to be a busy person. Leo’s wig, in order for them to easily pass as siblings, this brother’s hair color is matching.

「Certainly an escort came with you, right. This time, you shouldn’t get lost, you know.」

「Ahh, this time is fine.」

Leo firmly nods his head, making a fist.

「I understand, you know, but for an escort is only one person fine? Or, are there other ones that are hidden?」

「No, it’s only Mattheus. As for bringing others with me, he’s all that I need. It’s fine, he looks like this and he’s talented.」

He looks like this, when he says this, I accept it. I’m sorry, but from just a bit ago, because I am not looking at only such things such as his pale face, he appears to be a timid older brother.

「Do you want me to stop? But…… if Leo-sama will not come along, I will go by myself.」

For the brother who sighed like there’s no helping it, there’s a mood of habitual trouble.

「It’s difficult, isn’t it?」

「Yes it is. The other day, after all, when I lost sight of you, it is only in my head that it wasn’t as severe as expected, it wasn’t that kind of feeling……!」

「Mattheus is exaggerating.」

「You’re estimating it too lightly!!」

With Leo and his older brother, there’s an extreme difference in understanding. Maybe the brother’s ways are better suited. Leo’s social status is appropriately high.
Ah, now, however, I’m generally glad I punched him. Perhaps, is this the level of being accused of blasphemy? However, his brother made such a response. But, Leo isn’t getting mad, huh. If Leo wants you to have that kind of attitude, then let’s fix it.

「Ah, that’s right. I’m Isaac Baumgartner. Please take care of me today.」

「I am Mattheus. I am sorry for Leo saying something unreasonable.」

「No…… The fault is on me who said the idea.」

Towards Mattheus who was apologizing with his head hanging down, I also bowed the same amount. It’s impossible that a noble seriously does this. Because of my experience as something like an adult, I think it is better to make a serious reply than a suspiciously deceptive one.

「Nevertheless, Mattheus-san’s way is appropriate, you know.」

Mattheus-san, doesn’t change the topic of me coming, but is wearing well-tailored clothes. There is this kind of feeling of a merchant or some other kind of person with a little high standard of living. If this is the case, there isn’t a sense of not belonging downtown.

「For me, an ordinary knight, that kind of plain clothing suits me.」

「Although, you don’t lend me clothes.」

「That is no good, you know. What person would I be to lend Leo-sama my hand-me-downs!?」

At Leo who became angry, Mattheus-san turned pale in reply. From me, although the expectation for who became a knight is amazing, with Leo it’s fading. After, from this theory, what kind of person am I planning to lend clothes to……
First of all, for the sake of lending clothes, I decided to go to my house. Because Leo, who is unfamiliar with the area, is there, I select the easiest route to follow, but if you do that, we have to go through the marketplace with a lot of pedestrian traffic.

「In order to not lose sight of you like your brother envisions, Leo, I want you to hold his hand.」

The moment he hears my proposal, Mattheus-san shook his head with all of his might.

「I cannot do that! That sort of thing is disrespectful!!」

「Ehh, I also hold hands with people close to my age, so it’s a little……」

At the unsatisfied Leo, it’s bad, I think, and I apologize, and Mattheus-san is a little vague.
Last time was different, because of the wig it’s easy to disappear, and if we lose sight of him, it’s dangerous. I brisky scratch my head, and let out a sigh. There’s no helping it, with male bonding, as for holding hands not being fun, we’re on the same level.

「Let’s go. Mattheus-san, can you follow us?」

「Yes, it is no problem.」

When I head out leading Leo by the hand, Mattheus-san, with a salute, follows us from behind.
While walking, Mattheus-san talks.

「Ah, I’m an ordinary kid, so you don’t need to use polite language.」

「Understood. Then, you don’t need to use honorifics. Call me whatever you’d like.」

「Yay. Then, Mattheus-onii-chan.」  [T/N: Honestly thought about using “Big Brother Mattheus” for a while, but since I kept “Ojou-sama” I rolled with it. I also considered “Mister Mattheus” but that didn’t keep the familiarity as much.]

「Then, for you……」

「Going that far with Leo-sama is unreasonable. Because it is done for acting at the critical moment, please give me your forgiveness.」

「Only Isaac is sneaky, isn’t he?」

「Why are you acting envious?」

I think that Mattheus whose loyalty had remained from childhood to here, and Leo who can assess things, are amazing. Envying me is unnecessary. I didn’t understand the reason Leo was pouting.
When they walk through the market street, while observing the interesting surroundings, Leo comes along with me. It’s a spectacle I’m used to seeing, but it’s only the second time Leo has come here so it’s amazing, it seems.

「Come to think of it, does Isaac pass by the church?」

「The church? Why?」

At Leo’s abrupt question, I tilt my head.
The only times I go to the church are for the holy night festival and important ceremonial occasions. Why would I of weak faith associate with the church, I wonder.

「At the church, for the sake of explaining the scripture, they are also teaching commoners to read and write. Isaac can read characters so I thought that was the case…… am I wrong?」

「Heeh, at the church, they’re doing those things, huh.」

Knowing such things that are out of my life circumstances, Leo is well-informed. The church standing in for a school, this is the first time I knew of it. If I knew…… no, if the teaching materials are strict scriptures, even if I knew, I won’t go. I will absolutely go to sleep.

「Then, in what way……」

「It’s because my workplace is good.」

「Ahh, I see. That’s extremely kind.」

With how I only say that, Leo understands. As for Ojou’s direct instruction, if I reveal it, Ojou will be troubled. Wanting to become able to read and write while working, because it’s my selfishness, if it seems to be a bother, during the holiday I should go to the church.

「Oh, is that little Zack? Just the person I wanted to meet.」

「Gardener Gramps.」 [T/N: Literally “Grandpa who is a gardener” in a more casual way, so ehhhhh.]

When I avoid the wagon, the wagon stops and an older man who I know appears.

「Because the things you specifically asked for were in stock, I brought them.」

「Seriously!?」

When I approach the back of the wagon, the older gardener who descended from the driver’s seat takes out a small bag. I accept that, smile with my happiness I got, and give my thanks.

「Thank you. I’ll bring the money afterwards!」

「Even though you say that, little Zach is honest, similar to his father.」

「That’s something I want to do.」

After I became a gardening apprentice, there isn’t a lot, but certainly I’m receiving shares of work from my father. Because I’ve reached the point I can make my own money, for things that I want, I should use my own money. Even in my past life, in order to play around, my pocket money wasn’t enough, so after I entered high school I got a part time job. Well, with my past life, it’s different from my garden, in that it didn’t have any use.

「Is that a seed?」

Leo who is still holding my hand, looks towards my hand and asks.

「Maybe, because it isn’t lively.」

「?」

At my mumbling that isn’t answering, Leo tilts his head in confusion. For me who is seen holding the bag of seeds in my hand, I didn’t notice Leo in my surroundings.
Suddenly, when Leo moved his eyes to the middle of the wagon, he saw the unusual flowers for the season.

「A big leaf hydrangea……」

「Ah, that’s right. Gramps, are these the usual?」

Reacting to the name of the flower, when Leo and I look in its direction, at the time when summer is ending, there are bowls of blooming bitter orange hydrangeas. When I listen, the older gardener makes a difficult facial expression and scratches his cheek.

「Ahh, it hasn’t gone smoothly yet」

「With the exception of the rainy season, although only reaching the point of blooming is amazing……」

「As for ordering it, it’s to make it smaller and bloom all year round.」

「No, all year round is unreasonable.」

Saying something absurd about plants, huh. For things like magic, it seems magical power has an effect, but generally for the raising and blooming of flowers, the time is restricted.

「So, to bloom for each season you’d have to make at least four varieties, rather you can’t make the special characteristics of hydrangea during seasons of other flowers, I think.」

「As one would expect, Gramps. You’re smart.」

Was it in that hand? Which way is easy, I don’t understand, but if the old man, before long he can do what he mentioned. From here, he’ll enjoy completing it.
Leo, who was looking at the bowl of the big leaf hydrangea during the time I am talking with the old man, asks him.

「Sir, those hydrangeas, are they goods for sale?」 [T/N: Leo actually uses the word for “master”/”husband” here]

「Hm? No, they’re a trial product I am only bringing in to see for a progress report.」

His return was to show the trial product to the Medicine Magic Ministry of the herbification order he accepted, it seems.
Leo turned his honey colored eyes straight to the old man.

「Sir, will you please sell me this hydrangea? I’ll pay the asking price.」

The old man becomes puzzled as Leo’s unchildlike manner of speaking. But, from when he starts to leave, he concludes he is from a, to some extent, wealthy house. I’m glad we changed his clothes before, if it was after, it would be more suspicious.

「Sonny, this is under development, so there isn’t a reason to sell it, you know.」

「I want to put it in my room. I’ll be sure not to tell anyone in my house. So, I ask.」

Leo is greatly pleased with the out of season hydrangea, isn’t he, as he bows his head and requests. With that result, Mattheus again becomes flustered with his face turning pale.
The old man, who thought a wealthy seeming person bowing their head didn’t exist, is surprised. But, the old man is a pro, and because it is not at the stage of selling, he shows his disapproval of selling it.

「But……」

「Gramps, because I’ll teach him how to grow it, please sell it to him」

「Isaac……」

Leo opens his eyes wide at me helping a friend in need. He doesn’t understand the reason, there is a reason Leo is thinking of that hydrangea. Because saying that seemed to defend him, if it’s Leo, he won’t let it die and will raise it up as something important.

「If Little Zack is saying it, it’s fine」

「Thank you, sir.」

「Thanks, Gramps.」

When we gratefully accept it, the old man lightly pats our heads with both of his hands.

「Well, properly raise it well.」

We firmly nod our heads at the old man’s seeming amused smile. As for our negotiation of receiving it, Mattheus did it.

「Although Isaac is immature, he’s reliable.」

While waiting for Mattheus’ negotiations, a happy seeming Leo says that. I’m being praised, but it isn’t the way of speaking from someone of a similar age.

「Your way of speaking is old, you know……」

Because of that way of speaking, I’m not happy. Afterwards, I don’t want the dazzle from that smiling face to turn towards me.
Leo, who seemed to be somewhat shocked at my words saying he sounded old, as a young looking guy, started to groan. Besides, if you worry about it at this point in time, for age-appropriate ways of speaking, it’s better to give up, I think.
The purchasing procedure ends, and once again I face towards my house. When we arrive the downtown district’s border, the amount of people decreased. During the time the sun is out, people who come out are laborers, but generally it’s only housewives, children, and the elderly.
Given that only women and children aren’t secure, soldiers go around once a day, but more of less the local government is left to several men. Well, as for what the local government is doing, they are getting an understanding of the schedule of downtown workers in order to give the guys something like a holiday and are coordinating requests. Somehow Leo, with how he finds this talk interesting, is listening now. He’s a strange guy who finds this stuff fun.
In the middle of the white mortar houses lined up, I open the door on the side of a pot with a silver plum blossom.

「I’m home. Mom, I brought someone.」

「Isaac, welcome home.」

「Please excuse my disturbance.」

「Excuse me.」

「Welcome. We don’t have anything to entertain you, but please make yourself at home.」

At Leo and Mattheus who enter after me, receives them with a warm smile. While making a bewildered facial expression, Leo makes his greetings, and Mattheus lightly bows as an apology.

「You can’t bring your noble friends to a this place, you know. I thought you brought along a young lady.」

「I don’t have a reason to bring a girl, I think, because if she’s cute, it’s dangerous. And, this isn’t my friend.」

「Oh?」

At my denial, mother smiles. I call out to Leo who was unable to think of what was a good response, and guided him to my room on the second floor. I point at the change of clothes I prepared in advance on top of the bed.

「Wear those. Don’t complain if you feel bad wearing them, you know.」

「I understand.」

「Then, since I’ll be waiting outside the door, if there’s something, call me.」

I say that, and then close the door to my room. I fold my arms behind my head and then lean on the wall, waiting. I think it isn’t that he doesn’t know how to put them on, but just in case. However, I’m glad he didn’t say something like that he can’t change clothes alone.

「Hey, Isaac.」

「What is it?」

I return a response through the door. He’s complaining about the size that doesn’t fit him, I think, as expected it’s too small.

「Aren’t you too kind?」

「Ha?」

「After all, as for introducing ourselves, even though Isaac doesn’t know my definite name, Isaac gave me his full name. On top of that, he looks after me, who isn’t his friend, aren’t you insecure about bringing me to your house?」

What is this guy saying?

「At that point in time when I heard you, you aren’t a bad guy, I thought. First, I had to clearly give my identity, Mattheus would have opposed going.」

Especially with his social status to some extent, because it’s natural to identify the other party, something like using a fake name isn’t as easy as using my full name. Besides, if you know a noble’s name and understand their position, when you give them flattery you’ll be doubted and there’s trouble. Afterwards, even if I was taught, I don’t have the mood to memorize a long seeming name from the beginning.

「The main point is, the other day, with how you were standing, you were decreasing the space on the street and being a hindrance.」

「A hindrance……」

Because people were surrounding the sparkling noble who was in the middle of the marketplace street, there was congestion. Is there something wrong with reducing that? Because of the crowd of people, I didn’t want things I bought to get crushed. It isn’t selflessness, it’s only calculating profit and loss.

「Hahaha, I see, a hindrance……」

Leo’s truly amused laughter comes through the door. It didn’t finish, that laughter, while he apologizes. The other day I thought about it, but Leo’s sense of humor is strange.

「You really are a strange guy.」

「You’re a guy who doesn’t restrain his opinions, truly you are a valuable person. I’m thankful we met.」

Leo finished changing his clothes, opened the door and came out. It weighed on my mind how I didn’t understand the meaning of what he said to me, but apart from that with how it weighed on my mind I was unconsciously silent.
At my silence, Leo tilts his head in confusion.

「What is it? Is there somewhere you think is strange?」

「……hold on, I was thinking about a disparate society.」

I understood the meaning of the words said by my sister in my previous life.
It’s a simple question, but, when I asked about how the chests of the protagonists in the otome games my sister played had a high ratio of moderateness, I was excessively told about the disparity in society like I had angered the Emperor. I didn’t understand half of what was said, but in short if the protagonist’s chest is too big, player sympathy seems to go down.
Up until now I didn’t pay much attention to appearance, if we went out in similar clothing, I thought I’d experience it personally. If an ikemen wears only a white T-shirt and jeans, there’s this sort of phenomenon that they’re smartly dressed, isn’t there? I didn’t think I want to become an ikemen, but I felt helpless.

「Isaac also has an interest in politics?」

「No, not at all.」

Although Leo understood it verbatim, without an explanation I perfectly denied it. Or perhaps I should say, are there kids who have an interest in politics? Especially in Japan, I’m still not the age to start learning about society.
When we returned from the second floor, while drinking tea from the table, Mattheus was waiting. While stirring a pot in the kitchen, mother looks over her shoulder.

「Just the right time. Zack, please put out the tableware.」

「Got it. Leo, sit there.」

Leo sits facing Mattheus, then from the deep shelves I take them out and go to my mother. Mother puts the stew in the middle of the bowl and gives it to me, then I take the scooped stew to the table. At the end, places a salad in the center of the table, and I finally put a piece of bread for each seat.
Leo looks at everything of the meal placed before him, and curiously asks.

「This is……」

「Lunch.」

「I understand that, but……」

「You called me before noon, but if I don’t eat lunch, I will die.」

Eat without delay, I say, and here you are, my mother encouraged. With concern about Leo, I give my thanks for my meal, and start to eat. Mattheus tilts his head in confusion at my expression of gratitude while giving his prayer before meals, and then picks up his spoon. Leo, who was watching the situation, says his prayer before meals and cautiously takes a mouthful of stew.

「……it’s delicious.」

「I’m glad it suits your tastes.」

At Leo’s mumbling, mother seems to happily smile. I’m thinking it’s delicious, but I am devote solely to eating. If I finish, I’ll talk.

「Will Isaac’s mother eat?」

「After my husband eats, I’ll be fine.」

So, eat without minding her, mother encourages. The four chairs at the dining table, because when father is called to patrol the municipality, so now when she returns, she eats alone. Because she doesn’t know when father returns, she keeps warming the stew, and it seems she intended to eat with my father from the beginning.
Relieved by my mother’s words, Leo ate. At first, he eats elegantly as soup, so on the way to his mouth, I point out he should open his mouth and eat the ingredients ont he way. I don’t know how they do it in Leo’s house, but in my house stew has large ingredients. I like how filling it is.
I finish lunch, and while I help wash dishes, Leo waits while drinking tea.

「Leo, can you get the door?」 [T/N: Raw is literally “get out” but this flows better later.]

「Eh, me!?」

「It’s because right now, I can’t leave in the middle of work.」

Quickly, I request it of Leo who is sitting close to the door. Leo is bewildered though he goes to the front door, and opens the door.

「Yes.」

「From my aunt, mother’s share of the pie……」

「I’m sorry, I’m not Zack’s mother. It’s a good smell, and I’ll accept it on his behalf. For a young lady, even if she’s small, doing errands is great, isn’t it.」

Washing the dishes, I can hear Leo’s voice with a smiling face that’s good at talking with others. With that voice, the pie, is it Maria’s? But, why did her voice get interrupted in the middle?
I finish washing out the tableware, and only after entrusting wiping it dry to my mother, I also go to the front door.

「Leo, can you take it back in? Maria’s aunt’s pie is delicious.」

「Is that fine?」

「It’s always a larger portion, so it’s fine.」

When he asks me while accepting the basket the pie was put into, Leo gave his thanks and replied. When I look in the direction of Maria, she had become frozen up with her face completely red like a boiled lobster with her mouth hanging open. First of all, I wave my hand in front of her eyes.

「Ooooi, Maria?」

She notices when I wave my hand for a moment, and I come into focus. That moment, I pull him  back towards myself, protecting Leo.

「Zack, w, who is this!?」

「Leo.」

While hiding behind me, Leo peeks out a little to look at Maria. Because I was asked, I honestly answer.
Leo is a little surprised at Maria’s state while smiling during his greeting.

「Maria, is it? It’s a beautiful name. I’m pleased to meet you.」

Ah, this situation, Leo’s sparkling is a direct, painful hit to the eyes. Maria, I’ll become your shield.
For the Maria in question, looking at Leo with a bright red face, having a blank facial expression. I see, she’s a girl if she becomes like this, huh?

「……you, in some sense you’re a weapon.」

「This is only how I normally am.」

Leo, who seems to be understanding his own appearance, bitterly smiles at my words. As for being beautiful, there’s troubles that come along with it, aren’t there. Well, if you invalidate the other party, you can’t say anything. After this, I was thinking of inviting the others kids to play, although it should be fine, I think.
Troubled as how I can’t move due to being a shield, this time I ask Leo to take the received basket to my mother. Several beats later, Maria notices something, and gave Leo and I several looks. When we tilt our heads in confusion, Maria who stops her gaze in my direction hurriedly opens her mouth.

「Zack, you’re wrong, okay!?」

「About what?」

「Um, well…… um.」

Gripping my clothes tightly with both hands, Maria clearly speaks. In the end, he was perfectly hidden behind me.
Because for when he returns, I won’t know, so first of all, I pat her behind her head to calm her down.

「Leo, afterwards, which do you want to do, play with the kids or explore downtown?」

When I ask while comforting Maria, only after Leo worries me a little, he responded.

「Generally patrolling isn’t as good, so it seems like we should play.」

「If that’s the case. Maria, is it fine to play with Leo?」

When I invite with that, Maria at least raised her head and nodded. When I asked in order to invite the other kids, Maria nodded moment by moment and left.

「What was that……?」

「I lost to Isaac, is what it is.」

To me who was tilting my head in confusion at Maria’s state, Leo said it was amazing, truly laughing, amused. Even though it isn’t about winning or losing, it became something about winning or losing. I think there isn’t a factor where I can win over Leo. Practically, afterwards, in the pretend knight swordplay, it was Leo’s complete victory.
Leo is taking lessons in fencing, isn’t he, there wasn’t any wasteful movements. Johann got angry at this seemingly real knight, Mary, and Paul having fun. When he won, to Mary who was acting as the princess and referee, because Leo pretended to kiss her on the back of the hand, again Mary became as red as a boiled lobster, and seeing that, Johann recklessly challenged Leo to a match.
After that, we played hide and seek, but because only Leo is unfamiliar with the lay of the land, he linked up with me to hide.

「I’m telling you, I’ll find you.」

「Try to find me.」

Towards the ogre-like Johann’s declaration of war while pointing at Leo, Leo calmly returned a smile. Leo is recognizing that calm reply is unnecessarily irritating Johann, I think.
Given that Johann started to count to 100, we spread out, searching for a place to hide. Once we arrive at a place we can’t see Johann, Leo and I stop.

「Now then, where should we hide?」

「We’re two people, so places we can hide are small, you know.」

Are there any good hiding places, the two of us look at our surroundings. From where the water fountain is, because the limit is around a hundred meters in radius, it’s mostly the residential area. There are only white mortar buildings lined up, even if there are shaded areas, objects you can hide with are little. Because the townspeople are respectively cleaning their own home surroundings, it’s superfluous.

「Why don’t we track down and tail Johann, and go where he searched?」

「You, why are you so serious……」

I should probably praise his smarts, but I ended up thinking that he should go easy on someone younger than him.

「He’s seriously coming, so we should also seriously not encounter him. However, having to change tactics for the terrain in this game of hide and seek is interesting.」

Leo’s own style is earnestly facing Johann. Then, with those honey colored eyes sparkling, he’s enjoying this game of hide and seek. Well, it isn’t as boring, so it’s good, right?
In either case, until Johann finished counting, when we look around for a place we should hide, Leo’s facial expression stiffened. When I look towards the point Leo’s gaze stopped, there are three patrolling guards. For the time being, they’re coming in our direction.
Making sure, I control my voice and ask Leo.

「Do you know them?」

「……one of them. The other two, it’s possible they know my face.」

Because the hair color and clothes are different, with a first impression, the potential to not be recognized is there. However, since there is someone familiar with him, not thinking optimistically is better. I look at my surroundings once more, but in the thin gap between two buildings, with the shadows that are able to be there, there is nothing that Leo can hide alone with.

「Leo, this way.」

I press Leo to go into the darkening gap where children are passing by the houses. Leo crouches down, and I get down on my knees, and put both hands on the wall. Having done that, my arms fit Leo between them.

「Until they pass, don’t let out a voice.」

After I say that, I use my unique shadow magic. The shade is only a little, however because there are darkness spirits, they help me stretch the membrane of shadows where we’re hiding. Because it isn’t the case that the shadow membrane reduces visibility to zero, it only extinguishes the hint of being recognized very lightly. If a person touches it, or if someone makes a sound, the membrane will break.
Leo, guessed with the signs of magic, and lightly nodded his head. We motionlessly look at the direction of the road.

「Hey commander, did you eat any of that delicious food?」

「I went as a bodyguard. There’s no way I was able to go eating and drinking.」

「Ehh, is that so? Although the feast in front of my eyes was torture……」

「If it’s a royal party, certainly there was good alcohol, I think.」

「You all…… right now, we’re in the middle of patrolling. Focus more.」

「But, this area is peaceful, isn’t it?」

「Besides, today, is a day where there are guys with fierce looks, right? That kind of day is a bad day to be doing bad stuff.」

A fierce look, that’s my dad, I think. It’s just that he is tall, but he doesn’t make that kind of grim look, I think. But, because he’s untalkative, by accident there’s a feeling his mimetic muscles are lacking. But, there are also times he smiles.
During the time the soldiers pass by us, Leo’s body stiffened. His nervousness is circulating to me, and unconsciously I tightly closed my mouth.
After I confirm the sound of the soldier’s footsteps is completely gone, I undo the magic. The two of us let out a sigh of Fuhaa. If we realize it, the two of us not only our voices but our breaths seemed like they stopped.

「Haa, it seems like they’ve gone.」

「I’m sorry. Thanks for saving me.」

When I mumble while looking in the direction the soldiers went, Leo apologized. When I’m drawn by that voice and turn, near me, Leo had a uselessly well-ordered face. Noticing his slightly unsatisfied stance, I quickly stand up. Because I have only used shadow magic on myself, I thought it would be quick to cover myself up.

「Isaac is a shadow magic user, huh?」

「No, water.」

「But, just now…..」

At my answer, Leo makes a puzzled facial expression.

「It’s outside of my element, but it isn’t zero. Because your magic power is high, you can do much more various kinds of magic, right?」

「Is that so…… yes, it seems I can. Next time, I should try it.」

Understanding, Leo judged that he could do my magic. I can only make a thin shadow membrane, but if it’s Leo, I think he can do a perfect presence concealment magic.

「When Isaac is there, there are many things to learn.」

Seeming a little happy, Leo says some sincere words.

「What are you saying? Just now we’re playing around.」

「It is, isn’t it.」

When I immediately tell him to stop connecting things like studying, Leo smiled, seeming especially happy.
As for the result of the hide and seek game, Leo was able to hide, Johann got mad and burst into tears, and then I came out and comforted him. Because Johann was clinging to me, taking out his anger, I was hit, and for some reason I thought it hurt. Johann’s punches when he’s emotional are fairly painful. [T/N: Isaac is too used to Ojou’s punches.]
Given that if we’re playing, it became close to the evening, after sending the kids back, I went back with Leo who changed into his original clothes, up to the center plaza.

「Until next time, Isaac.」

His appearance of holding onto a paper bag with the pie in it as a souvenir certainly looked age appropriate.

「Next time, there’ll be an itemized list.」 [T/N: Sentence is very barebones, so I assume Isaac is joking about charging Leo for each thing he does.]

I wait until Leo and Mattheus can’t be seen, and then turn on my heel.

「Now then, I should go pay gramps for the seeds.」

If I go now, I should still make it in time.

Not a lot to say for this chapter, but man it was long.

Hopefully ya’ll have a good Thanksgiving, as the next update should come after it.

13. Waltz

TL: Toasty
ED: Toasty

In the early afternoon that had nicely cleared up, one by one, towards the royal palace, luxurious carriages were entering. Among them, a black with gold trimmed carriage was there.
In the window, blue velvet curtains are hung, and the person in the middle can’t be seen. Among the many nobles who put up their family crest by the door of the carriage, the moderately sized golden family crest is engraved below the rear roof. On the four corners of the roof, were images of elemental spirits who protected a person of that family. The family crest was not emphasized, although you could be aware that this was a house of high class.
That carriage, in today’s meeting place, continued to go until it stopped in front of the red carpet. Naturally, the nobles’ gazes gathered on those already descending from the carriage.
When the coachman opened the door, there, where the surrounding gazes gathered, a young man with gently flowing blonde hair appeared. The hair of the bright blue who was just called shimmered, and his prepared appearance shone. The childish ladies blush, and the small yellow one raises her voice.
The young man who did not mind his surroundings at all, lent a hand with a sweet smile.

「May I have your hand, princess?」

「Father…… isn’t making that remark at the place where the princess bears the throne, disrespectful……?」

The boy who had it pointed out to him corrects the situation without looking shy.

「Oh, that is the case, isn’t it. Then, my angel, what should I call you?」

「Mou, Father.」

At the young man who was joking around, he smiled back as if something was slightly funny, and took the small hand of the girl who was apparently his daughter.

Her platinum blonde hair is gently coiled until her waist, twice braided, and at the back of her head, it is collected into a bun. The jasper that decorated their chests weren’t as sparkling as her Nigella flower-like eyes that were thought to be like her father’s. The undertone of her dress’ blue, on the whole, is lighter than her father’s, but the lace accents used in places was the same darkness. On the skirt’s rim, the blue lace on the inside contrasts with the white lace, so the white lace is more visible.
With his eyes feeling a sense of childishness with bravery, he smiled, and some of the boys forgot their words.
For the father and daughter who made a lovely picture, their surroundings naturally made way for them.

「Lydia, I’m sorry. I was supposed to get accustomed to it at Via’s tea parties.」

「Flora was born, so there was no way for it to happen. In addition, there is no need for Father to apologize. That I can have a younger sister, I am happy.」

Escorting his beloved daughter while talking at a volume only they could mutually hear, Geordo apologized, but at the same volume, his daughter refused his apology, and with the sensation it was not a lie, he returned a smile.
Originally, the sponsorship comes from the mother, for tea parties his daughter Lydia participates in, but until her official debut into high society, he had been practicing. However, for the time Flora was being born, Octavia had to refrain from things like parties and meetings over tea, and so Lydia’s first tea party became the prince’s birthday party that she was unable to refuse. In the Duke’s house, their position where they rejected nearly all invitations without hindrance had backfired. They were no more than retainers, and could not go against the royal family.
Geordo had severe apprehensions, but his beloved daughter unexpectedly did not have any special nervousness. Rather, she has a wide margin before he worries. Deeply moved by his daughter’s words, on the other hand, he felt a little wonderful.

「You aren’t as nervous as I thought.」

「I am. I am very worried about doing something discourteous to various members of the royal family. But……」

「But?」

「Father is here with me.」

To his daughter who says it is very reassuring, Geordo has an impulse of wanting to hug his daughter tightly. Bearing it by clenching the hand of his daughter, in order to give her peace of mind, he smiles.

「Of course. If you ever want to go home, say so at any time. Even now is fine.」

「Even though we haven’t even given His Highness, the prince, his congratulations, that would be disrespectful.」

「Even if only I tell it to him it will be fine, however…… I don’t want you to meet him.」

To her unfortunately mumbling father, Lydia tilted her head in confusion. The other party he does not want her to meet, specifically the first prince, it seems, why doesn’t he want her to meet him?

「What’s wrong?」

Lydia asked as doubts surfaced.

「……I have only seen him, however, the extent of the rumors I hear is that he is very reputable.」

He is very young while already being wise, with a heart that thinks of the people, as it is, if he grows up he will become a wise king are the foremost of the rumors.

「I heard he has glittering golden hair and eyes, but the contents of his character are good.」

「That’s right. Opposing him is hard……」

Regarding Lydia, whose eyes are shining with her evaluation of the first princess, her father Geordo had a facial expression like he was holding back saying bitter things. If it’s the general rumors, he’s good, but the information from his trusted friends also say that the rumors that appear to be true are highly probable. The expectation Lydia heard the rumors wasn’t betrayed, it seems. That was the main cause of Geordo’s anxiety.
Geordo changes to a different subject in order to brush off his anxiety.

「Which reminds me, you’re wearing that something that you weren’t wearing from the time you were trying clothes on on.」

Escorting with his right hand, he points at the blooming flowers in his line of sight. With his white gloved hand, he stops at the Nigella ribbon with the white baby rose that looks like it was imprisoned in the moment it was about to fall apart. During the time of final adjustments to the dress’ ensemble, Geordo, who it was matched against, thinks the accent that wasn’t there at the time is curious. Until now, it was the first time he saw a fresh flower for decoration. He feels a faint divine protection of a water spirit.
At her father’s question, Lydia instantly froze up a little. Because it was really a little change, only Geordo, who was holding hands with her, noticed it.

「……this, this is a charm.」

「It’s lovely. Isaac understands what matches Dia well.」

「!?」

Lydia, with unbelievable thoughts, looks at her father who is expressing a sweet and sugary smile. Even though she hadn’t even said the name, how did he know?

「Isaac is water aligned, isn’t he? ……Magic to freeze the flower is skillful, you know. I also want him to teach me that.」

Without exception, he received a report of the magical aptitude of the workers of the Ernest household. With that, Geordo had a general understanding, and remembered the magical aptitude of the younger gardener apprentice.
However, it’s an interesting way to use water magic. Basically, water magic was used to snatch away the moistness.
Geordo, together with admiring the dainty magic, comparatively wanted to seriously understand the method. He wanted to give his wife a bouquet of flowers with his own magic.
Lydia, whose surprise was clear from her mouth, as she starts to understand, a new question floated to mind.

「Ma, gic……?」

「Oh, I’ve done something unromantic, it seems.」

Having done something regretful towards him, Geordo mumbled to himself. It seems Lydia wasn’t aware it was handmade.
Lydia’s eyes widened while looking at the blooming flowering on her left wrist. Then, gradually something like happiness welled up in her eyes.

「You made a good friend, haven’t you?」

「Yes……」

Seeing Lydia meekly nodding her head, Geordo feels delighted at his daughter’s growth. He’s truly glad that boy came to his house. If it was before he met her, he would not have been able to see such a gentle expression even until now. He couldn’t even wear matching clothes with her, maybe.

「Geordo, as expected, you also came.」

「Zinvarka, are you also with your daughter?」

When they arrived at the assembly hall, he was called by a voice from his friend, and Geordo turned his head to face that way. While escorting a girl wearing a dress colored green like fresh leaves, a fine young man who Geordo was not as short as came along. Confirming that, Lydia pinches the hem of her skirt and makes her prepared greeting.

「Dia, this is Zinvarka, the vice leader of a chivalric order.」

「I am Zinvarka von August. It is a pleasure to meet you, young lady.」

「I am humbly called Lydia von Ernest. My father is very grateful to you.」

At Zinvarka, who put a hand on his chest and gave a bow, Lydia, with both hands slightly elevated her skirt and bowed.

「Rather, because I am having his help, do not worry about it. Ahh, this is my daughter, Tordelise.」

「I am the oldest daughter of Marquis August’s house, humbly called Tordelise.」

With her brown hair that was the same deep brown as her father’s shaking, Tordelise nervous-lookingly became panicked and returned a greeting.

「Your daughter is cute like a young rabbit, isn’t she? Somehow or another, she isn’t so nervous.」

「Y, yes……」

Geordo smiled to give her relief, but Tordelise blushed and her body excessively stiffened. Zinvarka, as if he was amazed, faces his friend with half-closed eyes.

「You, with that face, don’t seduce my daughter……」

「That’s unthinkable. I only seduce my wife.」

「Ahh, yes, yes. For now, with your face and position, not getting nervous is impossible.」

During the middle of the fellow fathers’ relaxed conversation, Lydia greets the girl for their first meeting.

「Tordelise-sama, this is the first time I’ve talked to someone close to my face. If it’s fine with you, from here, if we can be on good terms, I would be happy.」

「I, is that so, I’m afraid to be friendly with the beautiful Lydia-sama.」

At the smiling Lydia, Terse shrinks back in fear. While watching over their daughters’ exchange, the fellow fathers look over the state of the assembly hall.

「The gender ratio is half and half, isn’t it?」

「If it’s only the adults, it’s very painful. It’s easy to understand.」

In the assembly hall, boys and girls close to the prince’s age are accompanied by their parents. There are also those with both parents here, but half of them are similar to Geordo where there is only a single parent. Basically, escorting a lady is a man’s duty, so fathers coming together with their daughters are many.

「Only because Flora is there, Via did not come.」

「If Torde had said she wanted to see a glance of the prince, I would not have come.」

While making a sullen face, when Zinvarka looks in the direction of the daughters, there appears to be two people talking about the prince whose eyes are shining. The surrounding girls are also looking with the same level of expectation.

「……As expected, he’s coming.」

「Marquis Victor? That house’s timing is bad……. he arrived after, it seems.」

「Perhaps.」

At Geordo’s mumbling with a pensive facial expression, Zinvarka understood the moment he pointed at them, he remembers it’s an acquaintance not in this place.

「Because his wife is going to bed, he’s coming alone, which is regrettable, it seems.」

「It’s because he’s gentle, isn’t he…… If there’s another opportunity, we should visit.」

「We should. Well, if we accidentally came making gloomy facial expressions, it would be disrespectful.」

「That’s right. Making Dia nervous is no good, isn’t it.」

「……Really, your family is your basis for everything, huh?」

At the idea of discontinuing a gloomy topic, when Geordo approves with a smile, Zinvarka replies with an amazed voice. As a subordinate who arrived, how, until here, does he briskly suspend the priority of the host right now?
Incidentally, when their talk stopped, from where the orchestra had been preparing, wind instruments loudly sounded. Everyone in the assembly hall, at that signal, became quiet, simultaneously facing the double doors at the top of the wide staircase ahead, bowing their heads.
Slowly both doors opened, and the king, then the first queen, the second queen, and then the second prince appeared.
The king stands in the center, and the other three people stand behind him. The king with a well-projected voice, invites them to lift their heads, and then after confirming everyone followed, states his opening greetings. He says simply his thanks for gathering for the sake of his son and the purpose of enjoying oneself to their heart’s content. Not prolonging his speech, rather, he’s sorry that he appeared before the main actor, and only when the king showed it was a joke, everyone laughed.

「Then, today I wish to show our main event.」

Saying that, when the king steps back to the side of the first queen, ahead of the opened doors, a boy with golden hair and eyes like melted honey appears. The moment he appeared, clapping hands and cheers gushed forward, and at that, he accepted it like it was a gentle breeze while he moved and stopped where the king was standing just some time ago.
The model of a boy who was like an angel that sprung forth from a painting deserved to fascinate others. Even deeply religious people would think he was a true messenger from heaven. His dizzying gold hair and white porcelain skin was the envy of women, but if it’s him, then no one is jealous.
The first prince slowly looked around the assembly hall, and after confirming all present were silent, smiled deeply and opened his mouth.

「I am Roy Leonhard Von Rosenheinz. Now, in everyone’s minds, gathering for my sake, I give my thanks. I am still inexperienced, but I want to work vigorously for the same of the people and help my father. Somehow or another, from here on, for all of my subordinates, the people of this country, I want to help them. Then, the chance to meet with all of the young, like-minded persons after this, is very delightful. Certainly, we should talk about the future of this country.」 [T/N: I had 「Roy Leonhart Von Rozenhein」 but again, matching the manga here for convenience to you guys coming from there.]

While finishing talking, cheers and applause that were more passionate than the ones before sprang out.
While in the middle of the clapping, Geordo mumbles with a volume that can’t be heard.

「Saying he’s smart is unfair, huh.」

「You’re saying that?」

Only Zinvarka who was next to him picked it up, surprised. If other people heard, they would only be able to hear sarcasm, but he was thinking it seriously.

「Mou, I haven’t been told by my daughter I’m the most good-looking, huh……」

「It would be good if you had only been told that.」

While looking at his daughter who was eagerly clapping her hands, when Geordo who was seeming lonely let his feelings show, Zinvarka replies not with encouragement, but his true feelings. Hearing something like that from his daughter, Zinvarka hadn’t had that experience either. Rather, for the aim of what is needed from being a young assistant leader, the beard he was growing to supplement his dignity gave him a bad reputation with women in his house.
With the first prince’s opening declaration, from the orchestra a gentle sound began to flow. The middle of the assembly hall is a suitable temperature that seems to make you forget it is midsummer outside, so spending time with a lot of people is easy. Although the buffet party is sponsored by the royalty, there is a relatively relaxed atmosphere. The first prince himself walking around and saying hello to everyone is the root cause. It isn’t that at the prepared seat of the royalty, he passively receives congratulations, rather to the person who arrived, they turn and give their thanks.
When the greetings of unrelated elder statesmen who do not necessarily have children end, self-serving nobles nearby scramble to give their congratulations, then the children begin to introduce themselves. Geordo looked over how with only a word or two, they properly go one by one, exchanging conversation, and did not feel pleasant at how his daughter was looking at the prince with a respectful look.

「Are you Duke Ernest?」

「Yes. It is an honor to make your acquaintance. Congratulations for this time, your Highness.」

He stopped his eyes, towards Geordo who respectfully gave his thanks.

「Thank you. I hear you are an excellent duke. Furthermore, that standout appearance, there is no one who would mistake it.」

「It’s something excellent. Surely, hearing that sort of thing from his Highness with a dazzling appearance is satisfactory.」

At his smile that he feels as if it was shining, Geordo returns a smile like a sweet-smelling flower. At the situation of two good-looking people lined up next to each other, the surrounding women let out a sweet sigh.

「I too, following my father and other state officials, want to build my strength from early on, and retire early.」

「You give me too much credit, to equal me with His Majesty. Because my father entrusted this territory to me, there isn’t an ending of retirement.」

「That is because the duke’s territory is wide, isn’t it? With the royal capital, if coming and going is frequent, either one of them will become neglected. It’s a wise judgement.」

At the boy who without delay shows consideration for the circumstances he understood, Geordo’s smile doesn’t change, and is surprised in his inner thoughts. Certainly, this is only called a wise king of the future.

「Duke, is this your daughter?」

「Yes. This is my daughter, Lydia.」

「This is the first time we meet. I am humbly called Lydia Von Ernest. For this occasion, absolutely, congratulations.」

Different from other nobles, until asked from the prince, Lydia introduced herself as his daughter. It had been avoided, but this was as far as he could go.
Lydia’s expression was nervous, but her voice was not too excited, and with a tightly controlled voice she gave her congratulations. Geordo felt proud at his daughter of his house who did not feel ashamed to show manners.
After the prince slightly opened his eyes, his facial expression began to smile broadly.

「It’s like a fleeting fairy, I think, you have dignified eyes. Truly, you have a beautiful daughter.」

「That……」

At the blushing Lydia, the prince held out a hand.

「Would you like to dance with me, Lydia-sama?」

「……with pleasure.」

The instant it occured, Lydia couldn’t believe it, but if possible she wanted to reply to the elegantly smiling prince’s invitation.
From those surrounding them, seeing the two young people with envious and other various looks, Geordo, who was ostensibly seeing his daughter off, mumbled with a lower than usual voice.

「Is he really seven years old?」

「You were also someone like that, you know.」

Knowing about his frightening childhood, Zinvarka half-closes his eyes. Because he is now friends with the person he thought that because he couldn’t believe the smiling speeches he coolly said, society doesn’t understand.
Lydia, who is unaware of the father’s exchange, is surprised as the prince’s skillful lead while also synchronizing as if to cut dependence on him.

「You’re skilled, aren’t you? I’m glad I chose you as the first lady to dance with.」

「It’s your… first time? With this, it’s very……」

At the seemingly delightfully smiling prince, Lydia is surprised.

「Truly. It’s because I am only receiving lessons alone.」

「I also have lessons alone.」

「Is that so? For a noble, it’s troubling to have little chance to interact with other young nobles. This time as well, it’s my birthday, so I asked father to prepare an unreasonable occasion.」

「Then, this party is His Highness’ idea?」

「It’s merely selfish, you know. There is a feeling of being used, but it’s in my hypothesis.」

At the prince’s satisfied looking appearance, to some extent Lydia was aware that with an understanding of his vassals, he would proceed. In this way when he tried to talk, he would often feel wise.
However, after his first time dancing, the feeling that his expression broke a little was her imagination, wasn’t it? Up to some time ago, the appearance of not being scared of adults had become weaker, instead there is a feeling of being a little closer to being age appropriate.

「Um…… Your Highness, it’s discourteous, but your words…」

「Fufu, if it’s here, the adults also aren’t able to hear, so it’s fine, right? Lydia-sama also doesn’t have to call me that in that formal way.」

It’s fine to call him by name, says the prince while roguishly smiling. Only personally seeing the boyish side made Lydia confused.

「That’s, that’s something disrespectful……」

「It’s fine because it’s a request from me. No one can blame you.」

She faces that innocent, sparkling smile, and Lydia doesn’t understand what the best thing to do is. Calling him by name in a familiar way is disrespectful, but command from royalty is something she can’t go against.
During the time she is worried about which way is right, she continues to look at the smile with an expecting gaze.

「……I understand, Roy-sama.」

When Lydia, who was at point-blank range in front of him, runs out of persistence and accepts, Prince Roy’s smiling face sparkles even more.

「I’m happy. As expected, you were the right noble lady to choose.」

At the boy’s pretty look with his whole face smiling while saying that sort of thing, Lydia’s cheeks became rose-colored. Girls of similar age shouldn’t blush with an admiring look, that way of acting is a terrible story.

「Why did you ask me?」

Based on her family status, she was ready to be invited to dance once, but she didn’t think that she would be invited first by Roy. Lydia doubted it was natural.

「It’s because you talked to me properly.」

「Yes……?」

「I talked to some others’ children, but they were either too nervous or too admiring that I couldn’t have a conversation, you know……」

At Roy’s words that had a regrettable-seeming smile to them, Lydia understands. She understands well the feeling of the other party not being able to talk with you. Except of those around her age, her position is above the other person, so meeting face to face and talking is difficult, isn’t it. If she had not been able to practice sufficiently, because she was anxious, her nervousness would swell up.
Even the time she dances, openly entering her vision, at the decorating flower charm on her left-hand side, she lets a smile slip. In no small part, it is thanks to this.

「I was starting to think that so suddenly is impossible…… then, Lydia-sama, I was able to meet you.」

The honey-colored eyes look into eyes like Nigella flowers.

「It’s thanks to a noble lady like you that I can’t give up. Thank you for giving me hope.」

「That, I have not done anything……」

Even if she hung her head at the undeserved thanks, the white flowers are reflected. It does not mean she herself knows the preciousness that there is a companion you can talk with. Here, humbling herself again,  a gap will grow, and he’ll become disappointed.
Lydia raises her head and smiles.

「If I, for sure, am able to talk with Roy-sama, I would be happy.」

It isn’t from the viewpoint of a vassal, it is with the viewpoint of someone in the same generation, she tries to honestly convey. There, Roy’s bright smile was shown.
Until the waltz ended, the chatted only with each other with a volume that could not be heard by others, and when the music stopped, the two were wrapped in applause. The two who weren’t paying attention to the way they were talking, exchanged gazes and softly laughed. Then, with their hands held as they were, gave their thanks to the onlookers.
Roy gives the signal for Lydia to return to Geordo’s escort and returns to the royalty.

「Then, Your Majesty. Until the next time.」

「Ahh, sometime I’ll show you our proud garden.」

When he exchanged greetings, Roy returned the greetings from Zinvarka and the other vassals.
When she thought back on it, it was just a moment ago although at that incident that was hard to believe, Lydia is uplifted. She herself, now, danced with the prince and talked with him.
Lydia, remaining in her dreamy state of mind and loosening her manners, looks up at her father.

「Father, I didn’t do anything discourteous, did I?」

「No? You were a very wonderful lady, you know.」

At receiving her father’s praise with a smile, Lydia smiled with relief and happiness.
In the middle of the carriage returning home, towards that dream-like incident, Lydia was becoming restless.

「His Highness is no less wonderful than the rumors said.」

「Yes, so it seems.」

Geordo smiles while listening to her talk. In the middle of talking like that, after a little while when they arrived at the estate, a voice from the coachman rings out. Because of that, the conversation is broken off, and Geordo abruptly brings up the topic.

「……listen, Dia.」

「Yes.」

「If, by chance, you were to become His Highness’ bride, would you be happy?」

「That is a story like a dream.」

It’s a development that you’d yearn for completely like a picture book you’ve read. Therefore, Lydia immediately gave an affirmative reply.

「I see. Then, I will discuss it for Dia. From today, it seems like His Highness will be searching for bridal candidates.」

「Then, today, His Highness’ birthday party that was celebrated……?」

「Yes. Of course, that is the main point. His Highness may not know, but because some of His Majesty’s vassals also had this aim, he was able to have a party.」

No, Roy knew. Lydia, who talked with Roy, knows that he went to the party with a sense of his vassal’s intentions. Lydia was annoyed at the truth that meant he was not there purely to celebrate.

「Then, Dia will become that bridal candidate.」

Lydia thought strangely about her father who spoke as if it was a decided matter. Even if the party hadn’t finished, the expectation is that there is no official notice. Even so, her father understood grounds for judgement, it seems.

「It seems there are other candidates, however, if Dia desires it, then I will help, you know.」

It seems only a little lonely, however Geordo touches up his beautiful smile.

「When Dia makes up her mind, could you tell me? Especially if it’s disagreeable, because I will refuse them.」

Lydia understands that there is no way he can go against a command from the royalty. In the case it is officially decided, how much her father will upset others is difficult.

「Y, yes……」

That is all Lydia was able to respond with.
Carrying the reality of their talk, she was absolutely surprised. There wasn’t happiness or any other emotions welling up, only pure surprise occupied her heart.

Geordo might be a silly man, but what a good dad. Straight up willing to fight the royal court over his daughter.

Not much to say in this chapter, other than that I did change a few of my name translations to match the manga. Currently I’m translating Chapter 19, so Volume 1 will be done soon.

One thing I did notice was Volume 2 is long per chapter. The reason why Volume 1 has 19 chapters and the others have around 10 is that yes, every chapter in Volume 2 is about the same length as 2 chapters of Volume 1. I have been able to keep my pace of every 3 weeks but I’m hoping I can keep that up when we hit Volume 2. I was tempted to increase the pace of releases to once every 2 weeks, but I have to see how long it takes me to power through a Volume 2 chapter.

This goes doubly because I’m back to being at the office 5 days a week, which means much less time to translate, as before I could easily do it during my downtime at work; not so much here anymore. Though amusingly I’m here, posting this on my day off, heh. But again, we’ll see, as we have a while until we hit Volume 2 and I haven’t actually translated a chapter from there yet to see the time needed.

If you enjoyed the translation, consider dropping a comment or a like! Or, if you’d like to help keep the site funded, the Ko-Fi for the website can be found here.

See you all next time!

TL: Toasty
ED: Toasty

In the land that extends behind the residence, there I was. Because this is a spare place for drying laundry, few people come.

「Your posture has become better, hasn’t it?」

「Is that so?」

Incidentally, when I finished practicing martial arts, my teacher, Heinz-san the butler, who I didn’t realize was there, spoke to me.
I was dripping with sweat, but my teacher as always, with an unreadable facial expression like a calm water’s surface, was refreshing to look at. In the end, even though I received a small adjustment, it’s strange. I wonder how his sweat glands are. No, he could throw me without receiving a single hit.

「Yes. Because it seems you were hunched over, I was thinking you should correct it.」

My teacher says I saved him the trouble. Certainly, for nearly all of my gardening work, because the times I was bent over are many, it seems I’ve become like a hunchback. Because my father’s stature is tall, I do the work that needs you to squat, and the truth is I heard from my mother it’s helping him, and being helpful makes me happy, but that kind of harmful effect is there.

「What are you doing?」

「Um…… ah, I’m sure to stretch before strength training.」

I have an understanding. But, because I can’t say anything, I say that. The increased stretches are a lie.
When I make that lie in front of my teacher, I feel like he can see through my secret, and my heart pounds. At such a time, I think that things like turning your head away aren’t good, and quietly look back into his eyes.

「Is that so? From here, as well, please continue doing that.」

「Yes.」

Somehow I avoid referencing it, and my heart is relieved.
Maybe my posture’s improvement is because of helping Ojou’s self-study. As for what Ojou is doing, it’s only the basics of waltz, she was saying, but I wonder about the other dance varieties that exist. But, the foundational practice, for me, is tough. Because it uses muscles I’ve never used before until now, being conscious of my posture is more tiring than memorizing martial art forms.
First of all, stepping on Ojou’s feet is frightening, and so even how to move your feet, I was desperately learning.
Somehow, I’m unskilled with rhythm, isn’t that right?
According to Ojou, triple time and four-four time are different, it seems. The songs I often sing use four-four time as a basis, so the triple-time of waltz is difficult.
I call out to my teacher who has to leave when practice is over, since there was something I wanted to ask him.

「Um, teacher.」

「……what is it?」

He answers in a single beat. As for the feeling of resignation in his voice, I wonder why that is.

「Something was weighing on my mind before, but are there servants like master who can fight like I’ve heard about?」

「There aren’t many, but the ones hired from knight families can. Since regular guards can deal with it.」

「Heeeeeh.」

「Among them, I have to assign several of them to Lydia-sama……」

Master, who put his chin on his fist while really thinking carefully, somehow after glancing at me, mumbled that sort of thing. From now on, because the chances for Ojou to go outside would increase, an escort would become essential. That is to say, for people like Duke-sama or Oku-sama, there are servants trained in combat.. Before the time we met for tea, I completely didn’t think that kind of person would be in those maids, but perhaps there was. [T/N: Literally ‘servants of armed struggle school’ for ‘trained in combat’, but I opted for something less weird-sounding in English. Also Heinz definitely staffing Isaac with Lydia.]

I heard that Ojou, sama, gu…… people close to her age will increase, right?

「Certainly, there are expectations to choose sons and daughters of close age, but is there something?」

「No, Ojou…… sama, I hope, is able to make friends.」

「You’re carefree, aren’t you……」

Ah, master isn’t hiding his amazement. His facial expression is new. I, did I say something strange, I wonder?
For people like nobles, until around the time they would go into Japan’s compulsory education system, because they have something like a private tutor, I have the impression the chances they have to spend with those of the same generation are small. There are guards, but it could be that she is able to be with the same age as her, it would be good. Which reminds me, in elementary school in my previous life, there were few guys who could use the monkey bars, and if you could do them, when you used them you would be called a monkey, huh. Ah, now, also, when I tried to compensate for my lack of height with a dropkick, because my Master said I was like a monkey, not much has changed.
Click, and my thoughts were derailed by the sound of Master confirming the time with his pocket watch.

「Our time for chatting is up. You should also go back to work.」

「Yes, sorry for keeping you!」

When I reflexively bow as a farewell, master’s eyebrows only slightly furrowed. However, when he immediately returned to a calm facial expression, he turned on his heel and went back to the estate.
After I wiped my sweat off with a towel, I returned to my father’s work and did my chores. On the days that I received instruction from Master, I told Ojou not to come. Because it would be disagreeable for Ojou to smell of sweat, and if you also look, it wouldn’t be funny.
Besides, I don’t want her to see something uncool. Ojou is always getting mad at me and I’m undignified for my age, but if I can do it, I don’t want her to be disgusted.

「Hm……?」

I have a strange feeling, and then turn around. However, there’s nothing. In the middle of the residence, there are maids who are cleaning the windows, though. Recently, when I was working on the estate grounds, I have had a strange feeling. Sometimes I have a feeling of something creeping around the nape of my neck, but with only the servants diligently working when I turn around, there’s no changed appearance.

「I wonder if a spirit is playing a prank on me??」

Because I can’t see them, I have an image of mischievous fairy-like spirits. Because they’re also delighted with my songs, I have a feeling they enjoy anything fun.
I understand that feeling of an unknown cause and returned to work.
After I went with Ojou for her independent study, one month passed by unexpectedly quickly. Until now, Ojou told me when to come, and our practice time was rearranged only so it couldn’t leak out to our surroundings. It’s amazing now, however, Ojou came to me alone, and didn’t search for anyone else. Even so, it’s expected that every time she takes a 「walk」, it will be long. It’s inside the residence grounds, so it’s fine, is that what she was thinking, or is it because Katherine-san is following you, I wonder.
First of all, the day before the party would become our final practice day. I, up until the end, would meet with Ojou with the best effort I could do, even if I didn’t sufficiently understand how to dance. At the end of practice, I worriedly ask.

「Is it okay to practice with me……?」

「Yes. When I was taught by my teacher, because it’s one person, so I understood to be careful when I have an actual partner.」

Given that Ojou really says her satisfaction, I’m relieved.

「Is that so? I’m glad……」

I, who was openly giving a dull smile, am reflected in Ojou’s light blue eyes. As expected, with being unused to dancing, I was nervous.

「Um, Zack……」

Ojou mumbles while opening her mouth. She isn’t calm, maybe, and poking her index fingers together, is bending and straightening them out.

「……um, helping me with practice, I, I was saved, and I…… um, so……」

Ojou, turning her eyes away, after closing her lips, looked at me.

「Thank you.」

Like a bud about to bloom, it’s a little awkward, and Ojou smiled.
If I can see Ojou with this kind of face, I think I’m glad I did my best even if it wasn’t sufficient. I happily grinned.

「Do your best for your performance.」

Together with my encouraging words, and with a prepared paper bag that’s handed over, Ojou receives it and looks at it.

「This is……?」

「Because I can’t go with you, as a substitute, it’s a charm.」

Ojou slightly widens her eyes, and takes out the contents of the paper bag.
What’s taken out from inside is a charm of a white baby rose about to bloom attached to a blue ribbon.

「It’s cheap, so it’s unreasonable to have to wear it.」

In order to make sure, I clarify. It’s the quality of ribbon I can buy with my pocket money, so it’s not something like silk.
The baby rose is one I asked my father if I could pick it from the greenhouse.
Because the charm of the baby rose was more difficult to make than I thought, I made a lot of mistakes. I thought of the name of blizzard, and froze it, and on the third try when I froze the water, the volume had increased but I realized the cells had been destroyed. After that, I rethought the system of drying flowers, and tried to pull out the water portion of the flowers, but there was the problem of osmotic pressure, and with the degree of adjustment being large, with ten tries I preserved the current status and succeeded in only pulling out the water. For things like science, I’m bad at it, although I hadn’t manipulated water on a nano level, I regretted trying to do it. Because I futilly used my nerves, for a while I didn’t want to become a water wizard.
Tomorrow, concerning Ojou, something like a recital is like an examination, so with the intent of something like a prayer for academic success, I wonder if I made too many. From some time ago, staring at her hands as it is, there is no response. More or less, I made a ribbon that would not seem to get in the way. Ah, putting in the paper bag, as expected, was clumsy, huh?

「I’m sorry, I wasn’t thinking if it was more preferable, and put it in the paper bag, but……」

A box for decorations would have been expensive. I looked, more or less, but the main part of the charm wasn’t even as expensive, and it was out of my reach.
Again, there’s nor reaction. She isn’t pleased with it, it seems, but I picked and chose a pretty flower.

「If, by chance, you aren’t pleased with it, you can throw……」

「I will absolutely not throw it away!!」

Before I finish speaking, as if to protect it, Ojou hides the ribbon. She isn’t being threatened with taking it. It’s already Ojou’s, so it won’t be taken. She seems pleased with it, so it is okay to say it’s good?
First of all, to Ojou who’s holding the ribbon, for the sake of appealing to someone like a threatened cat, I openly show both palms and make a gesture of having no hostility. Ojou, who understands it won’t be taken, lowers her guard.
Quietly opening her closed hands, in the middle of her now open hands, she checks the flower.

「It’s pretty…… and cute……」

Ojou begins to show a happy facial expression. Her mumbling is soft, but I was able to hear it. She’s happy with it, I’m glad.

「I’ll do my best tomorrow.」

「Don’t be too nervous. It’s the real prince.」

「How did you keep it alive…… if I look at this, I’ll remember Zack, and if I get discouraged, it will be okay.」

「Ehhh, am I not being spoken badly about?」

The feeling of support was put in, but that sort of sense of that feeling being attached isn’t there.

「In some way, I am praising you.」

In some way. Well, because the charm wasn’t for nothing, it’s acceptable.
Around sunset, the stone gazebo, the surrounding pond, with everything turned orange, we match smiles. We aren’t tense at the end, it seems, but we have a feeling it will be fine.
Certainly, Ojou will be fine. For me, who saw the appearance of Ojou putting in hard work, I believe tomorrow will be a success. I don’t understand noble parties or how to be successful at them, but if it’s Ojou, she’ll succeed in being cool and come back.
Returning home that day, before leaving the estate, the eyes of the maids I saw were red. Is it summer fever? The flowers of the estate we use to decorate have pollen, so it’s to be expected. It weighed on my mind, and then when I consulted with my father, because it seems there are flowers close to the estate that I am unfamiliar with, I’ll investigate them. The next time I practice, I’ll try to ask Master if I can receive his cooperation.

11. Invitation

TL: Toasty
ED: Toasty

「It’s already fine, you know, the prince said it was.」

「……Zack, you’re unskilled at reading. You have to include the emotion.」

Ojou, with her eyes half-closed, even if it’s a soft voice, says Katherine is better.

「Then, Ojou should read it.」

「In that situation, you won’t learn.」

「I understand, but……」

With the guest room where the weak sound of rain reached, two people on the sofa are reading a picture book side-by-side. The kind of day she would come over when it rains had become routine. Katherine, who also knew the circumstances, is there with us, and during break times would make tea.
When I read, given that I follow the letters at all costs, the best I can do is read in a monotone. Usually, such things like a chance to read and write don’t exist, and one of the reasons is I can only practice at a time like this. Because that’s uncool, if I want to secretly self-study, but especially because something like a book is an expensive thing to buy, I buy things like plants or seeds.
Following Ojou’s character identification, I read in a monotone as it is, and somehow or another read to the end.

「Next is this.」

「Eh, shouldn’t we read it again?」

When I think about how my mouth is a little tired, Kaherine puts a cup of tea she quietly made on the table. At her exquisite timing, I’m amazed. Maids are amazing. Ojou also can’t refuse Katherine’s tea. Thanks to her, I was able to catch a small break.
While taking a breather with warm tea, I ask a question that I thought about.

「Ojou, you have a lot of books where princes appear, don’t you.」

「Isn’t it lovely when they break a girl’s curse or defeat an evil dragon?」

At Ojou, who is absorbed in romance, I thought that it’s better to get a magician to break a curse, and a knight to fight a monster, but I stayed silent. For girls, the truth is they like princes.

「Why is it only blonde hair?」

Is blonde hair her preference? Which reminds me, according my sister in the past world, for princes and princesses, blonde hair and blue eyes were said to be signs of kingship.

「That is the symbol of royalty.」

「So you’re saying royal people have blonde hair?」

「Yes. Blonde hair that shimmers like gold is called proof of being a pure-blooded noble. The closer the eyes are also to gold, the stronger the royal blood.」

「Heeeh, then Duke-sama?」

「My father’s grandmother, in those days, was a princess, it seems.」

It seems she’s proud of her house’s lineage, and as for Duke-sama’s talking when it comes to Ojou, he acts proud, lifts his chest, and answers. However, it’s no wonder Duke-sama is sparkling.
I understand that picture book that was drawn in this country, because it models the royalty, generally they have blonde hair. Certainly in other countries, it’s different.

「Fuuuuu. The appearance of royalty is showy, isn’t it? For me, I like Ojou’s pale-blonde hair that is kind on the eyes.

It’s only a picture book, but I complain while I look at the prince drawn with a halo. I’m glad I haven’t met a person like that. Something further than Duke-sama’s dazzling blonde hair is too painful.

「Then, next time, if I read this, it’ll be good, right? Ojou?」

I curiously think about how a voice isn’t returned, and when I look next to me, clasping her hair with both hands, Ojou was concealing her reddened face with her hair. It seems I did something annoying. Isn’t she ruining her carefully prepared hair?

「What’s wrong?」

When I ask, silently I am glared at. It seems I said something that hurt her feelings. Or, although it’s for the sake of practice, reading a picture book in a monotone is not funny?

「I’m sorry? Next time, I’ll read it more in your kind of speech」

「…….if Zach reads in a monotone for his whole life, it will be good.」

「What’s with that curse?」

She suddenly mumbles an outrageous curse. It may be due to Ojou’s curse, but for two more volumes, I read from beginning to end in a monotone.
Several days after that exchange, I was pulling out weeds as always. For the summer that the greenery that is energetically bathing in the sun is spreading, I can’t count the amount of weeds I’ve pulled out. If the summer sun moved, it would be good, but if that’s the case because trees other than the essential flowers and weeds would sprout first, this much is fine, it seems. If there would be supplemental personnel, when the gardener guild requests temporary employees, the Ernest house, at that time, would need to have increased security. That would be trouble for my untalkative father and myself.

If the amount of students increased, it would be good, but.

I thought about the times when there is a lot of work. Frankly speaking, the Baumgartner house doesn’t have hereditary succession. Because of our gardening skill and devotion to the Ernest house, it’s good if we inherit it, blood is unrelated. Downtown there are many guys who aim to do the work their parents are doing, so it only looks to be hereditary. Because my parents never said I had to succeed them, there are other families in the neighborhood who would like to take over.
When we go to the Gardener Guild, I often see organizations that are no longer working for just a house, but as a school name for the first house. In the event, the way my house has something that is hereditary-ish is strange.
As for the Baumgarneter house, in the royal capital neighborhood, it is rumored to be the most difficult gardener. I was thinking that the royal capital was the most difficult, but since there are people there proportional to the size, it seems they are dealing with it by preparing passing marks and strengthening their guard. So strict, isn’t it, that I don’t understand. The lower social classes doing chores is ordinary for this era, it seems. First of all, publically, there are no other apprentices because it is so harsh.

For the older guys, it seems they won’t help, huh?

The older guys who hadn’t reached fifty are actively on duty. But, given that those exclusive to the Ernest house succeeded and retired after his father, certainly you can declare it isn’t a factor. Right now, at the same time my grandmother travels to the spacious Arventrot country, she buy unusual plants. Given that they return and always give souvenirs of plants that aren’t natively growing in this area, I look forward to every time they come back.
Maa, because it can’t be helped worrying about things I don’t have, I hum while continuing my work.
In my past life, I had a karaoke music player, but because now I don’t have that sort of thing, I  get into a mood to sing. I can understand the feeling of farmers singing while working from a movie about the Sengoku era. This is fun.

「……what is that song?」

「Ojou.」

When I stop singing and turn my head back, Ojou, who has a parasol, bends her head slightly, with her eyes as if she was looking at a curious sight.

「With commoners, are such rough, or perhaps I should say, lively songs popular?」

At a melody she hasn’t heard before, Ojou is something like bewildered. Certainly things like classical music or opera, she listens to, it seems.

「First of all, it’s something like a battlefield song.」

「Is it a commoner’s war song??」

「No, because I have not seen it, I don’t know very well, I should sing rather than fight, right? Or so I’ve heard.」

「Is it opera?」

「Hmm? I was only singing what my younger sister taught me.」

Although it’s an anime my sister in my previous life hasn’t seen, because she loved only the melody, she often sang it for karaoke practice. It’s useless for me to sing the man’s part, but the end result is one where I sing everything. Although, also with the woman’s part, the duet is said to be a factor, but I don’t understand the meaning. Maa, certainly general artists and I also liked it.

「Zack is an only child, isn’t he……?」

With Ojou’s puzzled look, I realized I made a slip of the tongue.

「Something like a younger sister.」

That’s it. I don’t have a blood relationship with them anymore.

「Fuuu, so there is a girl like that……」

Ojou tightly grasps her parasol’s handle, lips looking displeased. Is there something to be pouting over?

「Ojou is cute.」

First of all, I’d like to keep talking about the reality that I compared it with my sister of my past life. If that person saw Ojou, I think they’d be delighted.  It’s easy to imagine a scene where they charge towards a beautiful girl while saying abusive language. Because Ojou would be troubled, I’m glad I don’t have her now.

「Eh, me in particular……!? Or perhaps I should say, although Zack doesn’t understand, stop saying that kind of thing without hesitation!!」

Always, always, Ojou’s face turns red as she scolds me, but concerning whatever she is scolding me for, I completely don’t understand. I don’t understand, but it seems I’ve done something bad to Ojou.

「Sorry?」

While also tilting my head to the side, first of all I apologize. Ojou mumbled 「Good grief」 while somehow burying the hatchet.

「At any rate…… really, the spirits are delighted.」

「Ah, Ojou saw them?」

For the time she told a story before about how the spirits were delighted with music, Ojou was dubious, however she understood after having practically seen it, it seems. To me with little magical power, I only got a sensation of something like an enjoyable atmosphere.

「Even if I offer music, I am thinking it should be more sacred……」

Ojou, who seems to be imagining something like ancient Shinto music and dancing or hymns, looks at me, who was singing an upbeat song, with a curious look.

「It’s fine, you know, I like this one.」

To me, who is claiming how much I like this song, Ojou lets out a sigh. She doesn’t want to understand, but because I’m demonstrating it, it seems she can’t help but recognize it.

「What happened today?」

While going back to pulling weeds, I listen to the reports of which things happened today.  Ojou, who always immediately starts talking, somehow is silent.
For a while, even if I wait, there isn’t a reply. Because the sunlight is strong, maybe she’s become sick, I wonder. I become worried, and then pause in my work and look over my shoulder.

「Ojou?」

She isn’t falling over, but she’s making a somewhat difficult facial expression and looking down. Because she’s sinking into silence like she’s enduring something, it’s something difficult to talk about, isn’t it?
It can’t be helped, and I stop my work, and put my work gloves in my pocket. I go where Ojou is, fall to one knee, and meet Ojou’s downward gaze.

「What’s wrong?」

When I ask, Ojou’s eyebrows rise up. Although she’s gripping the handle of the parasol strongly with both hands, I realize it, and gently peel away the outer hand and hold it as if I’m not putting any strength into it.

「Huh?」

When I wanted her to have a little peace of mind and smile, her completely silent lips opened.

「Mo……」

「Yes?」

「My mother, she gave me an invitation…」

「Yes.」

I reply back so Ojou, who gradually begins talking, knows I am paying attention. It’s different from when she was completely stiff just a bit ago, her anxious-looking facial expression already isn’t hidden.

「One month from now, there is a party to celebrate the prince’s birth……」

This time, to match the age of the princess, the party will seem to go on from just past noon to the evening. Therefore, they are calling Ojou as she is a girl of similar age.

「Aren’t you glad to be invited to the prince’s birthday party? You can see the lovable living prince.」

「That isn’t so much what it is……!」

When I purposely say something carefree, immediately a contradictory voice returns.

「I, it will be the first time I am in the presence of other people, you know……!? That, something like the prince of His Highness’ birthday party…… I can’t dance adequately……」

「It’ll be fine.」

「Why can you say it will be fine!?」

At my words, Ojou gets mad. But, those eyes full of anxiety look like they could cry at any moment.

「After all, Ojou is always beautiful.」

「!?」

Because I’m always looking, I know. The Ojou who is always persevering in practice, every day, in how to behave, has become beautiful.

「It will be fine. You’re the elegant daughter that is Duke-sama and Oku-sama’s pride.」

「R, really……? I won’t let my parents down…….?」

「Mmm. I think they’re proud.」

「Truly, it will be fine?」

「It will be alright. If Ojou is how she always is, it’ll be good.」

Diligently, until Ojou believes it will be fine, I smile and repeat it.

「Really……?」

「It’ll be fine. Ojou is cool.」

「That isn’t a compliment.」

Ojou’s cheeks slightly swell, pouting.

「Eh, it’s an awesome compliment, isn’t it?」

Being cool, for guys it’s the highest compliment. Why wouldn’t a girl be delighted, I wonder.

「Good grief, Zack is……」

It can’t be helped, says Ojou with a small smile. At last, I see a smiling Ojou, and I also smile widely. Thank goodness.

「Yep, the usual Ojou.」

「!!」

Ojou, who seems to realize what was said, turns red and becomes silently flustered. Certainly, making an unusual noise is embarrassing, isn’t it? She was that stressed, huh? To me, something like royalty is too distant from my sense of reality, but for Ojou it was a real existence, so the pressure that was felt is different.
It’s like the nervousness of a piano recital, isn’t it? No, because I never did something like accomplishing a public presentation, in my past life, I don’t understand. Ah, interviewing for a job is the closest. Yes, for that I was so nervous that I could be my usual self. When I think about that, Ojou is going through a great struggle, huh?
At a party, because she can meet a loveable prince from her picture book, it should be fine for her to look forward to it, right? I wonder if it’s like when I went to my dream country, an interview  with a company was booked. She wants to have fun, but it’s a situation where she can’t enjoy herself.
But, for me, something like a birthparty party or parties are something I enjoy. If Ojou can come to have fun, it will be good.

「Well, have fun.」

When I say that, Ojou squeezes her clasped hands.

「…………Zack should also come.」

Ah. Really, I’m weak.
The faint blue eyes that are truly lonely are shaking. It’s something like a request I can’t do. She knows it’s unreasonable, right?

「Is Duke-sama going with you?」

Suddenly, Ojou was nodding her head.

「Then, it will be fine. He’s your strongest ally.」

「But…… if Zack is there……」

「Ojou.」

I call out to Ojou, who was arguing back, and stop her. It looks like I have to look straight at her and tell her.

「Because I’m not a noble, it’s unreasonable.」

Ojou has a behavior of instantly arguing back that I’ve seen, but swallows her words.

「In addition……」

To my continuing words, Ojou tilts her head.

「I can’t match the formal-like clothes of nobles.」

「……fu, that’s true, isn’t it?」

When I force a smile, it seems to be my imagination that Ojou smiled. Because I understood that I couldn’t be brought along, I wasn’t thinking of a situation where we go together.

「I’m…… sorry……」

She asked a big favor, and after smiling for a short while, Ojou apologizes. For me who wasn’t particularly troubled, I shook my head.

「Then, what’s making you so anxious?」

I wonder if because it’s something she doesn’t have confidence in, she’s become this timid.

「…………..maybe, because of my family status, this is the only chance to dance with the prince.」

「You don’t have any confidence in dancing?」

「Until now, my teacher hasn’t praised me…… so, for me to be fit to dance with the prince……」

Because Ojou mumbles that she’s very anxious, I say it’ll be fine again, smiling.

「You have one month. If you practice, you should be fine.」

「However, I do not want my parents to know.」

She doesn’t want to let her parents know she doesn’t have self confidence in her dancing by increasing the amount of practice. But, from Ojou’s way of speaking, if she does self-training, it seems it should be good.
Does she have somewhere that’s good? Because the sunlight in my self-study garden is too much, in this season Ojou will collapse. If it’s dancing, because it’s ballroom dancing, it seems, a place where the floor is flat is better.

「Ah.」

There was a place.
For a moment, I thought about it, and then remembered a perfect place.

「Right, Ojou. Let’s secretly train!」

「How, how are we secretly doing it??」

I give a satisfied smile, and then lead Ojou by the hand, facing west.
In the west, from the main residence, there’s a distant area connected by a passageway. Maybe it’s use is for when mistresses come, but the Ernest house of now doesn’t even have a single indication of that. The extent of its use is a guest room. There, enough people don’t arrive, but I have things to do in that direction.
The passageway is surrounded by a pond, exactly halfway there is a path continuing to a summer gazebo. The gazebo’s stone cone-shaped roof, under it there’s reasonable space for a small number of people to be able to have a tea party. Given that there isn’t a table or anything like that when there isn’t a tea party, right now it’s empty. For dancing practice, it’s optimal, I wonder?
The gazebo in the middle of the pond is surrounded by a flower bed of miniature roses, and furthermore water lilies are floating on the water’s surface. Because both past their blooming season, for a while this place hasn’t been used for tea parties, I wonder.

「How about this? If it’s here, it’s fine, right?」

「Certainly, it seems that way.」

When I guide her to the center of the gazebo, Ojou slowly looks around as if to check her surroundings.

「Then, do your best, Ojou!」

I make a triumphant pose with both hands, and support her. When specially training, if you call her name out, she’ll get into a fighting spirit.

「R, right now!?」

「Eh? No, first of all, why not?」

Ojou, who thought she was abruptly called to dance, is surprised. I only communicated a simple supporting mood.

「Then,  if you’re practicing, I’ll go back, then……?」

When I thought that because she does not want to be seen, and went back to work, I was pulled back. When I turned behind me, Ojou was there, gripping the hem of my clothes.

「What is it? Ojou?」

She grasped the hem of my clothes that were becoming wrinkled, and Ojou looked up at me in order to stare intensely at me. What in the world is it?

「……You’re going to help me, right?」

「Yes.」

Why does she need a reminder, I wonder. I don’t understand the motivation of what Ojou is saying, but because I really am helping her, I nod.

「If that’s the case, be my dancing partner.」

「Eh!? I, I can’t dance!」

「I’ll teach you the minimum.」

「Eh—」

Isn’t teaching me getting things backwards? That, isn’t this Ojou’s practice? Or rather, with my father…… haaa, it’s unreasonable. If it’s Ojou’s request, it seems I’ll be permitted to leave work.

「Practice will become better when your partner is close to your height」

「U…… I understand.」

I’m not suitable, I think, but when Ojou is giving it her best for that kind of reason, I can’t reject it.

「If that’s the case, starting from tomorrow.」

「Why?」

「I’ll bring an apron. It’s because I don’t want Ojou’s pretty dress to get dirty.」

Because I have an apron that I use for cooking in the small house, so if I put it on, Ojou shouldn’t get dirty.
At the sensation of being pulled, when I was drawn in and moved my line of sight, my clothes were gripped even more strongly than just before.

「…….Ojou. It’s fine, but it’ll get really wrinkled.」

「Ah……!」

Ojou who was hanging her head, became taken aback, and in a panic released her hand. Her cheeks are slightly red, but in addition, she had been doing that for too long. As for the time we practice, we should prepare a towel as well as a canteen for water.

「First of all, shall we go back?」

I put my hand out. And then after that, I notice. Because the road is easy to understand, if you think well on it, joining hands isn’t necessary. Huh? Because if Ojou comes, isn’t it fine to go without linking hands?
When I was thinking I did something unnecessary, I forgot to pull my hand back.
Before I withdrew my hand, Ojou’s smaller hand reached into my bigger one.

「……what is it?」

「Nnn, it’s nothing.」

At the pale blue eyes looking suspiciously at me, I return a smile.
Joining hands and returning along the road, I recall the work I had left. Dangerous. Enough about asking for a favor tomorrow, my father will absolutely scold me about today.
It’s bad, but it can’t be helped. First of all, let’s not be noticed by Ojou.
With a fleeting glance at Ojou, I was relieved even though I didn’t realize I was nervous. Then, I look at Ojou and suddenly think of something.
In any case, if I’ll be scolded by my father, I’ll try to ask for one more thing.

Another one done! Chapter 14 is done, with Chapter 15 just about there. I fell a bit behind in my translation schedule due to me being on the road for some real-life work related items, but if you’ve been keeping up with the manga, I believe 2 chapters from now corresponds to the manga chapter “Waltz”, which was definitely one of my favorite chapters to translate so far.

Actually, overall, this one is pretty fun to translate, so that’s not saying a ton.

As always, thanks for reading! If you want to help support these continuing translations from a one-man shop, then do think about helping spread the site around. Or, if you’d prefer to help keep the site up/domain registered so I can whale for Kal in Arknights, then hit up my Ko-Fi which can be found at the top.

See you all next chapter!

Side Story: The Konpeito That Day

TN: Toasty
ED: Toasty

It seems you don’t remember, however, that isn’t the first time I talked with you, Oshio-kun.

That is, because we’re in the same class, we should have greeted each other, but we haven’t.

As for wanting to talk, the first time I met you was that day.

The day of the entrance exams of Sakuraniwaba High School.

For me that day, certainly I was the most nervous I was in my whole life.

Even though I had studied until the day of the exam. Even though my teachers gave their stamps of approval.

But, miserably above all, I had maximum stage fright.

「……」

During the noon break, I couldn’t even stand up from my chair.

Even though I only finished the first half, I already reached my limits.

Feeling bad, like I wanted to throw up, my whole body is wrapped in a strange floating sensation, and the sound of the same middle school students gathering for lunch was heard extremely distantly.

……I don’t have an appetite to eat. Even one mouthful, I had confidence I would throw it up.

Round and round, round and round, my thoughts went.

When I was looking down at one point on the desk, I felt something similar to the optical illusion of being sucked completely into the desk.

It’s an absurd story, however, at that time, I felt like I was the only person in the world to feel lonely.

Help me……

Finally, I became unable to endure it, and mumbled a little with my mouth. Even if I did that, it doesn’t mean someone will come to save me……

However, at that time, something came from outside my field of vision.

That something was slender and pretty hand, but certainly I understand it was a guy’s, that sort of hand.

「Eh……?」

For me who was brought back to reality, I quite naturally followed the presented hand with my vision.

As it is, when I raise my head and look, it’s a middle school boy, looking down at me with a curious seeming face, it seems.

Right after he observes my face, he mumbles 「What an terrible complexion.」

……gachin, came a noise.

「Please leave me alone.」

I coldly said it straight out, making a declaration of intent to not talk to me.

However, he, with somewhat drowsy eyes, stares at me, and presents a small bag with some kind of intention.

I looked at that, and then unconsciously furrowed my eyebrows.

「……what is this?」

「It’s konpeito.」

「If I look, I can see that.」

Inside the bag are several pieces of konpeito.

White, yellow, pink, when I am looking at those frightfully childish colors, somehow I get the feeling as if I was being judged as an idiot……

「Do you need it?」

No, it’s different, I’m not having a feeling of it—he’s definitely making fun of me.

「Please do not tease me, I’m serious.」

I even express my discomfort.

But, still, with those drowsy eyes, he……

「Your hand, it’s trembling, you know.」

「……!」

I become panicked, and then withdraw my hand back to the desk below.

At that slight embarrassing disgrace, I once again tightly close my lips, 「……do I have a relation with you?」and clearly make an intention of refusal.

But, you, still—」—we do, you know, have a connection. After this, we might become classmates, after all.」If you think about it, it’s easy, it’s an only natural truth.

But, even so, for me, after speaking about something absolutely normal, finally I was able to come back to reality.

The deep haze in my head clears up, and my field of vision improves.

Everyone’s voice, the world, returns to my side.

That’s it, my surroundings right now, several months after, these people might become my classmates.

Naturally, so might the boy in front of my eyes.

Up to the minute I lost sight of such a simple thing, my field of vision had narrowed, and finally I realized.

「Here, my father gave these to me.」

Facing me, who was stiffened like I was confused, he said it with a gentle tone.

「If your head gets tired, I heard something sweet is good, and the effect is something small, the truth is it can’t, but, well, it’s delicious.」

「…….is it okay to have two of them?」

「Here you go.」

He opened his pouch, and on top of my open hand, dropped two pieces of konpeito.

Pink, it’s an especially childish color, but I rolled it over in my hand.

Konpeito….. which reminds me, how long have I been seriously staring, I wonder

I look at it for a short while, then toss in the piece of candy that looks like a small, glittering star, into my mouth.

Rolling it around on the top of my tongue is unexpectedly pleasant, then—unconsciously, I unintentionally smile.

「……it’s an ordinary piece of sugar, isn’t it?」

「That is it.」

He carefully crushes the zipper attached to the opening of his pouch while saying something like a joke.

That sort of thing, when I’m watching that carefree gesture, naturally, words popped out of my mouth.

「……are you nervous?」

「Hm?」

「For the exam.」

「Even if I appear this way, I’m nervous.」

「It doesn’t look that way to me, you know….. what to do if you fail, you don’t think about it?」

「I already thought about it.」

「For example, then.」

「First of all, I’ll apologize to my dad.」

「……Eh.」

At that excessively anticlimactic reply, I stare in wonder.

「……that’s it?」

「That’s it, you say…… it’s something important, isn’t it, because I got money from him for this.」

「No, that isn’t what I meant to say…… a, anxiety for the future, or something like that, that sort of feeling……」

While kneading my fingers together, I convey the anxiety that’s in my chest.
Afterwards, after he’s silent for a little while, he then faces me,

「—well, if that happens, think about it, you know, particularly if you fail, you won’t die, right?」

While smiling, he says that.

……Ah, surely you don’t know.

In the middle of my solitude that I couldn’t do anything about, that mischievous, gentle smile, how much did it save me?

Then, at that time, I used 「love」for the first time in my life—」Then, because I, your friend, will be waiting, do your best.」At the time I looked at the profile of the boy who was hurriedly leaving while making his farewells, not thinking as much as before, I moved my mouth.

「U, um—!」

He turns his wonderful seeming face towards me.

At that, I relax my cheeks, and compared with his, make an extremely awkward smile— 「It was very sweet. Thank you very much.」The results after the test…… it goes without saying, doesn’t it?

Everything is thanks to him.

This is embarrassing, and I haven’t told anyone, however, with that exchange of only several minutes, to me, I was able to pass with the reason that by all means, I wanted to be accepted into that high school.

It seems you don’t remember, however this isn’t the first time I’ve talked with you, Sato-san.

That is, because we are in the same class, saying something like greetings has been done—is what I think, it seems, but it doesn’t seem like that has happened.

You, with your always tranquil face, were a flower at a height no one can reach. To that, of course, I’m not an exception.

Well, anyways, as for when I want to talk to her, the first time I met her.

Sakuraniwaba High School, the day of the entrance examination.

With your face that had become incredibly pale, only one person did not move from their desk when it became the lunch recess.

The first time I was only observing out of curiosity, but when I saw your trembling, shivering hand, I unconsciously made a voice.

「What a terrible complexion.」

After that, we had a short exchange.

I immediately understood you weren’t welcoming, I couldn’t leave you alone by any means.

So I gave it, oly a small piece of konpeito.

Konpeito, for a person who is about to become a high school student, is konpeito.

Even for myself, I didn’t really understand what I was doing.

But, you turned only a piece of konpeito in your mouth as if it was completely a prized treasure, and then— 「It was very sweet. Thank you very much.」It’s completely bitter to my simplicity.

No way, with only facing that smiling face once, for the first time in my life I used the word 「love」.

Anyways, the results after the test… it goes without saying, doesn’t it?

With everything about that girl, it’s thanks to my simplicity.

In any case, the results are all right, however I should apologize to my father.

After all, it’s because, while I prepared to talk with Sato-san, I didn’t even give one millimeter of thought about my father during the second half of the exam.

As for what was in my head, there was only one selfish reason. [T/N: The kanji is “wicked”, but it comes across as too strong.]

—One more time, I want to see that smile of hers. That was my only motive.

Not a ton to say here. I’m about halfway through the next chapter, but I’m almost at the point that I originally started translating the original Sato-san web novel. It’s been a wild ride, huh?

And as always, thanks for reading, and if you want to help support these continuing translations from a one-man shop, then do think about helping spread the site around. Or, if you’d prefer to help keep the site up/domain registered, then hit up my Ko-Fi which can be found at the top.

10. Sunny Spot

「That’s no good.」

Lydia, who rejected the head chef, swells her cheeks.

「How? After all, Zack…..」

「Zach? Ahh, that boy, right? Ojou-sama and him are different.」

At his employer’s daughter looking up at him, the head chef scratched his cheek, troubled.

「It’s okay if I see that guy get a little bit injured, but not Ojou-sama. If, in the one in a ten-thousand chance, you get burned, I will get scolded by the maids and retainers.」

Lydia became sullen, however if she requested any more than that, she would be troubling the head chef, and understanding, dropped her shoulders. Talking to the physically large head chef required courage, but when she tries to talk to him, it wasn’t frightening like that. The head chef was unexpectedly kind and understanding, but at the very least there were results, she wondered.

「I understand……」

「However, wanting to make things such as sweets for that boy, Ojou-sama is admirable, aren’t you?」

「That isn’t it! I’m returning the favor!

At the muscular looking head chef who showed a kind smile, Lydia denied it with a completely red face. Even though she also perks up her previously sullen shoulders, because a threat doesn’t even seem to be there, the head chef’s smile does not vanish.

「Please excuse me.」

Lydia, who could no longer endure the warm look from the head chef turned her heel.
However, she forgot to mention something, and returned, appearing at the entrance of the kitchen.

「I’m sorry for asking such a big favor. For your always delicious cooking, thank you.」

Again, there were traces of intimidation on his smiling face, so she couldn’t say it with a smile, but given that she was able to say only that, after confirming the head chef’s reaction, she left.
Some time ago, after she learned from the gardener’s apprentice that greetings, thanks, and apologies were important things, when she observed people like her mother and father, they gave their thanks to each and every servant. Despite her father being extremely busy, it appears he goes to his servant’s location in order to thank them. Because she had been told about that sort of wonderful behavior of her parents, she was frustrated she didn’t notice it.
Spending time for the purpose of following her parents’ example, becoming conscious of how so far she hadn’t been doing it, in her imagination was embarrassing. She can’t see them and because either looks away or hangs her head, lately sometimes when saying goodbye, there are times she’ll escape.
The day she conveys her thanks with an elegant smile like her parents is far away. However, the reality that she can say it is excellent, said the gardener’s apprentice, praising her. Sometimes, when you aren’t able to properly say it you’ll become disheartened, but because of that, somehow you’ll be able to continue.

But, what’s a good way to give back to him……?

Closing the door to her room, Lydia sighed.
If she can’t make the same thing, what can she give back?
The other day, the gardener’s apprentice gave her handmade cookies as an apology for the meeting over tea. When she heard his important reason, because he did not have a cookie cutter, he used a mug. Being the case she couldn’t go back to the house and eat it, then and there, when she ate it, it had a simple and delicious taste.
Making them, even though he said he wasn’t a guy who was a patissier, was a little annoying, so she hit him with her fists. Always, however, the gardener’s apprentice only made a troubled facial expression when hit, and because it wasn’t painful, she found it very frustrating. However, she decided in her heart she would absolutely pay him back.
Lydia, having no other alternative than getting him back coming to mind, is troubled. That gardener’s apprentice, with the exception of food, what could she give him that he’d be happy, she wonders. He’s a simple gardener’s assistant, but he always looks like he’s having fun. But, what sort of thing would be good, she doesn’t understand.
Speaking of knowing, he held his father who loved gardening in high regard, and the time they ate, he made a happy looking face, and he wasn’t good with flashy things.

……she doesn’t know what he likes.

At the truth she just now noticed, she became shocked. The amount of information she knew about him was too little.
When she tried to rethink, the times she listened to him talk about himself, rather than the times she talked about herself, were nearly nonexistent. That guy, he doesn’t talk about himself unless asked.

Zach is to blame.

As for her insufficient information, when Lydia thought about how he wouldn’t talk on his own accord, she pouted.

「Lydia-sama, what’s wrong?」

Katherine, waiting for Lydia in the room, anxiously called out. Although she entered the room, Lydia, who had not moved, was making different faces, so she was worried.
Even if she made tea to calm her down or ask her, Lydia who was looking down, vigorously raised her head.

「I am going for a small walk.」

She hands over a small, white lace parasol to Lydia. After this, if she goes outside into the all-out summertime that was starting, her precious white skin would be sunburned

「Thank you. I’m off!」

「Take care.」

Near the door, Katherine bows, seeing her employer off. Slowly lifting her head, she watches the back of her master vanish while breathing a sigh of relief.

「It’s Isaac, isn’t it?」

If that’s the case, it’s all right, and at her absurd fear for her master, Katherine smiled.
Shortly after, Lydia found the Baumgartner son and father duo at the edge of the many bushes.
Today they were comparatively closer to the grounds. They were talking about something unusual.
Lydia felt it was unusual that the untalkative Dennis was talking while she approached.
Before she tries to call out, the gardener’s apprentice turns towards her, and Lydia is surprised, stopping in her tracks. He never looks at her until she calls to him.

「Ojou.」

Besides, he was running with a smiling face towards her. He always refuses and goes back to work. Not reaching an understanding of the state of affairs, Lydia reflexively gripped the handle of her parasol.

「She came. Father, is it okay?」

He leads her by the hand, while at the same time asking his father for permission for something. Confirming his father nodded, the gardener’s apprentice grabbed Lydia’s hand and started walking.

「Eh!?」

Being pulled while walking, Lydia looks, alternating between the gardener’s apprentice and his father. Because she couldn’t read his father’s facial expression, she couldn’t comprehend his excitement to go.
Given that he wasn’t hesitating to go on the lawn outside of where Lydia doesn’t walk, Lydia didn’t care. Perhaps he wanted to go somewhere quickly, and was taking the route of a straight line, she wondered. For the speed, Lydia is matching him, but at the feel of grass and dirt under feet, Lydia was bewildered.
Why did this happen?
When she tried to only gather information on him, even though she only visited to talk with him.
If she noticed, they had gone to a place where the trees were tall, and in the gaps between trees sunlight came down. It was completely like a forest. Already she didn’t even understand which direction was where when facing it. However, the gardener’s apprentice didn’t lose his way and advanced forward. Even if was her estate’s grounds, compared to Lydia, the gardener’s apprentice far and away was more well-informed.

「Where are we going……!?」

「We’ve already arrived.」

If you hurry and ask, you’ll get an answer. For her eyes staring at their direction of movement, the joyful colors revealed themselves.
She understood he wouldn’t tell her until they arrived, so for Lydia it was inevitable she went.
Come to think of it, in the confusion, she forgot he had been holding her hand the whole time. When she suddenly realized it, she became strangely embarrassed and wanted to separate, but because now, if she separated she would become lost, somehow she endured that impulse.
Also when she just realized it, willingly or not her eye was drawn to their joined hands. Looking at this, it was different than the meaning she was told. Overall, her visibly exposed skin, usually she has cotton gloves that go down from the wrist and are one shade away from white, but Lydia’s skin is noticeably whiter. Her skin is also smooth and has no roughness. Her father’s large physique was also strong, but had a smoother feel.

This was different, wasn’t it……

He was putting more strength into it, possibly exerting more than he needed to, but kindly holding it. He wasn’t coercing Lydia, she could choose where or not to come along. She felt this sort of thing was sly.
While worried about whether or not to take his hand as well, Lydia got a little bit angry.
Not noticing her current situation, the gardener’s apprentice turned his head to her while saying.

「If you go through here, we’ll arrive.」

「Wait……, this is……」

She was encouraged to dive through the small gap in the bushes. With her dress it’s difficult to pass through a checkpoint, Lydia, as expected, is bewildered. However, she sees the glittering eyes of the boy who wants to show her, unable to fight, she closes her parasol while passing through.
When they pass through the hedges that are a little shorter than them, the sunlight’s radiant assault on the eyes makes you close your eyes. While closing your eyes, from her right hand, at the warmth that went away, she felt a touch of loneliness.
She feels she has gotten used to the radiance on the other side of her eyes, and softly opens them.
Below the sun, the boy spreads both of his hands.

「Here, what am I?」

He declares it with his whole face smiling.
She doesn’t understand the meaning, and blankly stared. Reflected in Lydia’s eyes, in their surroundings of a small water fountain with an owl stone statue enshrined on it, there was only the lawn of a wide plaza. The plaza was good, wasn’t it, to the extent you could lose your way, and from the water fountain if an adult took ten steps, there was a fence. It was surrounded by trees like a forest, and because around only the water fountain sunlight was pouring down, looking up was completely like it was hollowed from above.
The good exposure to the sun, she understood, but nothing else. With the exception of the water fountain it was a minimally arranged place. She doesn’t understand the intentions of the boy who was happily showing her this. In the first place, this place was expected to be contained in her estate, however.

「What kind of……」

「My father said it’s fine to practice here!」

When Lydia asks, the gardener’s apprentice let out an explanation.

「My father and my grandfather, when they were apprentices, they practiced here, I heard! I got permission to use it!」

That is to say, this was Baumgartner house’s place for landscaping practice, for generations, it seems. For a person who can garden, it can’t be helped that he’s happy.

「There’s something I want to try, so I have to save up pocket money.」

What to do with this empty place, he polishes his plan while his eyes look around the surroundings, glittering.

「……then, is it fine to talk about it?」

「Ah」

For a noble, in general they will walk to a place with no path. For Lydia, if he didn’t bring her, she would not know this place existed. The Baumgartner house, without permission from the Ernest’s head of household, inside their grounds were using this place to practice.
Only after being told, does the gardener’s apprentice realize that he willingly gave someone from the Ernest house the secret of the Baumgartner family. While looking at the gardener’s apprentice who just realizes this, Lydia reopened her closed parasol. The boy who showed a reaction, as soon as he came to Lydia’s side, before her eyes bent down and clasped his hands together.

「Please, Ojou, keep it a secret!」

With his just a little troubled upturned eyes, he pleaded, and Lydia was instantly lost for words.

「……it can’t be helped, can it?」

「Thank you, Ojou!」

「I, in the first place, why would you show me!?」

「That is, I wanted to show Ojou……」

When he carelessly pointed it out, he obediently reflected while saying that sort of thing. From the point of view of the gardener’s apprentice, he had the sensation of wanting to show his friend a secret base, and his actions were genuine and had no change from the usual.

「……!?」

At those words from the boy who was like a scolded puppy, Lydia felt her cheeks growing hot. With that, the boy who thought she would get mad further lowered his eyes. Then, when he noticed the blades of grass touching the skirt of her dress, he knelt down on one knee.

「I’m sorry…… it isn’t interesting for Ojou……」

「……From here, what will you do?」

At the regretful facial expression that was a complete opposite from the delightful looking one from a while ago, the cause, Lydia, opened her mouth. At her voice, the reaction of the gardener’s apprentice is to raise his head.

「From here, Zach, you will change this completely ordinary garden, right?  If that’s the case, make it a garden I will like.」

Receiving Lydia’s words, the gardener’s apprentice shows a smile like this sunny spot

「Of course! Because I’ll make it a great garden, please look forward to it!」

From underneath her parasol, it’s expected there’s a shadow, however, Lydia turned her head away from the dazzling sensation of the boy looking up to her.

「No, it’ll really be the best birthday present you’ve gotten until now.」

At the gardener’s apprentice who regained his spirit and resumed removing grass, this time Lydia froze up.
It’s worth the wait, and her gaze slowly returned to the boy who was keenly and happily reflecting. Her surprised facial expression stiffened.

「Just now, what did you……」

「Eh? So, because I became an apprentice, if you see the results of my work after it, it’s because I received it from my father so late……」

「That isn’t it! How did you know when my birthday was!?」

「May, however…..」

The gardener’s apprentice tilts his head in seeming curiosity. Towards him, Lydia’s voice is raised for a reason she doesn’t understand.
It was more than a month ago. At the boy who really doesn’t reply if you don’t ask anything, Lydia becomes irritated.
With an impulse of wanting to hit him, she tightly gripped her parasol and endures it

「……Zach, what, if you do it, makes you happy?」

「What, suddenly asking that.」

「Never mind, just answer!」

「Eh. Um……」

Being pressured by Lydia’s vigor, the gardener’s apprentice doesn’t say anything, but thinks he has to respond. After several beats of silence, he’s worried, and answers.

「If Ojou smiles, I’m happy.」

The boy who is a gardener’s apprentice smiles with an honest feeling.

「!? Not that!!」

At the answer that was completely different from her expectations, Lydia’s face became bright red as she got angry. She doesn’t want him to suddenly say a different or surprising thing.

「Eh. But, things that make me happy……」

「I asked about what, if you receive it, would make you happy! Tell me an object!」

As for Lydia, she asked straight to the point. Having received a curveball, she wasn’t thinking she needed to explain the meaning.
Unconsciously raising her voice, the gardener’s apprentice who was looking at a heavily breathing Lydia, understood her intentions. Then, a seemingly funny and gentle-looking smile surfaced.

「You don’t have to particularly care about me.」

「I care.」

He sees Lydia who is getting angry, and the boy who is a gardener’s apprentice’s smile deepens.

「What I’ve already received from Ojou is good.」

「I haven’t……」

She hasn’t given anything to him that makes him happy. However, she came to meet him today. Despite this, what kind of thing did he already receive from her?

「That stationary. It made me incredibly happy.」

It is a unique thing he received, that Lydia gave him that was written by her own hand.

「It’s my personal treasure.」

Saying that with an intention of that kind that didn’t exist, he says it’s his important thing.
As for herself, she thought she can’t give anything to the boy who is too different from her. That sort of thing doesn’t exist, the boy simply saying that is unfair. She only now feels she is getting it.
Her cheeks are hot. Certainly, because she was outwitted, it’s annoying.
With her emotions gradually rising, the words are lost, and a silence falls on them. To the boy who is gently smiling, how is she reacting, she wonders.
She searches for something to say. Then, she arrives at the words she missed giving.

「……happy birthday, Zack.」

「Thank you, Ojou.」

He was splendidly smiling, wasn’t he?
Even if she had made mistakes, because she had said it to him, it was good. Thinking that, she returned the smile of the gardener’s apprentice.

Wew, there we go!

Chapter 14 is mega long, I spent the last week hammering away at it, but man it’s taking a while. Not too much to say, other than it’s more cute moments between Ojou and Zack. Though if you thought that of this chapter, next chapter ramps it up more, haha

Truthfully I’m more than a little excited for when we inevitably timeskip and hit the point of the otome game starting. It’s going to be a wild ride, for sure.

And as always, thanks for reading, and if you want to help support these continuing translations from a one-man shop, then do think about helping spread the site around. Or, if you’d prefer to help keep the site up/domain registered so I can whale for Ash in Arknights, then hit up my Ko-Fi which can be found at the top.

See you all next chapter!

09. Hydrangea

This chapter was painfully long.

After breakfast, when I’m bathing after finishing my teacher’s quota, some small kids approached.

「Ahhhhh, it’s Zack—」

「Are you going back—?」

「Let’s play—」

「It’s just a holiday.」

Right after the kids find me, I dodge their charge, wipe my upper body with a towel, and put on a top.
I’m also like that, however why do kids remember bad-sounding expressions first? Because they’re joyfully saying it, I understand there also isn’t any ill-will, but.

「You’ll get wet, so don’t come.」

「It’s okay」

「We’ll avoid iiiiit」

「Really, we didn’t even go out the other day when it was raining」

Last year, on days there were heavy rain, I pretended it was a waterfall, and I take care, remembering the scolding I received from my mother. I and the other kids, therefore, do our best to remember that.

「How did you know!?」

「Stupid, it’s a sickle!」:

「You all……」

Bothered by the two, I grabbed both of their cheeks painfully. The kids purposely let out a pained protest. This give and take in itself is like playing around

「Zack, what are you doing?」

Pulled by the hem of my shirt, another kid could be heard.

「Hm? Strength training.」

「Eeeeh, you’re slender, aren’t you」

「After this, we’ll join you!」

When I was just pinching both their cheeks, given that it was pointed out that they realized, I pulled their cheeks longer than I had earlier. In a memory from the past world, until the second growth period, I understand it’s difficult to increase your muscles, but still I think wanting muscles is male instinct, it seems.

「Why?」

Why?

「Why are you suddenly training?」

It’s suspicious, says one of the kids, looking up with his eyes.

「Is that strange? Maria.」

「He has the smell of a girl.」

Maria, you…… that isn’t the speech of a four year old girl. At a remark a child can’t think of, I’m lost for words. Girls, no matter how much time passes, are girls, but does that also apply to toddlers, I wonder.

「Bullseye.」

「No……」

「Bullsssseye!」

「Zack is diiiirty!」

With Maria, who considered my loss of words to be a confirmation, the other kids took advantage and started making noise. How should I take control of this?

「If that’s the case, why?」

I thought that they’d become more severe with another way of denial, but if I counterattacked, sure enough they fell silent. The kids at a loss for words mutually met each other’s eyes.

「According to you, you want to protect people like your mother and your older sister, it seems.」

When I let go of my hands on the boy’s face and ask that, after two of them exchange glances, they nod.

「If that’s the case, getting stronger for the sake of a girl is good, right?」

「I’ll get stronger for the sake of my mom.」

「I’ll beat the hell out of my sister’s boyfriend!」

Johann is good, but Paul’s sister can’t be a lover for some time……

At the words of the boys who raised their fists over their heads, immediately they said words of perseverance. I feel I said too much.

「Then, for the sake of getting stronger, today let’s play like we’re knights!」

「Ehhhh, then, we don’t have time to serve a princess?」

Johann goes to go look for a branch to substitute as a sword for swordplay, and Maria who’s been left as a loose end, gets angry. Paul, a three year old child, doesn’t understand which older person to side with, and teeters between the two.

「It’s fine, isn’t it? Right, Ojou-sama?」

The lively Maria is showing signs of dissatisfaction at being judged to play the role of a princess, but playing the same as the boys is dangerous. I pat her head and compromise.

「……Understood. I’ll look out so Johann doesn’t get in the way.」

Maria’s face sulked and turned a little red, but she reluctantly nodded her head. Paul, who wants to play swordfighting, because his facial expression is bright, I give an excellent smile.

「I’m saved. You, because there are times you forget your strength.」

「That’s childish, isn’t it, are you really older?」

There’s no maturity from five year olds, is there? Like this time, I get the feeling the mental age of girls is higher.

「After,」

Because Maria looks up at me motionlessly, I tilt my head in confusion.

「I’m being deceived, but only this time.」

「What are you saying??」

Even though I ask, she abruptly turns her head away. Her light brown braids swing around.
It’s exactly at that moment when Johann comes back with a moderate amount of branches. Paul can’t wait and rushes to Johann’s side. Both of them are brimming with excitement. Since it corresponded to playing as superheroes in the past world, being able to become a hero makes me glad, it seems. It’s a setting where a knight takes the hand of a princess and duels fellow knights, so a villain isn’t needed. I don’t have to disagree with the villain, I think.

「Be careful not to get injured—」

「What, Zach isn’t playing?」

Surely I would play, Johann thought, as he seems dissatisfied.

「I was asked to run an errand for my mother.」

Johann, hearing and understanding the reason, decided next time we can play, and reluctantly forgave it. Saying my farewells to the kids, I returned to my house.
With mortar looking like any other house in the neighborhood, it all looks the same. But, a business signboard is hung up, and because garden shrubs are put out, each house has its own individuality come out, so for locals it’s easy to distinguish.
The connected house for tailors has colored curtains that are unexpectedly bright.
Because my house, on both sides of the entryway, has plum blossom potted plant, it’s immediately clear which is mine.

「I’m home. What should I buy?」

「Welcome home. First, you should dry your wet hair.」

When she opens the doorway in the foyer, mother is holding onto a new towel and starts drying my hair. For me holding it, I’m already wet, so I can’t use it.

「I think I should go while I’m wet like this.」

「Because it will clear up, you should get dry, I wonder.」

When she replies with an exasperated voice, mother’s way of smiling seemed unlikely. Because the rainy season has already ended, today there’s good weather, therefore I thought I’m fine.

「Really, with you, you’re on the verge of becoming sloppy, exactly like your father.」

「Natalie.」

With a feeling of 「speak of the devil」, father appeared. He only called her name, however, my mother who guessed his intentions, wiped my face, and then only moved her head towards my father.

「No good. For holidays, you promised not to work, didn’t you? Besides, because there’s furniture that’s been fitted badly, I want you to fix it.」

「I understand……」

Sweetly smiling towards my dad, she took out his work prohibition. Diligently making particular preparations, as expected of mother. Nodding, my father, in low spirits, withdrew into the house.
If I think about how much garden work there is, there’s a lot more, and my father is a person with no interest in anything other than work because I always leave him alone. Though because of that, mother gives the order that every four or five days he needs to take one or two days off. I’m told that compared to when I was born, before he would continuously work and collapse, it seems.
While I was having my hair wiped dry I listened to what I needed to buy, and then I repeated it to confirm, memorizing it. During the time my hair is lightly brushed, I tried to listen.

「Is it okay to buy a larger portion of flour and eggs?」

「Why?」

「I want to give Ojou a cake I made.」

「Ojou-sama, you say, from the duke’s house?」

I nodded my head, then explained at the meeting over tea I was summoned to, I was treated to sweets. She doesn’t understand the reason, but because Ojou gave up her cookies, she did not get  to eat much and I wanted to apologize for that, of course.
It’s the same thing, furthermore as for the drop in quality from the handmade version, it might be a discourtesy, but first of all I want to show an attitude of apology.

「What kind of girl is Ojou-sama?」

「Her facial expression is constantly changing, she’s honest, and cute.」

「As expected, you’re your father’s child, aren’t you?」

Mother, who had finished combing, mixed exasperation with laughter, and put her hand on my head. I don’t understand the comparison with my father, and I tilt my head in confusion.

「Why did mother marry father?」

Because I don’t understand, I honestly shake my head. It was abrupt, wasn’t it.

「That person, although he doesn’t talk much, generally says things like beautiful or cute.」

I heard about it from the time I bought potted plants, so I nodded my head. He’s a gardener, therefore my father would naturally say it. So, it became normal for me too.

「And because of that, you hit the mark.」

「Hmmm, that’s the way it is.」

If I notice it, I heard about the start of my parents’ romance. Listening to my parents’ love life is a little uncomfortable, so I lightly slip away.

「That’s the way it is. Therefore, Zack should also pay attention, you know.」

「What??」

Where on earth is this warning coming to me from?

「It’s unthinkable, although don’t say things that will cause a misunderstanding.」

「It’s fine. Because, I only say things I thought about.」

With my reflections of my past life, to me who’s living honestly, that’s an unnecessary worry. I know it’s very important to know to say greetings, 「thank you」, 「I’m sorry」, from the drilling of my mother. When I answer full of confidence, mother smiles with a bitter smile I don’t understand.

「Yes, with this, it’s done. Take care.」

「I’m off!」

Because the sunlight is strong, I put on a cap as mother sends me off. I go to the market district with an empty bag and a purse.
On the main street which extends to the southern tip of Arventrot, in the vicinity of the royal capital there are many expensive stores that cater to the noble class, and the road is very wide because it is used for triumphant returns. Neighboring it, and tied to the central plaza of the capital, is a street market that caters to commoners. At approximately the main street, at each fixed division on the road are a variety of markets with food and other daily necessities for life, blacksmiths, and jewelers, and it’s interesting how the customer base changes from place to place.
For nobles, some way or another it’s irrelevant, but for ordinary people the sightseeing route that goes from the always lively market to the royal capital center plaza is famous.
Since I was asked to go on a shopping errand, of course I went to the area of the food products to buy what I was asked to. Because there are stores I’m familiar with, since I often buy things from them, I’m at ease.

「Because eggs are the last one……」

While confirming the contents of the bag, I think over the shopping list to see if there was anything I forgot to buy.

「Ah, potatoes.」

Shopping is mostly ingredients for tonight’s dinner, so if I think about the menu it’s easy to remember. Tonight, maybe, is stew or gratin. For me, gratin is good.
When I lift my head after thinking about any forgotten shopping, there is a strange feeling. In the market streets where there are lots of people, people are avoiding a place. From a distance I saw something shine.
What is it, I wonder, and go to see the place the adults are strangely avoiding. Because there aren’t voices being raised, it can’t be a fight, because assuming if it was a vagabond, someone would call for the guards. With the exception of that, I don’t think of anything that would cause people to avoid it.

What was that light, I wonder?

Passing through the waves of people taller than me, I arrive at the source of my curiosity. It went Buwaa in short intervals, and I confirmed the truth of what was shining.
If you look straight ahead, it was too dazzling that you unconsciously tightly closed your eyes.
There, somehow, was a noble boy.
Something like uselessly white porcelain skin skin, glittering golden eyes were the main cause of the glitter, it seems, but above all else, the smooth and silky creaseless blonde hair was dangerous. What is this, something like an angel’s ring of light is right there.
The feeling you get if you excavate an ancient treasure, it’s that sort of feeling. His blonde hair is more dazzling than the duke’s house, it seems. 「Golden」 is more suitable than just gold.
First of all, the reason everyone was passing at a distance became clear. If a noble child was conspicuously in the street that catered to commoners, even if you talk kindly to them, you would have to deal with the question of kidnapping.

However, this guy is amazing.

From some time ago, he’s been seen by glancing passerbys, although he doesn’t mind at all. He’s used to receiving looks from people. In the previous world, I haven’t had an encounter with this kind of person, but it’s the feeling of a celebrity. He’s looking around the surroundings, but it’s probably because he doesn’t know this place.

「Are you lost?」

Because I looked, it can’t be helped, and I greeted the golden child. He’s a guy about the same age as me, and he turns towards me and mumbles curiously.

「Lost… child?」

「It seems you lost your way, so I asked.」

The boy who seemed to understand my words gave a small, embarrassed smile.

「I wanted to come to this place and came, but…… because I don’t know the way back, I became lost.」

With his blonde hair dazzlingly reflecting the sunlight, I shut my eyes

「What’s wrong?」

「You, because you’re so radiant, I don’t want to look.」

It’s painful to the eyes. What kind of physical attack power does that blonde hair have? Today, the good weather will be my ruin. Can it get cloudy immediately, I wonder.

「I’m sorry for that.」

Towards me who was turning his head away, to my surprise, after a little while he said an apology. Talking like a boy soprano, this guy is like a famous child actor.

「It’s difficult. I, things like showy blonde hair, I’m not good with. You don’t have to apologize.」

I prefer silver to a sparkling gold, and a subdued silver to normal silver. It’s cool. But, that’s the matter of my preference, and as for this golden child, it’s not bad.

「With this, it’s a little preferable. Right, let’s go.」

I cover it with a hat, take him by the hand, and walk out.

「Eh, where are……」

「If we go to the main street, someone you know might see you. Is there somewhere you were supposed to meet up?」

「Ah…… if I remember right, there is something around the plaza with the water fountain.」

「Then, this way.」

As I took him by the hand, he seems to understand the situation he’s in. In order to not lose him with the many adults, I have no choice but to join hands. Because I made that blonde hair less noticeable, it’s easier to lose him and the adults who see him decrease.

「Why do you think I’m a noble?」

「Because those clothes you’re wearing are flashy and well-made or something, it was obvious.」

At the boy who thought it wasn’t exposed, I’m amazed. It seems they’re very sheltered.

「In the first place, you should select plain clothes, but……」

The golden boy became straightforwardly dejected. The wording wasn’t childish, but the contents were age-appropriate. The incognito exploration is a regrettable failure, it seems.

「In your situation, you should prepare a wig. Light brown or black.」

When I point out how uncommon it is for commoners to have blonde hair, the boy seems to understand. For the behaviors and style of talking that is the same as Ojou’s, he can’t conceal it, but it’s a little more preferable.

「Is that so, next time I’ll be careful.」

Because he nodded extremely seriously, I became worried.

「So you’ll come again…… the next time you come, call me. I’ll lend you my clothes.

「Really?」

Even with his elegant childish behavior, if he wears simple clothes, I wonder if he can dodge preconceptions about him. At my proposal the boy is instantly delighted, but immediately his facial expression becomes gloomy.

「However, a method for me to contact a commoner……」

「I’m Isaac. My father is Dennis Baumgartner, a famous gardener among nobles, so under the pretense of requesting work, send me a letter.」

My father always rejects hearing from other noble houses.

「From the Duke’s house……」

The golden boy also knew about it. At the proof of how much my father’s work was valued, inside I became prideful.

「Isaac, you are wise.」

When I look at the surprised boy, hearing compliments I had never heard, there is a dazzling smile. I reflexively close my eyes.

「You, because it’s dazzling, don’t look over here.」

「……This is the first time for someone like Isaac. It’s rather refreshing.」

「I’m on the verge of getting mad, I think.」

Again, to the boy who’s smiling face makes me want to close my eyes when turn towards it, I very rudely quip. He’s a strange, pretty boy. If it was Ojou, around this time she would excessively scold me.

「Look at things from various points of view, is what my father taught me. Because if you are open minded, you can grasp the correct image of things for sure. So, today I came because I wanted to see people’s living life.」

「Around you are only adults, huh?」

At the boy’s childish words, it’s a similar time to the first time I met Ojou. The direction is different, but it’s like being aware of how to catch up with the adults around you. How are nobles the only childish ones, I wonder.
When I point that out, his honey pupils go round in surprise.

「How do you understand?」

「It’s too wise to say. Make friends and play more.」

「Friends……」

He thinks over something, saying the word slowly. Then, he squeezes back on my hand holding his.

「……will Isaac become my friend?」

「Eh. I’m reluctant, you know. You, you’re too dazzling and your behavior gives me a bad feeling.」

Not only is his appearance more difficult to work with, his head is like an adult’s, and he gives me an uncomfortable feeling. When I honestly reject him, after several seconds he laughs loudly.

「Ahahaha, I wouldn’t be rejected so hard for a personal reason……」

「You, you’re a strange person—」

「I don’t want to be told that by you……」

I was responded to with a smile that didn’t change. Ojou, the other day, was also strange. Normally I can understand it, but only then I couldn’t.

「……Ah, I didn’t give my name. I am Leo.」

「Oh, right. Leo, we’re almost at the fountain……」

「Isaac?」

At how I suddenly stopped walking, Leo tilted his head in confusion. One of the entrances to the area of the commoners’ housing district lines up with the side road. For the purpose of checking if I made a mistake, go in front of the front door. Leo, who is holding hands as not to go astray, follows without understanding the situation.

「As expected……」

「A hydrangea?」

Staying at my side as he looked at the potted plant, Leo tilted his head.

「What about this flower?」

「It’s unusual.」

I replied frankly. Now, in front of my eyes, is a big white-leaf hydrangea. It’s the first one I’ve seen a white one.
The hydrangeas of this country, with the nature of the soil, does not change colors, but changes colors due to the many magical attributes at that place.
However, for the earth element it’s orange, and for the water element it’s light blue, generally. But, with a noble house with many magical elements, it can be dyed with the colors of the inhabitants. Because they like purposely like a color, there are nobles who habitually plant expensive ones as a hobby, it seems.
Certainly, the gardener was asked by the Sorcery Ministry or the Medicinal Ministry to selectively breed this plant. It may be possible to do a simple identification of one’s magical element, or to use it to examine the distribution of spirits in the area. In order to make it easy to carry, it should be improved to be something like a primrose. The clients of that gardener, because the selective breeding is skilled, they may possibly implement it.
First of all, I explained to Leo who was accompanying me how it was rare.

「I understand it’s a rare thing, but in the case of a white one, what element is it?」

「Maybe……」

「Um, what is your business at my house……?」

The gate of the house with the white hydrangea opened, and a princess-like girl timidly appeared. Her eyes are perfect circles, and her hair that is like the golden sun that went to her shoulders is coiled at the ends.
Next to her, I had a feeling of my breath being taken away. Certainly it’s a cute girl who has a lovely spirea-like impression, however I wonder how I’m also surprised at how beautiful she is. Does it feel different than other people?

「Ahh, sorry. I’m a gardener’s apprentice, so this hydrangea is rare.」

She was looking at the two of us, and I explained our circumstances and apologized.

「Rare……?」

The girl who doesn’t understand the reason I thought it curious asked back.

「Maybe it blooms white every year?」

The girl nods her head. For her, because it blooms the same color every year, it’s not a rare color for her, is it?

「Who looks after this hydrangea?」

When I asked, meeting her gaze so as not to scare her, the girl answered while identifying it as if it were a bad thing.

「……M, me.」

At my pressing question, it seems there was a misunderstanding. It seems she thought she did something bad, when I looked at her scared eyes. It’s dreadful, the feeling of bullying something like a small animal such as a rabbit.

「I see. Because it’s the first time I’ve seen a white hydrangea, I only wanted to hear the method it was raised with. It’s blooming very beautifully.」

With peace of mind, when I patted her on the head, for a moment when she understood she was being praised, she happily blushed.

「Only, I only gave it water……」

She was being modest and shy, although when I look, it was taken care of very seriously, it seems.

「That’s it? Then, really, it’s amazing.」

For unusually not doing things such as pruning, the way and size the flower was blooming isn’t unbalanced. Certainly, in order to receive an equal amount of sunlight, she diligently searched for a location to place them, it seems.

「That……」

The girl who seems to not be not as dissatisfied acts shy while seemingly happily smiling.
Which reminds me, until recently Leo wasn’t saying anything, although when I notice and look next to me, he has a blank facial expression while looking at the girl.

「Leo, what is it?」

「Wh!? What!?」

When I lightly hit Leo on the back of the head, Leo is surprised and doesn’t understand the circumstances, protesting against me. For the girl, since I suddenly hit Leo, her round eyes went wide with surprise.

「Were you listening?」

「No, not particularly……」

Not at all, said Leo as he looked at the girl, and when the girl tilted her head in confusion, his eyes were concealed. I don’t understand the meaning.

「Maah, never mind. Then, for showing us the beautiful hydrangea, thank you.」

「Y, you’re welcome.」

When I thank her, she bows.

「Let’s go, Leo.」

「Ah, ahhh.」

The girl who saw us arrive abruptly waved us goodbye until we disappeared.
Leo, who follows as if the hair on the back of his head is being pulled back curiously asks.

「Was it okay to not talk to her about her magical element?」

As for not teaching her about how with elements the color changes, there’s suspicion.

「There’s no conclusive evidence. Besides……」

「Besides?」

「That girl, maybe her magic power is strong.」

If there isn’t a person with a large amount of magical power nearby, hydrangeas will turn blue or orange. At the time of a reaction with a person who is like a litmus paper test, it’s only the case there’s a person above a certain level of magical power.
Leo understands she’s an irregular among the common people.

「What was her magical element?」

「Because I didn’t see it, it might be Light element……

「I found you!」

At the sudden voice, my words are drowned out. Surprised, when we turned towards the direction of the voice, a young man running from the water fountain was there. It seems we arrived at the water fountain while talking.

「Mattheus!」

Leo calls out the name of the young man running over.

「Where in the world did you…… who is this?」

The young man with blue hair tried to ask, but looked at me and stopped.

「Ahh, he guided me here. Isaac, this is…… my older brother.」

「Thanks to you. I could see my younger brother. Thank you. Is there something I can do to thank……」

「No, that’s not needed.」

Although it may be formal, with these circumstances, if I receive anything as thanks, compared to me, Leo will be more troubled. For this certain unreasonable brother scenario, is he his brother or his butler?

「Excuse me, as I have shopping to do. Then, see you, Leo.」

「Until next time, Isaac.」

Leo, waving a hand to see me off, was the same age as the girl we parted from a little bit ago. We’ll really meet again, huh, I thought with a bitter smile.
Saying farewell to me, who said we can’t become friends, with a smiling face, really he’s a strange guy.
I pull myself together and resume my errand. The next day, Ojou, who ate the handmade cookies I made as an apology, for some reason got mad and repeatedly hit me.
As expected, it didn’t suit her tastes, it seems.

MAN THIS CHAPTER just kept GOING. Good lord. I think the only chapter that’s felt so long is the one I’m currently translating (Waltz, Ch 13).

MangaDex is back up, so you might see some ninja updates as I go and sync up names, since they are currently ahead of me in story progress. I’d like for people who come here from the manga and vice versa to not be confused, so if there are any differences I don’t catch, please let me know, so I can sync them up properly.

Lastly, I switched to WordPress Premium so I can get access to some more site features, so you may see some improvements or changes here or there.

With that, geez, summer’s almost at an end, huh? See you all next time!

And as always, thanks for reading, and if you want to help support these continuing translations from a one-man shop, then do think about helping spread the site around. Or, if you’d prefer to help keep the site up/domain registered so I can buy yet Arknights patch to slap on my messenger bag as translation motivation, then hit up my Ko-Fi which can be found at the top.

08. Meeting Over Tea

What kind of situation is this?
Octavia-sama is sparkly smiling, and somehow or another her daughter is there awkwardly. It had only been a few months since she gave birth, but in the middle of Octavia-sama’s arms, one person seems to peacefully raise their hand towards the sky.
I, who from the feeling I had when I was invited, thought I was coming off as cautious, and because I am glancing at Octavia-sama, I’m nervous about my own mother, it seems.
For meeting over tea, I should try to have a more nonchalant feeling, yes?
The fruit tea made in the glass pot is refreshing to look at, and when the maid pours it into the glass teacup, the smell of seasonal fruits drifts up. But, the good smell doesn’t appear to calm Ojou down. For me, touching the unfamiliar glassware is frightening, I can’t instantly reach for it. It’s absolutely expensive, and then breaking it is scary.

“Um, for inviting me for tea today, thank you very much.”

First of all, to buy time, I say my thanks for inviting me. The tea made from many fruits is something that a commoner like me couldn’t drink their entire lives, possibly. I also want to treat my mother to it. I wonder if I can’t keep it and take it home, but even so, walking quickly back home is unreasonable.

“If it’s fine, from here on, if you can keep me company, I would be happy. If it’s Dia, she wouldn’t introduce you at all. At the very least, I have to recover Geordo’s share.”

“Mother—”

If it’s only those two, it’s unfair, said a completely disappointed Octavia-sama, smiling. Ojou, flustered, can’t strongly say anything, and furthermore no words continue.

“Occasionally, if you don’t mind.”

“Maaa, I’m happy.”

If I get my father’s permission, I don’t particularly mind. Being able to eat sweets makes me happy.
Because with Duke-sama, I only occasionally encounter his surprise attacks, the encounter time is short. Perhaps the time for today’s meeting over tea alone will exceed it, I wonder. However, the giant slalom of yesterday was tough. In my past life, it’s equivalent to the time you take too many coffee cups. That, manually, you can evolve into a thrill ride, huh. [T/N: It’s kind of over the top, but I assume he means kind of when you’re at work and drink way too much coffee to keep up with overtime exhaustion, so you get all jittery.]

“It’s thanks to you, that recently Dia has been wearing matching dresses, you know.”

Looking delighted, a smiling Octavia-sama has a dress with the same design as Ojou. I notice The baby rose decoration on the ribbon choker, and a wide U-shaped cut for the dress. Octavia-sama has thin violets, and Ojou has something like the color of forget-me-nots. Around their cat-like eyes, the two of them have matching thin blonde hair.

“Before, she obstinately refused. I’m glad you persuaded her.”

“Um……”

“He didn’t persuade me!”

At that way of speaking that has a misunderstanding, I don’t see a response that would be good, but Ojou places both hands on the table, turning red while denying it. Octavia-sama’s cat-like impression disappears as she comfortably smiles.
Persuaded, that’s what it’s called, but I only listened to her stories, Ojou spontaneously decided it. I’m not doing anything. Duke-sama as well, is misunderstanding.

“Um….. Octavia-sama.”

“It’s difficult to call out to me, isn’t it? Calling me Via is fine, you know.”

She broadly smiles. With Duke-sama it’s fine, and yet despite that smiling face why does it feel like I can’t resist?
Certainly for a long name, because it’s right to shorten it, a short method is comfortable, but Ojou who has an easily understood face pouts and glares at me, it seems. For ordinary commoners like me, I wonder if they would call their own mothers so casually. Ojou always talks about her mother with her eyes sparkling.

“If you’re envious, Dia can also be called by a nickname.”

“!?  I am not envious!”

“Is that so? Then, only I will be called by a nickname.”

Ojou bites her lower lip, looking annoyed.

What is it, I wonder. If she is a threatened kitten, the image I see is an teasing older-cat playing with her tail. Octavia-sama, why don’t you play with Ojou?

Because there are no signs of her interjecting, I look at the scene of these two while worrying. Ojou is reluctant, but I’m getting the feeling I have to call her by an abbreviation. But, Ojou hating me is something I want to avoid.

“Um, then, Oku-sama.” [T/N: So I nearly died of laughter here because “oku-san” comes dangerously close to “wife” (“oku-san”, however, refers to someone else’s wife.)]

If it’s a compromise for the particular nickname, how is it, I wonder.
The two of them, after looking at me blankly, one had a pleasant smile on her face, one had a face that was turning red and getting mad.

“You can’t give Mother a strange nickname!”

In the end, Ojou got mad. What was the best thing I could have done?

“Fufufu…… it’s good, you know. Using that way of calling me……”

“Haa……”

Oku-sama is really on the mark. Ojou’s sister in her arms holds her hands up and moves them, cheerfully raising her voice. What kind of funny thing did I say?

I lose heart, someway or another, and start to work on the tea. It’s delicious, with the refreshing smell and sweetness of fruits. It’s warm and sufficiently well-prepared, but from time ago the temperature seemed higher, yet for her, I wonder if that cold way is good.

“Ojou, can I borrow you for a moment?”

I try to calm her down, and the Ojou who was holding a teacup sits in stillness.

“You will have your own share, it seems.”

“Don’t worry about that.”

I stand up from my chair and then to the puzzle Ojou, I go and reach out with my hand. Ojou doesn’t understand me as it is and hands over her teacup.

With both hands I wrap the teacup and then wait a few seconds. With this much, it’s fine, right, is my feeling, and incidentally I return the teacup to Ojou.

“Here you go.”

Ojou tilts her head to the size while receiving it, first of all I drank a mouthful of black tea.
Her pale blue eyes open wide.

“Has it cooled down a bit?”

“What are you saying!?”

“Eh. It’s cooled down only a little, however.”

With magic, it’s cooled down only a little. Because it does not mean it’s frozen, a lot of magical power isn’t used. With my progress in magical power, to this completed magic, why is she so surprised?

“How can you use magic without an aria!? Besides, this is ice magic, then……”

“Isaac-kun has two magical attributes?”

“No, I just trained with other attributes a little. Because wind is next in terms of magical power, it’s only reasonable to use it.”

However, for the ice element that uses water and wind elements, it can’t surpass the limits of my scarce wind magic.
I, using a shabby magic, tilt my head in confusion.

“……This is my first time seeing someone use magic outside their element.”

After several beats of silence, Oku-sama mumbles in admiration. Which reminds me, this is my first time showing someone outside my house using another element. Because I thought it was an extension of water magic, I didn’t mind much. Maa, because it’s to Ojou and her mother, it’s fine, right?

“……but, the aria!? Without considering that, how are you able to use magic?”

“Eh. I hope the spirits will help me.”

To my answer, Ojou opens her mouth in silence.

“Spirits…..? Instead of using magical power for the price……?”

“I can’t summon spirits with my magical power.”

It seems Ojou can’t understand, making a facial expression, but I also don’t understand, tilting my head in confusion.
I know there is a spirit, that’s the extent of my magical power. Viewing it as Ojou or someone from the Ernest house, the ability to summon spirits is there it seems, but.  For the case of low magical power, according to the use of magic, you use things like a chant as an intermediary to pay the cost of magic. For commoners, the low use of magic is influenced by the incredibly low literacy rate.
Maybe if there is a meaning to some extent that accompanies a spell you think of yourself, a certain magic is used. But, because I don’t want to bear the risk of that dark history, without an aria I use the assistance of a spirit. Putting chunnibyou into practice is scary. [T/N: I died of laughter at this reasoning. Other note, chunnibyou is literally “8th grader disease” where kids around that age have incredible delusions about having superpowers and coming up with crazy incantations to activate them.]

“……you see, Isaac-kun. For nobles, how many spirits they can summon is with magic a part of their status.”

Therefore, in the first place, receiving help from the spirits, the general concept doesn’t exist, Oku-sama explains.

“Heeeh, so if your magic power is great, it’s that kind of experience, huh.”

Bulldozing with power, huh? It seems nobles are troublesome.
Hm? So that means……

“So I’m strange?”

When I point at myself and ask, Ojou firmly nods her head.

“It is unusual.”

“I don’t think there are any examples of a commoner going to the extent of trying to use that ambitious magic, you know?”

I receive confirmation from Oku-sama.
Are you serious? Because Father and Mother said nothing, I didn’t think it was an unprecedented situation.

“In what way is receiving help from the spirits……?”

Ojou comes to listen as well, listening intently. Experiencing something like having a fairy companion is a story girls like, is it?

“……is that a habit?”

“What do you mean by that?”

From when I thought about it and understood, Ojou made her eyes look as if she was fooling around.

“Look, it is like saying thanks.”

“That?”

When I put my hands together and show her, Ojou also seems to suddenly understand, but I’m not convinced.

“That, the time you’re humming an aria also, if you put in the feeling of giving a little thanks, they’ll be delighted. At the time Ojou is taking lessons with musical instruments, with that feeling, if you play, you’ll understand, I think.”

“With that sort of feeling……”

By no means does she believe, by the facial expression Ojou is making, and when I was worried about how I can make her understand, one more thing came to mind.

“Ah. An offering.”

“Offering??”

“Look.”

I return to my seat, then on my plate distribute three cookies, and clap my hand twice. Then, pressing my hands together, I close my eyes and pay my respects.
When after several seconds, I open my eyes, half the cookies were already gone, as if during the period my eyes were closed they had dissolved into air.

“How is it? Was Ojou able to see the spirits?”

Because of the confirmation the cookies had disappeared, Ojou who was staring intently at the plate quietly nodded.
At the time I receive snacks, I’m sure to leave half to a third as an offering for the spirits. When I was more of a child, Mother taught me there were spirits even if I could not see them, so I tested if they ate sweets. The experiment was a success, and then finding out spirits existed was fascinating, and so it became a habit.
Because Ojou sees, I’m a little more excited than that time, it seems.

“That is amazing……”

“Does Ojou want to try?”

Understanding it’s good if she also does it, Ojou straightens her back.

“Here you are, if you think with that kind of feeling, it will be transmitted.”

When I taught the simple way of doing it, Ojou nodded her head and then faced towards her share of cake. It’s a scientific experiment intended for children, huh. I understand her heart is racing.
Ojou clapped both her hands together more respectfully than me, and bowed slightly to the cake.
Ojou, who for a moment, gently opened her eyes and then peeked, at the situation of cake disappearing, separated both of her hands as her face sparkled. Certainly, to Ojou, she was seeing the spirits eating the cake, it seems. With that being like a picture book, it’s fun, and she understands me.

“I, I was able to do it……”

The cake is disappearing from the plate and when we mutually look at each other, Ojou delightfully reports a success.

“If they grow fat, it’ll be terrible, so therefore, do it in moderation.”

When I told her not to give too much, Ojou again nodded her head obediently.
In the same way as field and wild animals, it’s no good to overdo the offerings if there is no intent to use them. Because it seems Ojou has more chances to eat sweets than I do, she needs to be properly careful.
As for spirits growing fat, I don’t know, because I can’t see them.
Ojou, without any words, had a sparkling facial expression, and stared at the cake disappearing from the plate. Then, she noticed the smiling Oku-sama’s gaze, blushed, and then drank the tea I cooled down. Either she doesn’t want Oku-sama to get involved, or she wants to calm down, it seems.

“I’m glad Isaac-kun was here.”

I looked at Ojou, who blushed and curled up, and mumbles to Oku-sama. For being happy that Ojou was having fun, I’m the same, and understand this, however, how does my existence have an influence, I wonder.
I wondered about Oku-sama’s strange way of thinking.

“Um, is it okay to hug?”

Going to Oku-sama, I extend both hands in the direction of Ojou’s younger sister.
She hugs her more often than in the beginning. She’s a noble, therefore she gets assistance from someone like the maids as expected, however, if you imagine it, when the family is there, Oku-sama is always embracing her. For meeting, it’s the second time, however, that’s the limit of what I heard from Ojou.
Oku-sama opens her pink eyes a little bit. Then, she smiled like soft flowers.

“It’s fine, you know.”

“Thank you very much.”

Tightly holding onto Ojou’s sister who was gently handed to me, I return to my seat.

“I can hold her as well.”

“It’s good that Ojou became able to hold her head up high.”

Ojou, whose face is saying “unfair”, raises a hand and makes her claim.

I, knowing Ojou’s physical offensive ability, judge that I don’t have the physical power to support Ojou’s sister and stop her. But, since she hasn’t held her sister yet, Ojou’s cheeks swell.

“Does Isaac-kun have siblings? You seem used to it, however.”

Seeing Ojou’s sister being hugged, Oku-sama tilted her head a little.

“No, I don’t have any. People in the neighborhood requested something like this.”

In Shitamachi, both of my parents are working, when neither of them are absent, I, who wasn’t working, was asked to play with kids from the neighborhood. Of course you don’t entrust just children, so a group of housewives will follow during a break in their housework.
As I wasn’t as old as all the older guys and girls who started work, until last year I was asked. Now, also following that example, during holidays I’ve been asked to do the same.

“Isaac-kun can become a good husband, huh?”

How, I wonder. In the case of my memories of my previous life, because I didn’t have the experience of having a girlfriend around my age, I have a hard time feeling it.
Besides, presently, I don’t have an interest in romance. An older woman in the neighborhood, as a joke, called out to her husband’s daughter, but she finds the person who changed her diapers disagreeable.
For now, I’ll take the compliment, and was thinking I should give my thanks when my stomach rumbled.

“Ah.”

Oku-sama recommended which cookies were good to eat, but right in front of me was a small plate that had been emptied by the spirits, and on the opposite site was a large plate with a second helping. Then, in my arms is Ojou’s sister.
Maid-san had again distributed three cookies to me and Ojou, but I can’t move.
Ojou, who can move normally, ate her share, and stared at me while my stomach growls. It’s good, and it seems clever.

“…………what is it?”

At my gaze and the sound of my stomach, Ojou, who is having difficulty eating, stops with a cookie held in her hand.
There’s something I want to eat, but being in the state of being unable to eat is surprisingly torturous. Somehow or another, I can’t eat, only that idea occupies my thoughts.

“Please.”

I turn in Ojou’s direction and open my mouth.

“!?”

Ojou’s eyes widen and her face turns red at the same time, realizing she had done something silly and becoming embarrassed. Because it wasn’t a well-aged man asking, for Ojou this kind of thing should be simple.

“Sorry……”

While feeling shy as my cheeks were dyed red, I hang my head a little. Then, I exactly meet the pink pupils of Ojou’s younger sister. I’m happy to meet those eyes, it seems, and if she’s happy because I talked, she smiles back.
Dangit, I should have at least ate one before I offered it.
When I made my regrets at this point in time, a sweet smell tickled my nose. Lured by the sweet smell, when I lifted my gaze, right in front of me was a cookie.

“……I, it’s Flora’s fault, so.”

It can’t be helped, Ojou’s expression says, her head turning away while holding out the cookie. Whether it’s frustrating or unsatisfied, around her eyebrows as well as her face are an amazing red. With a face like just before she gets mad, the cookie held in her hands trembles. If it’s that much of a disgrace, she doesn’t have to do it.

“Eh, but……”

When I thought it was a little bad that I should I refuse, my stomach growled again.
I, who can’t go against my stomach after several seconds of hesitation, lean over Ojou’s hand, biting into the cookie to eat it.
Surprised, Ojou draws her hand back. After strongly chewing and eating, I laugh.

“It’s delicious. Thank you, Ojou.”

As expected of the sweets of the duke’s house. the sweetness isn’t too heavy, and it has an elegant flavor to it. The crisp texture was also enjoyable.
At the flavor of a cookie I can’t ordinarily eat, I’m grateful, and Ojou was struggling with something.
She can’t return to her seat and eat, I was thinking, and from my plate Ojou picks up one more cookie and presents it to me.

“Is it fine?”

As expected, because she’s turning her face away as it is, with a seemingly satisfied look, Ojou slightly nodded her head.
I don’t really understand, but I’m grateful for being able to eat food I want to eat, so I give my thanks.

“Thank you very much.”

From there, again I held the cookie in my mouth.
In the end, for some reason Ojou gave me some more.
That day, when meeting for tea, it feels like Ojou was not able to eat a lot. Next time, I’ll have to give her an apology.

These two are so precious, man.

Wew, either way, there’s another one done! I hope everyone had a good 4th of July if you celebrate it. Either way, I have Ch11 translated now and started on Ch12, and am starting to really get back into a good pace translating these, haha. Not a lot to say other than the usual.

And as always, thanks for reading, and if you want to help support these continuing translations from a one-man shop, then do think about helping spread the site around. Or, if you’d prefer to help keep the site up/domain registered so I can buy yet another Touhou Fumo as translation motivation, then hit up my Ko-Fi which can be found at the top.

Chapter 1: Salt-God Sato-san

The flower garden that was this store’s pride—at a seat on the terrace that can look over it, was one high school girl.

「No…… pull back, if the photo taken is from further back, will it be good, I wonder……? No, close-up photograph…… needs dazzle……」

Across the screen of her smartphone, she was staring at a freshly made pancake.
While looking at that girl from a distant view, I mumble a few words.

「Sato-san…… right?」

Sato Koharu is in the same class as me. She has the nickname Salt-God Sato-san. Soft black hair cut into a bob cut that was skirting her shoulders, long slitted pupils, and a passing nose. She was a girl who was exactly in the middle of cute and beautiful, and because of her appearance, she draws a lot of attention. Koharu, with that name being cute, also helps, and up until now, the kinds of people who try to get closer with her, their amount is unknown.

However, now, there isn’t one classmate she’s gotten close with, and for what reason?

—In the first place, I wasn’t that close with her.

As for ikemen in the other class, the moment they recklessly invited her for a date, from Satou Koharu, they were bestowed the legend-like reply.

From when ikemen call out to her, a little seconds after the event, in that time she didn’t move her facial muscles. She didn’t move her facial muscles at all, or something like that. ……Did she not understand?

For Sato-san, her facial expression, of course, there was no favor between men and women, and no matter who, she always had a cold reception to them.

「No」 「It’s bothersome」 「So what」 「Can you leave already?」

And so on……, there is a lack of warmth and only uses set phrases, but because of the complete lack of expression, it’s like a shotgun was fired. [T/N: Literally “recorded language”, which I took as “phrases she prepared beforehand”]

Even still, as for drawing in people, it’s wholly the work of this girl’s overly-prepared appearance.
Maa, to this, people recognized the achievement of systematically shooting down anyone who could successfully get close, and in the end she was given the nickname 「Salt-God Sato-san」.

Apart from that……

「Sato-san, what are you doing there alone……?」

That girl, now, previously in my eyesight, while staring into her smartphone, was swinging her upper body, repeating something like 「Ah」 or 「Hm」 over and over again.

I guess, because of the situation, she is trying to take a picture of the pancake, it seems……

「……such a serious face for taking a picture of a pancake, really.」

It seems she’s concentrating greatly, and from just a little ago, when I was delivering the pancake here, she didn’t recognize me.

No, this is Sato-san, so if it’s not recognizing a classmate, the possibility is very high, but. If you hear it from the person in question’s mouth, your heart will be broken, so she also pretended not to recognize me.

By the way, this innocent high school boy’s name is Oshio Souta. Here, I am at my part-time job in “cafe tutuji”, a hideaway-like garden cafe in Sakura Niwaba city.

From my experience as a part-time worker—although as for that part time job, I’m the only one, however—a guest coming to the store alone is unusual. For high school girls, even more.

Moreover,

「From which angle is the best to take a picture……?」

……what, she’s even mumbling an interesting monologue. Not noticing it is unreasonable.

Nonetheless, this girl right now is a customer, it’s not good to listen too much.

I change my mind, and then draw back to the inner parts of the shop, and at that time.

「—Hey girl, what are you doing?」

Somehow, I’m disgusted, the reason being that manufactured sweet voice that could be heard, and when I look back over my shoulder I see that at the adjacent table three college guys are trying to establish a connection with Sato-san.

Sato-san is a little bewildered at the abrupt greeting, but immediately recovers her usual beautiful lack of expression.

「Do I have a relation with you?」 [T/N: Literally “Relation, exists?” I could have done “Do I know you”, but this one sounded more distant.]

At the cold voice like one’s spine freezing, I unconsciously let out an 「Oooh…..」 of admiration.

Salt-God Sato-san, even out of school, is going strong.

However……

「Haha, that’s cute, being on guard like that, you know.」

「You’re taking a photo for Minsta, right? Lend me your smartphone, I’ll take the picture for you.」

「Incidentally, let’s exchange MINE contact info. Sharing, you know, sharing.」

The college boys carelessly laugh while not paying attention. Sato-san’s cold reception isn’t getting through.

On the contrary, against her will, Sato-san’s smartphone is snatched from her.

「W, wait……!」

As one would expect, Sato-san is at a disadvantage.

I promptly turn on my heel, and rapidly draw close to the college students, and standing ahead of them—

「This isn’t that kind of store.」

Saying that, I point to the poster at the entrance of the store prohibiting picking up women.

「Because this girl will be troubled, it’s good if you stop.」

For Sato-san it’s unnecessary, but with her clear tone she had plainly asserted herself.

The three college students with Sato-san play stupid while looking up at me.

「Hahaha, not a chance, part-timer, you’re only standing and talking, aren’t you?」

「Yeah, yeah, quickly go back to work, you want our money, don’t you?」

……looking at that grinning face, it seems there is no intent to stop.

Then, I also have a thought.

I inhale, and then turn towards the kitchen, and shout.

「—Daaaaaaad! There’s a customer saying your pancake is beautiful and tasty!」

「Ha?」

At my abrupt, eccentric behavior, one of the college students leaks out a voice.

However, the foolish boys instantly turn pale.

The reason is in the next moment, from the inner parts of the store they see something come out like a Western movie, a muscular man with a strong face, shoulders square looking directly this way.

This is only a theory, but their fear was an appeal to instinct.

「Hyi—!?」

「Oi, this is dangerous, dangerous, dangerous!!」

「Is he going to kill us!?」

The rest is very quick.

The other person is a high school student, therefore they could look down upon them, were the faces of the college students, but they scattered and ran away, and in an instant, disappeared.

For the late-arriving muscle daruma, seeing this, the literal daruma firmly frowned and barked.

「—they escaped again! I thought today for sure I could reach them!」

By the way, the name of this muscle daruma is Oshio Seizaemon. He is the owner of “cafe tutuji”, and my father.

Because his appearance is excessively Western, usually he is withdrawn in the kitchen, but his dream is someday a customer will say to him directly 「This beautiful pancake is delicious」.

He’s run this shop for seventeen years, but it seems his dream has not come true yet.

Anyways, I rush over to Sato-san, who had been taken aback.

「Sato-san, are you okay?」

I wasn’t noticing it, forgetting how to call her, and accidentally carelessly called her by her name. Though I can’t call her name, she looks up at me, surprised.

「Oshio-kun……?」

Ah, she remembers my name…… I’m probably happy but my chest is filling with something like an arrow, when  Sato-san suddenly hugged me.

「Eh……?」

From Sato-san’s pupil, warm droplets are supplied to my shirt. Then ,she,

「U, uuu…… that was scary……!」

……Salt-God Sato-san, what is this?

That Sato-san buried her face in my chest and is crying. At that attitude outside my predictions, freezing up for a short while is my failure.

—Am I an idiot? With what reason I have, the expectation that a shop with a crying girl outside is good doesn’t exist, it seems.

「Dad, sorry, but I’ll be bringing her inside for a bit!」

「It’s fine! Your dad will do his best!」

Dad doesn’t ask for any particular reason, and with that reply he understands, incidentally showing off his front double biceps.

……is leaving it to me okay, or is it just a nuisance?

No, that sort of thing……!

「Sato-san, this way.」

I lend the no longer sobbing Sato-san a shoulder while, for now, guiding her from the part of the house that is the cafe—that is to say, I guided her to my room.

「……delicious.」

Sato-san, who was sitting on a chair, turned red, closed her eyes, and let out a breath.

In her hand is a teacup with rising steam.

「It’s Earl Gray, it’s the one I always drink.」

Sitting down on the bed on the opposite side of the room, saying that much I tasted my portion of black tea.

You can smell the showy aroma of Bergamot oranges and refreshing citrus mixed together.

Maa, cutting out the difficult parts, I’ve heard it’s a flavor that naturally calms you down like taking a breath.

Sato-san, right after, several times, little by little lifts the teacup to her mouth—finally it seems like she’s able to sort out the circumstances. Trying from the teacup, with apologetic upturned eyes, she stares this way……

「Oshio-kun…… do you know about me……?」

「……」

Someone who doesn’t know Salt-God Sato-san who goes to the same school, likely there aren’t any, I think, but.

「I know, I thought of calling out but hesitated, but since Sato-san was making a very serious face while looking into the smartphone, I stopped.」

The truth is, I can say with confidence, that it’s just scary that I would not be recognized, but it’s somewhat of a lie of an innocent high school boy’s circumstances……

「With such a serious face, what were you doing?」

「Uu……」

She didn’t want to be asked, it seems.

Sato-san let out a noise and blushed, flustered. On the edge of the tea cup, restlessly both of her thumbs fidgeted.

……truthfully, what was Salt-God Sato-san?

「No, if you don’t particularly want to say it……」

「……O, Oshio-kun! Here, won’t you look!?」

During the time she was fidgeting with her thumbs, it seems she found some kind of determination. Sato-san says she was eating, and presents her smartphone.

The smartphone cover is really one sold as Yen shops and is plain, and because of that any decorations are missing, you wouldn’t think it’s a high school girl’s with its appearance.

Sato-san isn’t as cold as this phone.

「What happened to your smartphone?」

「That…… that, a photo……」

Saying that, Sato-san timidly pointed to the smartphone’s display.

There, photograph files are displayed in a row.

「…..is it okay if I look?」

Looking into the photo folders of a high school girl, what kind of crime would I be accused of, I wonder?

That is the only reason I timidly asked, and while her face was red like an apple, moment by moment she repeatedly nodded her head.

I leave my hesitation behind, although, when I look into the display,

「…what is this」 I say unconsciously, my voice leaking out.

No, of course I understand the contents. From end to end on the screen, amassed photos of sweets taken until now are displayed.

Maaah, if it’s to this extent, 「Heeh, you have a sweet tooth, that’s fine, isn’t it, I think that’s cute」 and so forth, making a comment like that is safe.

However…

「Sato-san, for taking photos, you’re a little unskilled, huh……」

My straightforward thoughts unconsciously leapt out from my mouth, and Sato-san face, up to her ears, was dyed bright red.

No, a little bit more…… it was incredibly unskilled.

To a girl I don’t usually talk to, I would say it confidently, but it’s hopelessly bad.

The shine, among other things, was a problem.

For example, this photo of cake, it was entirely too dark, and then if at first you can’t recognize it as food, the feeling of it looking delicious, there isn’t one millionth of it.

And this is especially cruel, but…… this, this kind of photo I don’t really understand.

With frail backlighting, far from food, on the whole screen white is leaping out, in the first place what is even being shown, it isn’t definite.

Eh, what is this? The moment the shutter closed, did a meteorite fall down?

—when I try thinking about it, as for having just been taken, just some time ago, Sato-san took pictures of my house’s pancakes. This is a joke, it seems.

The numerous shocking photos, from the top of the folder to the bottom, were crammed in and completely filled it.

When I am completely dumbfounded, while Sato-san’s shoulders shake little by little, she slowly opens her mouth.

「It’s embarrassing to say but, the truth is I…… don’t have friends……」

「Eh? Surely, you……」

Surely, I thought she had no interest in other people. I was about to say that, but I shut my mouth in a panic. That was dangerous! As expected, that’s too rude!

「I, is that so…… it’s unexpected, isn’t it?」

「I, when the talking seems like it’s boring…… I immediately separate and leave……」

「……」

Wrong, you’re wrong, Oshio Sota. This isn’t something like a lead up to a joke, therefore I absolutely wouldn’t tsukkomi. Sato-san, now, is honestly confiding her troubles to me……! [T/N: Tsukkomi is basically the punchline in a Japanese 2 man comedy, where the “boke” does something dumb and the tsukkomi reacts to it. Basically, the straight man.]

「But, as expected, because I’m also a high school girl, I also want friends…… so……」

「…….So?」

「If I became a Minstagrammer, then can I make friends, I thought…….」

「…..」

I tightly hold my mouth in a straight line.

You mustn’t laugh, you mustn’t laugh, Oshio Sota!

「……I, I like sweet things, and so something like after school or on the weekend, I often go to eat sweet food alone. So, if I submit it to Minsta, I can have such things like a topic of conversation with everyone……. 」

「Mi, Minsta, huh, yes, that’s something high school girls do……」

…..now then, more or less, it’s a compliment.

Minsta is an SNS application where the main submissions are photos, and is the abbreviation of Minstagram.

Highschool girls nationwide use it along with a great number of celebrities—-in plain words, you aim for communicating with a large number of people with stylish photos, it’s that kind of app.

Then, a Minstagrammer is a person who uses this app.

「G, that’s good, isn’t it! If you submit photos to Minsta, everyone’s public opinion of Sato-san will change, right!?」

That was my real intention.

Well, already my opinion changed and made a comeback.

After all, that Salt-God Sato-san, is visiting stylish cafes on holidays, and is indeed uploading pictures of sweets onto Minsta, right?

If it bears fruit, because how others looks her changes, it seems, she’ll make friends immediately…… when I thought that, Sato-san speaks with a voice that could vanish at any moment,

「But, I’m a little unskilled at taking pictures…..」

A little…….?

「If I put that photo on Minsta, from the next day, I’ll encounter fierce teasing, won’t I, and that makes me anxious…… they’ll hide my indoor shoes and put thumbtacks in them……! When I think about that, I can’t make an account…..!」

Saying that, Sato-san’s face turned pale.

Sato-san, I thought you were at the top of our grade, but, in reality, are you an idiot……?

—however, haaaah, I understand the main point.

Sato-san’s troubles are that she’s a girl called Sato-God Sato-san by everyone, but the reality is she’s a girl not like that at all.

Then, for that girl, the present condition is something she is making an effort to change.

「Can I borrow this for a bit?」

「Eh? I, it’s fine, what are you……」

Holding onto her smartphone, I start up the camera application.

After that, with an accustomed hand, I make changes to the lighting, select the filter, and then the sound of the shutter going pikon is heard, the photo is saved.

「Yep, here you are.」

「……?」

Sato-san who was originally suspicious, right after she looks at the screen, her pupils that were wide as it is opened up wider—

「This……!」

Ahead of the surprised Sato-san’s sight, on the smartphone display, now, was a picture of deep red tea like one on Minsta.

「You’re more skilled than me…..!」

That’s the case, isn’t it

「H, how……! T, this…… Oshio-kun!?」

Sato-san says my name, but I wonder if it isn’t from excitement.

I take out my own smartphone, and reply to that question.

「—I also do Minsta…… more exactly, I run “cafe tutuji”’s official account.」

Displaying on my smartphone is Minsta’s main page.

My father is unfamiliar with SNS, so there the photos I’ve collected of “cafe tutuji” until now are arranged in a row.

A menu signboard for pancakes, limited time flavored teas, and then the flower garden in full bloom.

Overall, with the submitted photos, the follower amount……

「5,000 followers……!?」

Sato-san sees it, but as if she couldn’t believe it, her gaze keeps going back and forth from me to the smartphone screen, whispering,

「You’re a Minstagramer……」

she mumbled.

……I see, Minsta was part of those guys’ diversion in their strategy of picking up girls, although it seems I wasn’t entirely mistaken.

At any rate, Sato-san’s opinion of me had changed into someone completely respetable.

With that one hour, there are two things I understand concerning Sato-san.

First, Sato-san is cold, but the reason for that is she has no interest in strangers, but the reason isn’t a lack of emotion towards them, rather towards other people she is extremely nervous.

According to the person themselves, 「I, from back then, when I would chat with people, the nervousness would make me freeze up, and the number of words I spoke became less and less…… ah, if it’s my mom, I’m fine, you know!」 If you look at her condition and examine it, it isn’t as much as expected. Salt God Sato-san’s true character was a mere extreme fear of strangers.

…..what’s that.

Then, one more.

Her taste in taking photos is catastrophic.

「Th, this time, how is it, I wonder, Oshio-kun!?」

「No……」

I scowled at the girl’s smartphone that was presented to me so full of confidence, groaning softly.

More or less, if I prepare to say it, this doesn’t mean I can judge if the photo is good or bad.

How can I do that, as if that’s the case, I’ll break this girl’s dainty heart, if I tell her that this photograph is the worst?

As for the words I’m selecting, still— 「 ……No, it’s terrible, I don’t understand how」 In the end, I decide to honestly report it.

No…… already, I don’t have a sense of art. I wonder how you can take a picture of ordinary black tea to make it look like it isn’t delicious at all…… is that her one and only talent……?

With that sort of feeling, at the time my thoughts even started to break into that area of philosophy, I recognize that Sato-san since some time ago has been silent.

Suddenly coming to my senses I lift my face and when I look—Sato-san is close to crying, and her shoulders trembling, aren’t they?!

「Eh, wait…… Sato-san?」

「I…… it’s fine if you don’t say it, isn’t it……?」

My lips are sharp in her eyes, and her large eyes shake.

—this is dangerous.

「—Ahh! No, but, um…… yes! You’re better than last time…… I think!」

「Really!?」 [T/N: Nice save, Oshio.]

At that moment, Sato-san’s facial expression brightened.

……for lies that don’t hurt people, they’re a gentle lie.

Or perhaps I should say, just what is Salt God Sato-san!

She’s extremely full of emotion?!

「If I keep practicing a little more, I wonder if I can become a famous Minstagramer.」

Ah, hold on, it was only a little praise and yet in an instant she got carried away.

As it is, that disgusting photograph will be released onto the seas of the internet. That much, I must absolutely avoid. For her sake, and for the sake of the world.

I was spurred on by a sense of duty, and from my bed went around the girl sitting in the chair.

「But, doing it this way is better, I think.」

「Eh? Oshio-kun…..?」

「Start up the camera app.」

「Eh…… y, yes,I did it…… h, hya!!?」

When I, from behind, extended my arm, accompanying her hand on that was holding the smartphone, Sato-san let out a high pitched scream. It screeched in my ears.

「Uwa, you’re surprised.」

「S, susususu, I’m surprised!? Your hand…… is also close to my face……!」

「In this way, it’s easier to teach you because we’re looking at the same screen, isn’t it…… it’s because Sato-san can’t focus.

「Uuu……!」

Kaaaaa, from behind, Sato-san’s face looked like it turned red like blood.

I’ll say it again to confirm, but Sato Koharu is a beautiful girl.

Because she’s already in the top five of the school, I’ve heard her figure is good for amateur modeling.

……so, when that sort of reaction came out of her, I only just became conscious of it.

From her rustling hair, something like the faint smell of shampoo, the white nape of her neck, her rough breathing……  not good.

I shake my head a little and block out my worldly desires, and concentrate on the screen of the smartphone.

Then, I teach the way of taking an attractive photo for Minsta, and at that time.

「……Oshio-kun……」

Sato-san calls my name with a delicate voice.

Maybe because of the tension, her voice became heated, and when was affected by this heat, somehow I stopped.

「……what is it?」

「This time….. this, this, however……」

For a while she took a few breaths, in order to prepare to say something—

「—um, thank you for a little bit ago…… it was really cool.」

Pikon.

Sato-san’s smartphone rang out with that idiotic sound.

After a delay, Sato-san and I each let out an 「Ah」 that overlapped, and immediately, the door to my room opened.

「Soutaaa! A dangerous group has come! Help me a little…..」

As soon as my father looked here, he froze in place.

Then, after the unpleasant, short silence, my father like a brilliant flower, with a back lat spread and the appeal of the inverted triangle on his back, left with the words, 「I’ll do my best on my own!」, strongly closed the door and quickly left. [T/N: So the “inverted triangle” in this case is not panties, but what really guys with really broad shoulders look like, as they look like an upside down triangle.]

Again there was silence, and then a late overwhelming embarrassing feeling descended.

Now that doesn’t mean it was only her, but for me as well, up to my ears my face was blushing.

「Ha, haha, a group, he says…… if I don’t go back, it might be bad.」

「T…… that’s right, it might be bad, right! Ahaha……」

Sato-san and I make distance between ourselves as if a bullet was repelled.

We were sensing each other. Already there are various boundaries.

「Th, then, then! I’ll go home! Sorry for the trouble! I’ve cause all sorts of trouble! Um, if you send my apologies to your father as well, I’ll be happy, I wonder!? After, after…… after school, would you like to meet again!?」

In order to leap up from the chair, she stood up, and then Sato-san hurriedly ran up to the door.

Then, 「—Then, I’m sorry for the bother!」 Practically as if she were shouting her goodbyes at the end, Sato-san left my room behind.

I, left behind, inevitably…… soundlessly let out a 「Ahhhhh…..」, and in that situation, fell down.

My heart was still making a thumping noise.

Surely, now, in the cafe, my father is busily running around, it seems, but…… sorry, it’s impossible.

I lean against my bed, with shaking hands, I use my shaking hands to drink from the teacup.

The black tea already cooled down.

「……until just now, Sato-san was here, huh.」

I can’t believe it, it was completely like a dream, but it seems like I saw it.

—impossible, my first love until just now was in my room, and the two of us were having a conversation.

「I didn’t say anything strange, did I……」

While thinking a little anxiously, I finish the remaining black tea.

Then, at the moment I put the emptied teacup on the table, I discovered it had fallen under the chair.

With a cover that was certainly bought from a yen store was unusually plain, with the expected decorations missing, the owner who isn’t as cold as you would expect—

「……Sato-san forgot her phone.」

I sprinted with all of my might.

For some reason I didn’t understand, I recklessly ran.

Each person who was walking down the road turned their head, suspicious of me, but that’s outside of my thoughts.

Now, there was only one truth that occupied my mind.

That was……. 「I entered the room of my first love……!」

With my face that felt hot, I’m swirling with regrets at the numerous blundered I committed today, and also because of the tension, I talked too much.

Could I have been skillfully talking, or did I say something strange, I wonder!? It was probably because I was thinking only about that sort of thing.

As for having noticed my fatal blunder, it was only after it started to get dark.

—I forgot my smartphone.

When I noticed it, while recalling my other various blunders, I was burying my head in my pillow and yelling.

Today was only one day, but I there is the feeling as if I used up all of my mistakes for a year, and in the end, even next year’s mistakes have been used up with my momentum.

……compared to that, why did I forget my smartphone at the house of the person I like……

But, there’s no use crying over spilled milk. For now, the choice is whether or nt to return for my smartphone.

This, for me, was a difficult question. Because it might already be the time the cafe is closed, visiting late would cause trouble for Oshio-kun.

Besides, above anything else, if I try to meet him again, I don’t know what extremely embarrassing thing I’ll accidentally do next time!

I was worried.

Maybe I’ll be worried until the year after the next one.

Then, around the time I’ve developed a fever that grows my intelligence, after my troubles—

「……after taking a bath, let’s go back」

I calmed down and reached that sort of conclusion.

After carefully taking a shower at 7pm, watching me put on makeup, my mother is very curiously watching me, however somehow I dodged the question.

Therefore now, I return down the roads I came from, and finally come back here.

While concealed in the lukewarm summer night, I, Sato Koharu, tightly hold my painfully beating chest.

「Uu……」

If I turn right there at the corner, I can see “cafe tutuji”, that is to say, Oshio-kun’s home.

—after all, Oshio-kun is my first love.

I can never talk to him in class, and in order to not be noticed the best I can do is watch him from a distance, but still his coolness was seared into my eyes.

His slender legs, his eyes that looked a little drowsy, soft looking hair, dimples that would come out during the times he would smile……

Then today, with him being a stylish cafe employee, moreover I discovered the new reality he was a Minstagramer!

Certainly unlike me, he was extremely popular, I wonder……

When I thought that far, I examined and then accidentally reconfirmed my miserable self, and my legs became considerably heavy.

As expected, it’s better to go home, isn’t it…… such feelings started to rise up.

But—

「……I came this far.」

I told myself that and took a deep breath. I resolved myself, and finally went around the corner.

Then, at the scene spread out in front of my eyes, suddenly my breath was taken.

「Eh……」

There’s a light turned on at “cafe tutuji”, which was expected to be closed.

It seemed like it was glittering, however the decorative warmly shining lights were faintly shining on the flower garden, filled with a fantastic beauty. It’s a child-like example, however, it’s completely like I’ve gotten lost in the world of a picture book.

「This is……」

As if it I was invited, I took one step, then one step again, and advanced into the flower garden.

Then, even if I passed through the flower arch into the center of that wondrous world, I recognized his appearance.

Holding a teacup with one hand, on one of the terrace seats, Oshio-kun was there, legs crossed.

「Oshio-kun……」

Unconsciously, I mumbled his name.

That voice reached—I don’t think it was the case, but Oshio-kun who noticed me, put down his partially finished cup of tea, and with a gentle smile— 「 Sato-san, I’ve been waiting, you know」—the moment I heard that voice, with my heart that was beating that fast, I seriously thought it had stopped.

My face becomes pale, and my next words won’t come out.

Unable to just watch that sort of me, Oshio-kun stands up, and relaxedly walks towards me.

Wait, right now is dangerous! Right now is dangerous, now is dangerous, because—!

「You forgot your smartphone, right? Here you are.」

I finally opened up my frozen throat, 「M, maybe, you’ve been waiting for me?」

「Yep, will she return to pick this up, I thought, and then I turned on the lights and waited. Something like leaving your phone at a guy’s house isn’t pleasant, right?」

「T, that!」

Buruburuburu! trembles my head.

This isn’t good, even if you try to behave smartly, in front of Oshio-kun I panic and words don’t come out…….!

Seeing that sort of me, Oshio-kun sweetly smiles, 「Is your house closeby? It hasn’t become completely dark, but be careful returning home, you know?」

Finally leaving with those words, he turns on his heel.

Ahh, Oshio-kun left—

「—Um!」

From my mouth words sprung out, regardless of my intentions.

Expressing my thanks, and for saying see you tomorrow at school.

That would be good, right, and that would be the best, beautiful ending, right?

Although I understood thoughts, my mouth conveniently—

「Then—it’s okay if I take a picture!?」

The moment those words came out of my mouth, I felt a sensation of going completely pale from my body.

What, what did you say, me!?

「Ah…… th, that’s not right! That, the cafe’s garden is very, um…… it’s because it’s beautiful! Look! It’s because I’m aiming to become a Minstagramer!? Really, it looks beautiful!?」

「……You want to take a picture of my house’s garden? That, of course, is fine, but……」

「Y…… yes! H, hooray! I’m sorry!? I’ve caused so many troubles for you, ahaha……」

What do you mean, ahaha.

I hold up the horizontally held smartphone and then unnaturally say, 「I’ll take a picture now—」, pausing.

However, the insides of my head were already in chaos.

My hand holding the smartphone, it can’t be helped that it’s trembling. It shows itself before my eyes, as what’s reflected on the screen, I can’t understand.

This is impossible for me, truly… truly impossible.

Mou, I immediately wanted to disappear.

—at that time, from behind, a hand stretched and was put on top of mine.

It’s slender and beautiful, but I understand that it certainly is a boy’s, that sort of hand.

It’s several seconds or several minutes or several hours, I think, with how much the time is stretched, he speaks with an always kind voice.

「I’ll help you.」

At that moment, he guided my finger, and tapped the button.

That is the button that changes the inside camera and outside camera.

That is to say, now, on the smartphone display I, and Oshio-kun who is placing his hand on mine, is reflected, and—pikon.

Our voices saying 「Ah」 overlap a second time, and the two-shot of us together is saved onto the smartphone.

The two of us drift into a short silence.

「……Ah, so, sorry…… I took a picture of ourselves, should we redo it?」

「N, n-no! You took a good photo! T, thank you, Oshio-kun……!」

After I watched Sato-san’s retreating figure vanish, I fell down to my knees.

「~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~!!!!」

Already, from a long time ago, there were various limits.

「Soutaa!」

Together with a beast-like roar, from the inner parts of the branches a muscular Daruma—er, rather, my father jumped out.

When my dad rushed up to me, with those big hands he patted my back while putting a towel on me.

Then for the first time I realized it, but my back had become drenched in sweat. My throat had also become parched.

I, with a trembling hand, drink from the teacup in one gulp.

「F, father……!」

「What is it, Souta!」

「I, did I say something strange……!? Or disgusting……!?」

「It’s fine! You were like a cool guy! Like an extremely handsome guy!」

I’m glad……

My father wiped my back with the towel, while from the bottom of my heart I let out a relieved sigh.

Truly, I thought my heart stopped.

AND WE ARE BACK!

Man, that was a LONG chapter, holy moly. But here we are! It’s good to be back, even if we’re mostly covering ground that was previously covered.

Either way, not too much else to say, other than it’s going to be a while. Hopefully we can hit something like a normal cadence, but yeah, these chapters are long, and on Google Docs where I keep this, the chapter hits 20 pages post-translation. My goodness.

For everyone who’s been holding out for this one, I thank you for waiting. As always, though, please make sure to go and buy the original, even if you can’t read it, to support the original author!
