02. Bullseye

Why did this happen?
The daughter of the duke, Lydia von Ernest, was indignant while stuffing her face with afternoon sweets. Usually, you would mind your manners and eat little by little but, only today she can’t care about it.
She still isn’t calm about the rude fellow from this morning. Further, the maid also couldn’t be fired. Even now while frightened they serve her black tea. The tea leaves changed depending on the day according to one’s mood, and served after the temperature was exactly right. As far as tea was concerned, out of all the maids, she was the most skilled.
Now, in the garden, during the early afternoon, on the visible terrace, Lydia is the only one having tea.
The duke, her father, is busy with work, and her mother just gave birth to her younger sister so her attention is focused there.
As for Lydia, for manners and so forth, there were several people in charge of teaching her. However, in her schedule there is some time for herself. There isn’t a need for a large number of maids.
Her afternoon is vacant. She always prepares for the next day’s lessons, reading in a room but, she once again she complains about the rude person.
So far, the servants have not made a retort, that being the case this morning she was at a loss for words, this time she was enthusiastic about surely talking down to that guy.
Then that being said, she noticed it.
That rude fellow, what house was he from, she wondered.
Because he was meeting with her father, she was certain he was a servant, but if she doesn’t know what kind of job he has, she won’t find him in this large estate.

「Hey, the rude guy from this morning, just who is he?」

When she looked at the maid a little bit and listened, the maid froze up a bit and answered.

「That boy……? He came together with Baumgartner-san, that being the case, is he an apprentice gardener, I wonder?」

With the maid’s statement, she gradually remembered there was a person in the house nearby. If she wasn’t mistaken, there was a bear-like man who was bigger than her father. He was Baumgartner, wasn’t he?
Was he a gardener, or that is to say, today would he also be in this garden, she wondered.
Extending her gaze to the other side of the terrace, cutting the shrubs exactly right was someone Baumgartner-like, as the figure of a large man was there.
With her gaze searching these surroundings, she found a small figure crouching over.
Lydia put her fork down, leaving her seat after she finished the remnants of her black tea.

「I will be taking a small walk.」

Understanding she was implicitly saying not to follow her, the maid said to take care to her back. Lydia is still very young, and will not leave the grounds of the estate without her parents. The extent of her “stroll” is the grounds of the estate.
Leaving the garden at a somewhat fast pace, she found the boy she aimed for. He didn’t realize her and next to some flowers he was crouched over, silently doing something. Little by little, slowly he shifted horizontally.
Come to think of it, the man named Baumgartner wasn’t here. Other work separated them, it seems.

「Hey, you!」

「……what’s wrong, I’m out of breath.」

With that voice the boy who lifted his head responded, out of breath, mysteriously saw a heavily breathing Lydia. He didn’t talk to her immediately as she found him, because he was catching his breath. It is expected that a daughter like Lydia could not use an unpaved road such as following the fence, and it is a considerable range from the terrace. This was the first time her own feet had walked a long distance here, as she had gone past the extent of her usual stroll where she would immediately turn back to the estate. Partially because she was hurrying, she couldn’t make a sound for a while when she found the boy.

「For what reason are you at such a faraway place!?」

「Tell it to your large garden.」

Making a complaint, his gaze returned from Lydia to his work. Naturally, a gardener apprentice would be in the garden. The “garden” of the state is just considerably large.

「Well. What are you doing over there?」

Even while dropping his gaze to his task at hand, there is the appearance he is listening to the conversation. His voice just went in her direction.

「Ah, I went out to give you an opportunity to apologize.」

「That is, because your father spoke, I was saved trouble, however, going out especially for you…… you have free time, huh?」

「Today, by chance, I do not have afternoon lessons.」

He couldn’t play the part of a person with a lot of free time and immediately replied.

「As expected of the nobility, from the time you’re a small child you’re immersed in study. Difficult, huh?」

Even though what she’s doing is just natural for the nobility, Lydia is bewildered hearing such feelings for the first time. If that’s the case, you would feel like you’re persevering and trying your best, subconsciously.

「That is right! However……」

「Ahh, sorry. I am unskilled at formal language. I am very sorry.」

When she tried to demand an apology so she wouldn’t be prominently confused, she was simply apologized to. Her words were dampened.
However, even if he apologized as it is, showing the back of his reddish-brown hair that looked like feathers, it was still rude. Thus, a central part of the apology is not there.

「You must face towards me when you apologize! Additionally, you must say the something you are apologizing for, isn’t that right!?」

「Eh, that’s unreasonable. I won’t finish the quota set by my father..」

You must finish it by the time the sun falls down, he said. From some time ago his hands doing something slightly shifted, repeating some action.

「……which reminds me, from time ago, what are you doing?」

「I’m pulling out weeds, you know. Later, I’ll be culling overgrown insect repellant herbs.」

With a second look, next to him are two baskets, which according to some rule separated each type of grasses.

「Why is there a necessity to pull even the herbs?」

The insect repellant or such mentioned some time ago, Lydia did not understand the reason for decreasing them.

「That herb is also a weed, so it multiplies quickly.」

If it was the case that a herb was a weed, Lydia didn’t know about it. To that unexpected truth, she was surprised and said nothing.
In the time she was silent, the crouching boy who was turning his back to her pulled weeds, setting them aside in their respective baskets. Lydia’s understanding was to only the extent that mint-like blades of grass exists. Perhaps there was a type of mint in the baskets, it seems? The basket of weeds hasn’t reached its capacity, but there is a considerable amount.

「……with lots of herbs like that, what do you do with them?」

Lydia had only seen a pinch of herbs, or the amount of herbs as tea leaves. The amount seen doesn’t match up to that kind of usage.

「Hmm…… firstly, we ask the kitchen if they need any, then the remnants I entrust to my mother. Maybe, tonight, we’ll use the herbs for cooking, and after drying them to use as something like tea leaves, you know?」

It seems Lydia realized he was doing this work for tonight’s meal. To Lydia, something like meals could be changed if she asked. For the making of tea leaves, she didn’t have a general understanding. The boy in front of her is so different from Lydia, that she was surprised many times over.

「……then, aside from that, properly apologize!」

The things that were just on her mind that she asked about caused her to lose sight of the conversation, however, she had not finished asking for his retraction.

「How I said your personality is ugly?」

「That is right!!」

With her apology demand, the boy’s working hands accidentally stopped, and for a moment he pondered.

「Hmm, for example, however, that because the king suddenly decided to war with the adjoining country, your father was ordered to the battlefield to fight, what would you think?」

It was an abrupt question, but using her family as an example, Lydia answered immediately.

「That kind of order is tyranny! That kind of king is a foolish king! Since, to what extent does war damage its citizens… above all else, I could not forgive such a thing like sending my father to the frontlines!」

「Exactly.」

「Yes?」

「What you said to that maid, it was something like she was terrible, yes? For ordinary people, the presence of work is life or death, even if their origins are from nobles, there is certainly a reason they turn pale.」

The maid she tried to fire and chased after her, Lydia didn’t know her. At that time, she didn’t notice because had turned on her heel and wanted to quickly leave. However, he knew the maid’s complexion, that is to say, that sort of thing.
He was able to notice in that instant the maid’s circumstances, it seems.  From a third party it seems, but the truth was he had a wider field of view at that time. Realizing her childishness, Lydia’s face was colored in shame. By all rights, it was age appropriate as a child but, as one raised in the house of a noble, it was not permissible for Lydia. Even if later she looked back on and understood, Lydia didn’t want to look back on it and hung her head.

「Do you know that maid’s name?」

「No……」

It isn’t necessary to know her name, she hadn’t memorized things like the maid’s name. She knew the face.

「Then, do you know that maid’s good points?」

「……out of all the maids I know, she’s the best at making tea.」

She knew even tastes she prefered, it seemed. However, for her, it was a delicious experience.

「If she was fired, you would become unable to drink that tea, and you’d be in trouble, right?」

「……I would be… troubled.」

That tea that was brewed as if it was ordinary would be lost, and when she thought about it she became sad.
Because she tried to do something troubling, Lydia was regretful.

「Mhm. You’re properly watching over your subordinates, aren’t you? It’s small, but it’s admirable.」

「Yes.」

Lydia unconsciously lifted her head, doubly surprised she heard a voice closer than she thought and that she was unexpectedly praised by him.
Looking up, she clashed with bronze eyes. That kind of smiling while laughing hadn’t been seen by nobles.

「Besides, that’s it, it seems. In all seriousness, I didn’t want to be fired, and then at any rate, I want to keep my lonely father company.」

「Wh!?」

Even if the next one is a better excuse, suddenly his hands in cotton gloves patted her head, making a ponpon sound.
Also more importantly, with him unconsciously hitting the bullseye, her facial temperature suddenly went up.
That, she hadn’t realized.
By saying it just like that, she realized there was nothing more.
Her father’s work, her mother being busy taking care of her sister, and her with her studies, the amount of meals where all of them were present had decreased. The times she was alone increased. There is no way that a five year old was feeling lonely although, Lydia herself, saying 「I’m a noble, so therefore」 unconsciously didn’t see she was pretending.
This morning, she wanted to have a reason to meet her father. She wanted for him to care, but with only that reason it would be no good to meet with her father, she thought. On further realizing her true feelings, it can’t be helped she was embarrassed this reality was found out by this guy before herself. Then, in what way he understood, she questioned, as the bronze eyes she stared at became firm.

「You’ve become a nice shade of red, huh?」

「Whose fault is that!?」

With something like admiration in his voice to calm her down, the hand that was patting her brushed something aside, and then he replied.

「Me, I’m only talking normally, right?」

「That kind of normal is strange! I am a noble, and you are a commoner, you know!?」

「‘You’, that’s a rude way of calling people, huh. Using a name is the right way, so I’m Isaac. You’re Dia, right?」

「That’s a nickname only family members are allowed to use! I have the splendid name my father gave me, Lydia.」

「Lydei……  it’s hard to call out…… a nickname is easier.」

「That is not allowed.」

「Ehh, then, how about ‘Ojou’?」

「You must call me properly!」

「Ojou, you’re like a teacher, huh?」 [T/N: The raw has his say ‘daughter’ in a polite form, so I got nothing. The only real alternative is ‘Lady Daughter’ which makes me have an aneurysm when I read it because it sounds so clunky, so oh well]

「Y…… I do not think Isaac is by any means older than me……」

She was somewhat worn out.
With him, the emotions going up and down accidentally became intense. From the first meeting where he did not act very noble-like,  he would usually forget gracefulness as he talked like he was with an ordinary girl. Then, with an attitude towards nobles unbefitting a commoner, while still paying attention, being appropriate with him was absurd.

「I think it’s fine for the Ojou to be more childlike.」

What was he saying? Even when he exposed his own childishness.

「To the Duke and your family, it will be good to say ‘I want you to care about me’.」

「I cannot say that!」

To a proposal of something she cannot do, she unconsciously raised her voice.
If she were to say that sort of thing, it could cause trouble. Then, they might hate her.
As for Lydia, her temper up until now could still be called noble.

「That reason it is also unreasonable is……」

It was frightening. That is, rejection.

「How? Wanting to be together with your family is enough of a reason, right?」

「Yes……」

Is that a reason?
Saying something like that?
Lydia’s eyes are calm when she simply affirms her feelings.

「That duke, especially, I think he’ll be delighted.」

Other family members she didn’t know, but they are fine, and this is the basis she approved this line of thinking.

「How……」

How was he so secure in this?
If she asked that, if she looked at herself, she could easily answer.

「Because, Ojou, if you notice it, you shouldn’t be disgusted by other people. You were raised by a good family.」

She only stopped calling him by a disagreeable name.
Perhaps it also included already reflecting on the one matter of this morning. However, concerning that matter, he was also unable to apologize.

「Besides, it’s better than badmouthing other people, right?」

「…..That isn’t it!」

As if to respond, like he understood, he laughed with a smile. Somehow, his way of seeing through things was frustrating.
All there is are unchanging bronze pupils that look back at you, even if you glare into them, it’s ineffective.
Anyhow, if it’s the case he sees through things, one more complaint is also good, isn’t it?

「At this point in time, it’s too late to apologize to that maid, it seems……」

He picked up on that brief fearful and small muttering.

「Though, compared to knowing her name, not apologizing isn’t as good, right?」

That’s right. Even though she didn’t know her name, she was trying to get her fired. By properly knowing that the other party was one person of the human race, she could properly take responsibility.  And because of that,  if she desired it, she could talk to the maid to have her leave.

「Nevertheless, immediately, Isaac should withdraw his ‘ugly character’ remark.」

Now isn’t the time. At least, not until she finished apologizing to the maid. She declared war on him, so her decision to apologize would not waver.

「Ah, that.」

Starting to say that, he loudly said things like 「Ah—」 and 「Uh—」. What on Earth was it.

「…..I have a bad mouth.」

She knew that. Currently, when talking to someone of a higher social status, he wasn’t using formal language at all.

「You say this way of talking is undesirable…… I say it’s good, you know, because the Ojou is especially cute, but she’s even more cute when she is smiling.」

Maybe because she was unused to saying it, she was worried about her positive expression, knitting her eyebrows while she assembled words.
But, it was frank words without any flattering component.
She heard those familiar words of praise, but for the first time it was like experiencing a hallucination.

「Wha……」

Blood rushed to her face.
Just how many times does she want to blush?

「Are you okay, Ojou?」

「I’m fine……」

When she was worried and extended her hand, she touched the point his hand had patted some time ago. Certainly her hair felt different.
Strangely, she thought, and then lowered her hand to in front of her eyes, and something like light brown dust was attached to her fingertip. It was dirt.
Why exactly, was there dirt in her hair?

「Ah, sorry. It was the state my gloves were in.」

No good, says the boy gardener’s apprentice whose gloves were covered all over with dirt due to working with weeds, flapping them together.
It was a fraction of a proper apology but, the truth was it was careless behavior. Then, Lydia’s boiling emotions couldn’t be contained to that point.
In order to spill out her flowing and seething emotions, Lydia raised her voice.

「Isaac!!」

In the duke’s vast garden, the hidden anger of the young lady crashed down on the gardener’s apprentice.

What a hectic day, it seems.
Due to just one boy.
However, the day isn’t over yet.

When she went back, she had to ask that maid’s name, and apologize.

After she cleaned the dirt from her hair.

Holy CRAP this one was long and definitely made my brain spin. Damn, dude. 9 friggin pages I want to die lmao

Not too much to say for this chapter, other than my choice to leave “Ojou” as it is. It gets really bad later on if I had left it as “Lady Daughter” because lmao holy crap it’s so clunky. I could have just used “she” or something like that, but I wanted to at least convey the use of some kind of politeness or title.

But other than that, that’s another chapter in the 3 week timeframe that I’m trying to commit to for this novel. Man, these chapters are rough. Either way, see you guys next time! Let me know if there’s any egregious errors I need to fix!

22nd Piece — MINE

This chapter had the most aneurysm inducing sentence yet. I have included a screenshot of what pain looks like at the end for those curious.

Also coming in early, as I have some stuff to take care of in the evening, so enjoy the early update!

Saying one thing or another, finally I arrived at home a little past eight o’clock.

I concealed my mood with my 「I’m home」 voice, and opened the front door entrance.
From the living room, I feel the hint of a person there. Only the sound of the television can be heard.
It’s my mother, who certainly is always lying down on the sofa, gazing at the TV, it seems.

I start to take off the heels I bought at “hidamari”, while humming which is something I usually don’t do.
Here, it was a little regrettable to take them off when I thought of Oshio-kun’s compliment, but…… yes, it’s important to take care of them for a crucial moment.

I think that kind of thing while grinning—from the darkness of the inner part of the hallway, with brown dyed hair in a bob cut, the wrinkled face of a woman popped out.
Maa, simply put, this is my mother.
However, it was extremely abrupt that I let out a 「Dooou!?」, screaming improperly like a usual female high school student would.

「(……Koharu, Koharu!)」 [T/N: She’s whispering.]

「W, whwhwh, what is it, mother!? Ahhh, you surprised me……!」

「(How, you just left for a recent phone call!)」

「Phone call……? ……Ah!」

So finally, I remember the reason I left “hidamari”, was a call from my mother.
At that time, there were so many various things that happened, that I forgot to call her back, however……

「I’m sorry, it was crowded, was it something important? ……Or rather, why the whispered voice?」

「(……Ah, who do you honestly take after, it’s embarrassing or rather the point is it’s bad, or more precisely…..)」

「?」

「In any case, it’s because you can’t follow-up, isn’t it?」

「……??」

What is mother saying? Completely unable to understand, I tilt my head to the side a little—suddenly, I notice a certain thing.

Huh…..?
Come to think of it, right now my mother arrived from the hallway, but, then what about the presence I felt of the person from the living room?
In addition, if you try to listen carefully, what the television is playing—it’s a news program.
Mother likes variety shows, to watch the news at this prime-time television hour, was unlikely.
No way—

At almost the same time I was in the middle of my thoughts, the living room door opened.
Then, appearing from the other side of the door, with a sharp glint in the eye, at that time, I of course, and even my mother, certainly felt like our spines froze up.

「—welcome home, Koharu, it’s late, isn’t it?」

「F, father……?」

My father, Kitou Kazuharu’s figure was there.
Moreover, it’s especially dreadful, it’s not offset.

His hair is blacker than black, in a 7 to 3 ratio. [T/N: Yes the 「7:3」 hair ratio is a thing, if you want to look it up.]
Without one wrinkle in his shirt, and with a tightly fastened blue necktie.
However one way or another, even if things appear like this, from the sharp glasses frames, wrinkles of nervousness are sticking out.
It was my father’s perfect job mode.

Then, always after returning home my father would take a shower, even now he is continuing to be in job mode meaning…… it’s decided.
—It’s time to scold me.

「To, today, you’re early, you know…… did you not have overtime……?」

Haha, I tried such a thing like changing the subject while giving an insincere smile, but, father’s sour look was the same as ever……

「I am asking why you are returning home so late, in addition, why are you wearing casual clothing, and what happened to your uniform.」

Being pressed by each detachedly asked question, drop by drop, an unpleasant sweat was forming on the back of my neck.
If I know it’s my parents, it’s more frightening than a teacher.

Being subordinate to father, every day I bear something like this, it seems……

「Today,」

I forcibly open my dry and parched throat to answer.

「Today, I went with my cousin Rinka-chan after-school to buy clothes…… because I liked them, I immediately changed into them…… haha.」

「With two girls of your age, until such a time, moreover if my memory serves me correct, Rinka-chan is a third year middle-school student, and yet.」

「Y, yes…… you have a good memory.」

I wasn’t able to meet father’s gaze.
In front of my father, even though until now I haven’t done anything in particular, even if in my head I understand that,  in the end my body won’t do what it’s told.
In that manner, dropping my gaze downward and my mouth, father……

「—Come.」

Saying that, I was guided into the living room.
Walking heavily, I obeyed.

At that time, from the news program on the TV came 「One after another with the SNS scandals, moral panic!」, with Minstagram taken up under that theme.
I hear a student of a certain major family restaurant company, during their job, uploaded an extremely inappropriate and rash picture onto Minsta, and with that as the cause, various people got angry.

Father looks at that,

「A stray dog is much better in this case.」

and said that.
That, that cold manner of speaking, caused me to unconsciously shiver.

「Koharu, any time now you’ll be at a good age, so I’m going to teach you. First of all, do you understand why people get an education?」

At the abrupt question, I shiver while answering,

「To get into a good college……?」

「That’s wrong, if people did not receive an adequate education, they can’t mature.」

Saying that, father sat down on the sofa.

「Humans, after all, are animals. Always tempted by desires, always following the comfortable ways, so in the beginning adults with good sense should take the lead, receiving an education is necessary. Freedom or independence, that sort of thing, is only because humans completed it—the boy the TV picked up today, he’s a prime example, it seems, the consequence of a dog who didn’t finish sufficient training. The result is a stray dog that will bite at anyone, and I have to say that his parents neglected their duties as parents.」

Saying that, father sighed deeply……

「……after that, that boy will be discharged from work, and his family will talk about it behind it back, it seems. The family who hired him will also have trust in them questioned, and videos on the net are permanent…… only one animal, an unacceptably undisciplined stray dog will disappear, but countless people will be troubled…… that’s what I wanted to say, do you understand?」 [T/N: Low key sounds like this dude was a whistleblower or something lol]

In the middle of feeling like I was choking from the sense of urgency, I am at a loss for words, and father clearly declared.

「—Koharu, you aren’t an adult yet, so at least, don’t try to imitate taking the lead.」

※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※

「Haaaa~~~~……」

My deep…… very deep sigh, echoed in the narrow bathroom.
That high tension is now the lowest.

「I’m really tired……」

I sink little by little into the bathtub.
Mentally and physically, I’m exhausted.

In the end, father’s sermon continued for an hour.
Something grandiose for arriving home a little late……I had a small kind of rebellious thought in the corner of my head for the first ten minutes.
The remaining fifty minutes, it was only getting smaller.

After all, father’s words were absolutely the truth.
Even though I don’t have a curfew, returning home late was my mistake.
But, in addition……

「It would be good if he could say it more gently……」

Father was too cold.
Calling him a dog to his daughter! He wasn’t a person!
That way of speaking can be poetic, I understand that, but, it was too frightening that I honestly was on the brink of tears, so please think about how to say it……

「I want for you to emulate Oshio-kun, you know, honestly……」

If it’s him, he’ll almost certainly not hurt my dainty heart, instead he would gently admonish me.
……with that kind of thought, realizing I naturally monologued about comparisons to Oshio-kun, I blushed.

Uu…… for me, these days, at all times, 「Oshio-kun this, Oshio-kun that」, it’s rather disagreeable, isn’t it!?
Ahh, geez……! If this kind of situation continues, before long I won’t be able to live without Oshio-kun!
Occasionally, I’ll forget about Oshio-kun, and think of something else!
Alright! Let’s do it! [T/N: If Sato’s case of Oshio Fever is this bad, I worry for Rinka.]

I nod to myself, saying 「Yes, yes」, as I go surfing on the net, picking up the waterproofed smartphone next to the bathtub……

……yet, I feel.

…………I can assuredly say that I feel.

「……I want Oshio-kun to comfort me.」

Those kinds of words are what came out of my mouth, and I sank my head into the bathtub.
Geez, already I’ve become a person who can’t live without Oshio-kun, I can’t, I can’t.

While I was admonishing myself, the MINE app opened.
Then, opening Oshio-kun’s chat room, that day I sent it,

「After school, would you like to go together to drink tapioca milk tea?」

with that sentence, a shy Pommerarian stamp was displayed. [T/N: If you aren’t familiar with LINE, you can send preset images called stamps/stickers (I’ve seen both terms be used), usually meant to express something.]
Ultimately, from then, I haven’t used MINE to send anything to Oshio-kun……

「What should I send……!」

I stared at the talk room, but my heart started to beat fast, going bakubakubaku.
Everyone, when it’s time to send a MINE to your friends, what do you say……!?
Because, at any rate, I only send MINE to Rinka-chan or my mother……!

Is “Good evening” safe?
Isn’t that a little too polite?

“Thanks, Oshio-kun!”
……Ha, sending an abrupt MINE in advance, it feels a little too shameless, and wouldn’t it be misjudging the sense of distance between us?

Once more.
Something like “Oshio-kun, the date this time was fun, right”……

「Date!!」

Once again, I sank my head into the bathtub. Something noisy is the best.

……or perhaps I should say, the first sentence had been decided!
“Oshio-kun, thank you for today with Rinka-chan, sorry for the trouble”
Receiving comfort is presumptuous! First of all, I should be giving my thanks, right!?

While spitting out foam from bubbles in the bathtub, I’m thinking about that sort of thing—somehow, father’s recent sermon crossed my mind.

「At the very least, don’t try to imitate taking the lead.」

I lifted my face from the bathtub and laughed self-deprecatingly.

「That sort of, it’s not especially like I’m confessing from here……」

While my laughter changes into something dry, I turn back to the smartphone’s display.

「……huh?」

It’s a certain uncomfortable feeling.
—it’s an embarrassing story, but up until now several times, like this time, I would try to send Oshio-kun a MINE, but on countless occasions wouldn’t have the courage to send it, and with that being the case, my eyes were drawn to Oshio-kun’s chat room.
So, I noticed an unusual event.

Underneath the Pommeranian stamp.
There, a short message to “Sato-san”.

「Eh, a message from Oshio-kun……」

Rather than understanding the situation, my smartphone’s pokon notification sound rang out, so

「—」

I see the newly sent message, and then I, honestly, I think my heart stopped.
No, I don’t think it stopped, it did stop, this time honestly, it stopped.
After all, Oshio-kun’s sent message—

“I like Sato-san.”

So when I did my usual scroll through of this chapter, I blazed through it because I saw that last line and knew I had to know all the events leading up to it. Here we goooooo!

(Above: Sato’s father’s monologue) Also I have never felt so much pain in my brain. You have no idea how heartbreaking it was to just see that as I scrolled through lmao. But in hindsight it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.

Either way, not a lot to say about this chapter! But, I realized that we’ve actually reached just over the point I’ve made it 6 months without missing a bi-weekly update. Whew, it’s been a wild ride, huh? Doing pretty well in my Japanese classes as well, as I’ve moved onto Genki II, and doing his has definitely opened my eyes up to a lot of vocab and whatnot.

Look forward to next chapter though! See you guys then!

01. Meeting

It’s been about seven years since I was born as Isaac Baumgartner.
From when I was born, I have memories of my past life. But, it did not increase my mental age, I only reached a stage where I recognized they were from my past life as I became more aware of it. Realizing it didn’t change anything about my livelihood, I didn’t tell anyone.
However, on that day, I came for the start of my gardener apprenticeship at the house of Duke Ernest.
After this, I entered the middle of duke’s house, making my introductory appearance to the duke as my father brought me along.
The duke seems busy, as a little time before leaving, he’ll greet us at the wide entrance of something like an entrance hall. Is that kind of glancing look okay?, I think, but it seems like there is a security rule where people who will regularly visiting must have an audience with the duke.
If that’s the case, I must immediately not forget that.
There’s no way you can memorize all of the faces of this spacious estate.

「Oya, you have a very cute son.」

Me, cute? Ah, I’m small? Well, I’m seven years old.
I understood with one glance that the lord with thick blonde hair descending from the stairs was the duke.
Not slowly, but more “relaxed” with his walk, he produced an atmosphere of nobility. This could be called elegant movement.
Then, even if you carry a rose on your back, it’s a beautiful form that doesn’t make you uncomfortable. [T/N: I tried to look to see if this was some kind of metaphorical speech but I couldn’t find anything.]

「Good morning to you, Gerald-sama. Thank you very much for the time today. He is my son, but he is here to be my apprentice, so please say hello.」

When the duke stopped his eyesight on me and took one step towards us, my father bowed his head and introduced me.
Or rather, is this how my untalkative father could talk? Moreover, this is the first time I heard him use formal language.
I’m dumbstruck and stare at my father.
My father looked at me with a sideways gaze as he faced the duke as if scolding me. Ah, yes. A prompt greeting is good, right.
I hurry and then straighten out my back, then turn to face the duke, bowing.

「I am Isaac Baumgartner. I look forward to working with you.」

「I am Gerald. Please treat me well.」

He naturally puts his hand out.

Eh. A handshake?
I don’t understand, is this alright with the social status??

Given that when I fleetingly look at my father, he’s not especially glaring, I timidly decide it’s okay and grasp the presented hand.

「Surprisingly young. How old are you?」

「I am seven years old.」

Because gardening work needs endurance, to some extent it’s natural to become an apprentice from when the body is the age of being to do work. Even ten years old is premature, it seems. The duke seems to think of it as natural.

「He’s clever, isn’t he? Dennis, I’m looking forward to his future.」

「He’s just an impertinent brat……」

In contrast to the smiling duke, my father has a grimace on.

「He’s two years older than my daughter, right? At the peak of wanting to play, it seems.」

「No, I want to be able to protect the duke’s garden as soon as possible.」

My mouth said it based on the prince’s standards, but my eyes are making it clear I want to quickly become like my father. My father who manages the garden almost by himself is incredible. The gardener colleagues also are acknowledging it, and from them the apprentice applications are endless. Maa, because he’s also strict to me or to other people, the guys who give up are also endless……
Resigned to strictness, I quickly begged my father to make me an apprentice. It took about a year until he reluctantly grumbled and made me an apprentice.
Looking at the matured me who admired his father, the duke with dazzling strength narrowed his eyes.

「That’s good, isn’t it? I also want a son, you know.」

He said that with an incredibly and dazzling smile. From my direction, I want to narrow my eyes. Or rather, I want to shut them.
Father as it is has a quiet and simple expression. I want to separate our hands which have been slowly continuing to shake.
This, maybe he likes doing this, isn’t that right?
The reason is that in something like a company interview, first impressions are important. Because if your ability to show respect is weak, your employer will be displeased.

「Father!」

An exceedingly loud voice descended. While finally separating our hands, the duke turned in the direction of the voice. From the staircase visible on the opposite side of the duke, a girl wearing a bright red dress trots down the stairs. It’s like a young bird coming across its parent bird, huh?
Ah, her face is a bit red. Is she angry? Her whole body is red, it seems. The only thing that is kind to the eyes is that thin golden hair which might be inherited from her father. Or was that hair color inherited from her mother?

「Oh, did you come to see me off, my little angel?」

Spreading both of his hands, the duke reacts to his vigorously charging daughter. This is the first time I’ve seen someone say those words with a straight face. The nobility is amazing.

The daughter stopped a short distance away and sternly looked up at her father.

「Father, please listen to me! It’s terrible!」

「Oya, what’s wrong this morning?」

It seems the girl blowing her top only wants to say what she has in mind, and she started to scream through what the duke said. And yet the heart of the duke is quite big. [T/N: This one is kind of clunky but I think he means to say he’s got a good heart.]

「The maid is terrible! She gave me this terrible hair style, and furthermore, many times the brush hung onto it and then it was painful!」

The hair on both sides is lightly twisted, then at the back a cameo hair clasp is fastened. Maybe it’s fluffy, soft hair, but above the fastened portion it doesn’t expand like it was combed carefully, it seems. It’s because children’s hair is thin, hm.
I think with the A-line, it’s a good silhouette. I don’t often understand such things as noble elegance. [T/N: ‘A-Line’ is a fashion term if you want to look into it.]

「I see, it’s because your dear hair is dainty. It was painful, it seems.」

In order to sympathize with her, he stroked her face. However, only being sympathized by her father with the same hair is not enough to satisfy her, it seems.

「That rude maid, please fire her!」

I think she caught her busy father before leaving for work because she wanted to say this. From the time of the long and drawn out handshake with me, slightly to the right and behind them, the butler (temporary) who had been putting out an aura was weakening. Probably, because he was not making any facial expressions.
The maid who had been chasing after her and arrived turned more pale than the butler and froze up.
She had done the daughter’s hair, it seems.
Or rather,

「You, your personality is unbelievably ugly.」

Before the duke reacted, my thoughts spilled out.
Everyone then and there freezes.
Especially the daughter of the duke, who until now no one would have called her ugly, has her eyes widened.

That was a mistake!!

That stiffness was solved by my father’s unforgiving fist.

「……!?」 [T/N: Honestly the raw just has the character for “i” so what am I supposed to put lmao]

In excessive pain, I lost my words. I clutched the punched area with both hands and crouched.

「Apologize.」

He frankly and mercilessly scolds me. At once, my father’s intimidating air is saying. Although, I’m in too much pain that I can’t talk.
Also, it’s generally disagreeable. I’m not in the wrong. After all, this person is an incessant complainer, isn’t she?
Hiring into the duke’s family should be a high hurdle. Among other things such as simply being fired. Replacing lacked personnel and retirement or resignation proceedings, new personnel background checks, they take time, effort, and money that I couldn’t understand.
Still without words, through teary eyes I looked at the smaller girl. I received her dissatisfied gaze, she seemed to have understood the person who said that was me. My cheek was bloody and my eyebrow was raised.

「Just, now, what did you say……!?」

「You’ll have an ugly face when you’re an adult, with an ugly personality from the time you were small.」

「Wh……!? Who do you think I am!!」

Ah, these words are often what small villains say.

「The duke’s daughter.」

「That’s right! Do you think it’s okay for the likes of a commoner like you to say something like that to a person of the house of Duke Ernest!?」

Precisely because the nobility receive gifted educations, younger people don’t often talk a lot. I admire the girl trembling all over in a strange place.

「Is your father great?」

「Obviously!」

「Are you great?」

「That’s right.」

「So, you are great?」

「That is what I am saying!!」

「How?」

「Eh.」

「I also understand the duke is great. He is my employer and is busy with work, so he is responsible for that, it seems. But, what makes you great?」

「I, I am of the House of Duke Ernest……」

「Is the person who relies on their father to fire one maid, really great?」

「……」

If I ask with more words, the force behind them will be lost, and right after the retorted words are received I am glared at silently.
The gaze of the girl motionlessly stared back at me, and I waited for a response. Thereupon, the girl lifted her right hand. [T/N: Girl is translated literally as “other party” or “companion”, which doesn’t make as much sense, so I took a liberty there.]

Pechin.

She struck my left cheek, but it doesn’t hurt. It seems that because she is not experienced in violence, she doesn’t have that kind of physical strength. When my gaze that was hit and then turned away returns to her, she becomes vigilant of a counterattack and with a jump becomes frightened.

「Resorting to violence is like recognizing your defeat.」

「!!」

It’s not particularly defeating, but in this case she couldn’t answer my question, which is equal to her recognizing she isn’t great, it seems.
She understands that, but with that reminder, her face turns bright red and she turns away, escaping.
After I talked down to a small child, I realized my father’s fist hadn’t come again. Curiously, I thought about it and when I looked up, my father who had a fist prepared was stopped by the duke who raised one hand. The duke who had been watching our argument to the end showed a forced smile on his face.

「Thank you, Isaac.」

「No…… your dau…… I humbly apologize for saying whatever I wished to your gracious daughter.」 [T/N: Damn you humble tense, it’s hard to convey in English without inserting extra words, as “gracious” is not part of the raw.]

「Rather, you saved me. At every opportunity I also gave her warnings, but my scoldings aren’t frightening, right?」

The duke shrugged his shoulder as if he was troubled. Yes, I can easily imagine it. He’s very sweet to his daughter.

「However, asking a question in return is good, isn’t it? I’ll have to try that.」

I’ll use it as a reference, said the duke as he smiled. Yes, I didn’t raise my voice for the reasoning, I just normally asked a question back. His daughter’s selfishness was just self destructive. In my past life, my sister was occasionally annoying, and this method of doing things would stop it.

「……Gerald-sama, any time now.」

The butler was growing impatient and seeming hurried. The duke brightly smiles.

「Ah, sorry. Well then, I’m going. That’s right, Isaac. Just one thing.」

「Yes?」

The duke who steps forward on his departure, suddenly looks over his shoulder.

「My Dia is like a cute angel. Of course, she’s an angel on the inside, too.」

With a snappy wink, he gives me a warning.

「Ah, yes……」

It seems that repercussions are expressed in the courtesy of the over doting parent. For now, I must make corrections, as an apology.
The duke back could be seen, and from next to me what sounded like an angry sigh could be heard.
Feeling nervous, I fearfully looked up in my father’s direction, pressure in his eyes as he looked down on me.

「I am sorry.」

The duke stopped him from speaking with his fists the second time around, but even so in the silent pressure, in fear and reflex, I apologized.
And yet, from when the pressure stopped, I think about it and add words.

「As for Lady Dia? Next meeting, apologize to her.」

At last out of his gaze, I deeply sigh with relief.

But, with such things as being a gardener’s apprentice, would there be a “next”?

Whew! This chapter was pretty short and sweet, but man some of these translations made me want to curl up and drink. I had to take the occasional liberty for when something sounded really clunky. For example, instead of 「Of course, she’s an angel on the inside, too」, that line literally reads 「Of course, her insides are too」, which yeahhhhhhh nah. For those who also read my other translation project, my style is usually to try to keep as close as to what the raw text translates to, while keeping it as (correct) English. I try to take as few liberties as possible, only taking them when I’m 100% stuck or if it’s some really, really weird cultural note that wouldn’t translate well. Anyways, another annoying thing was that the kanji for “duke” can also be read as prince, which brings me to my next point.

Just want to give my thanks to Hisaku Scans, since it did help not having to decide what to name anyone, haha. I’ve used the names they used in their manga translations for consistency, as I found this from the manga. Also, as they used Duke, that’s what I rolled with.

Don’t expect that every chapter’s going to come out early, but I was pretty happy how this one turned out, and I’m ahead on Sato-san, so why not toss this up, no need to keep it waiting. Thanks for reading, and make sure if you can, to support the original author!

If there’s any really egregious mistakes, don’t hesitate to let me know as well! See you all next time!

21st Piece — Moonlight

Oh hey we’re finally back to an Oshio chapter.

And it’s rather lengthy orz. Good for you guys, was hell for me as this chapter never seems to end.

Also this chapter is almost not brought to you by Atelier Ryza 2. I cannot stop playing this game and it has made regret the fact Mondays exist because I had to put the game down to work. Which is why this went up a little early so I don’t forget to post it later today, haha. That alchemy system is way too addicting. But, here we go!

「—actually, you know, Oshio-kun can’t leave immediately.」

Netsu-san recommends that, as I sit down and wait in the back room of the store, hearing that kind of voice from the table.

「Eh, wh, what are you saying!? Could it be that Oshio-kun got injured……!?」

「That’s…」

As for this, with Sato-san, Sato-san’s cousin Sudou Rinka (as I learned from Netsu-san) raises her voice.
I hear the voice of two uneasy people, only I happen to start feeling nervous.
However, Netsu-san, in order to cover for me, mixes in a calming laugh while talking.

「Fufu, you’re wrong, you’re wrong, just some time ago when jumping in, his clothes got a bit torn up, and now I am sewing them together, so it will take some time.」

「Ah, is that so……?」

「……」

Netsu-san also uses her gentle voice and sleekly lies about the reason to such an extent that I unconsciously almost raise my voice in admiration, but I quickly close my mouth.
Sato-san’s sigh of relief could be heard.
On the other hand, when Rinka-chan looked at my arm with all sorts of sympathies and remained silent… it’s sinking in, isn’t it?

She’s only a middle school student, but is very adult like.
Treating her like a child and stroking her hair was a bit impolite, I wonder…… only now does that cross my mind.

「That being the case, though, you should go home, as it is becoming very dark.」

「Eh, if that’s the case, I will wait for the sewing time to be over, though……」 [T/N: Literally “will wait for the time to sew”]

「If you want to see Oshio-kun’s underwear to that extent, shall we go to the back room together?」

「Rinka-chan, let’s go home! I’ll send us home!」

「……can you tell Oshio-kun that we’re sorry for going on ahead?」

「Yes, I’ll look forward to the next time you visit the store~」

Along with a panicked Sato-san’s voice, subdued Rinka-chan’s voice, and lastly a farewell could be heard, when a door closing made a loud sound. [T/N: “farewell” was literally “exit greeting”]
The inside of the store fell completely silent.

From there, all of a sudden, only a cream-colored head appeared from the crack in the back room door,

「They went, you know.」

and smiled.

I finally breathed a sigh of relief and stared at my right arm that had rubbed against the asphalt.
Some time ago, I used water to wash the wound while desperately muffling my voice, which was worth it, more or less, but in the running blood, small black pieces of gravel are mixed in.
It was good to keep it away so as to not have her become aware of it. [T/N: literally “not to become aware of it”, but I added a bit for extra clarity.]

「My, my, that’s a gaudy injury, does it hurt?」

「The pain isn’t at my upper limit, but I’m not good with this……」

I can also assuredly say it about my arm, among other things like blood and wounds, are in a grotesque group that even from my older days I’m not good with.
Only by seeing it, I get dizzy……

「Then first of all, disinfectant, please wait a moment.」

「……Netsu-san, for anything and everything, thank you very much.」

「It’s fine, rather it’s better that I thank you, leaping out for the sake of Rinka-chan, fufu, that was good-looking, you know?」

「I, is that so……」

Netsu-san is a beautiful woman to the extent your eyes widen just a bit.
There’s a clear difference from a senior high school student, and she feels like an “adult woman”.
I get a little flustered because that sort of woman is saying something so direct.

On the other hand, Netsu-san isn’t noticing, and with her experienced hands she takes out the first aid kit, and with cotton tweezers applies antiseptic.
She’s an adult, huh…

「My childhood friend, because they were always getting injured I became experienced, right, put your arm out.」

「I’m saved……」

The antiseptic soaks in, and unconsciously a miserable voice comes out.
……honestly, I’m saved that Sato-san was sent home.
As I keenly thought on that, at that time.

「—Oshio-kun, do you like Sato-san?」

「Eh!? How do you know that!?」

My surprise and distress in my heart jumped two levels.
That kind of reaction was amusing to Netsu-san, who giggled while saying,

「If you look at it, you can see it, but maybe Koharu-chan is the only one who doesn’t realize.」

「I, is that so……?」

If I was shy about it it would be good, and if I was in pain about it it would be good.
……no, as expected, I was overwhelmingly embarrassed.
For it to be so unconcealed, my feelings are…

「Koharu-chan, you see, is a natural airhead.」

「I understand that, although… haa, on the other hand, it’s regrettable.」

「Regrettable?」

「After all, she’s not aware of me to that extent, right? If that’s the case that other people also notice me, she won’t.」

「……」

I didn’t want to see the wound on my arm, so I closed my eyes and bared with it, but suddenly the systematic taps of the cotton tweezers stopped.
Curiously, I opened my eyes to examine it, and Netsu-san was staring at me, completely paused, her movements coming to a stop.

「……? How is it?」

「……as for this, it’s an unexpectedly heavy loss to aim for possibly, isn’t it, Rinka-chan…….」

「Yes?」

「No, look, as expected, helping the disadvantaged is human, right?」

「Eh?」

「Or perhaps I should say, that it will be a little bit bad for you.」

「What kind of thing are you saying?」

Ponponponpon, with fierce speed, to the top of my arm the cotton jumped.
That’s, it hurts, it hurts, it hurts, it hurts!? Netsu-san!?

「Oshio-kun, what do you think of Rinka-chan?」

「Haa!? What kind of thing are you—ow ow ow!」

「Is she cute or is she not cute, what do you say?」

「Gaa, gii……! Cu, I think she’s cute, you know……!? S, so a little…..!」

My feelings asking her to stop were put forward and I writhed in pain, but there was no sign of stopping.
On the contrary, the cotton was even speeding up, and I could see the afterimage of the bounce.
By now, it wasn’t ponponponpon, it was popopopopopo I was feeling.

And then, somehow Netsu-san’s eyes were shining while, once again……

「And, and? In what kind of way do you think she’s cute?」

「Ga……!」

With that uncertain question, the absorbent cotton continued to bounce.
Come on, I don’t get it, what kind of situation this is.
However as it is, being silent and with no signs of being released, in pain, from in my numb head, somehow I dig up a memory of the girl’s appearance.

Sudou Rinka.
Her appearance, her first impression is—

「—ha, her hair! Her hair is cute!」

With my scream that was like a shriek, then at last Netsu-san’s hand stopped.
With a thorough silence, suddenly I broke out in unpleasant sweat, and my breathing was heavy.
I, I’m saved……?

「……Yes, that’s all, after that is wrapping bandages, and you’ll be fine.」

The fierce attack until just now was hard to believe, as Netsu-san smiled like someone who had reached enlightenment.
……it seems I’ve been saved.
I was like a balloon deflating as I let out an extra-large sigh.

Then, what was Netsu-san thinking, as both of her hands brought her cream-colored hair together, making a ponytail……

「How is it?」

She asked with an impish look.

……how is it, she said.
It’s the same ponytail but, I’m a little impressed that Netu-san still has this much of an adult-like impression.

「As expected, it’s not the same as Rinka-chan?」

「No, even if you say that it doesn’t mean that, however, it’s because each person has their own hairstyle that suits them, you know……」

「I seeee… so it doesn’t suit me, huuuh.」 [T/N: The raw inserts extra hiragana to indicate Netsu-san is stretching the words, I tried to reflect that as best I could.]

Saying that, Netu-san surprisingly undoes the ponytail with ease, and starts winding the bandages around my arm.
……???
I really don’t understand the thoughts of an adult.

At that time, suddenly the door of “hidamari” vigorously opened.

「—yappie Mayo! It’s already eight! It’s closing time, it’s closing time! I’m drinking at home! Today is the red wine feast!」

My tension was high, as I could hear a familiar voice.
I see it, there was, somehow, the big smile of Misono Shizuku.

「Hm? Shizuku-san? What are you doing?」

「……Hm? Hmmm? Who do you think it is, what are you doing saying such things, or rather are you not going back yet? Ren already went back, you know? Or perhaps I should say he withdrew to “MOON”’s second floor, but, then, what’s with those bandages?」

The turbulent questions pressed further, becoming overwhelming.

Shizuku-san, she’s the type to multiply the number of words when she gets excited, it seems……?

「Ah, as expected, Oshio-kun and Shizuku are acquaintances.」

「Ehhh, you knew that?」

「After all, that complete set of clothes was gathered at “MOON”, right? It’s something that if you see it, you’ll know.」

Something you know……?
This is the first time I’ve discovered it, but where my clothes came from leaking out, for some reason is embarrassing……

「A close friend of the sister……」

「Yep! Soota-kun is a close friend of the sister of Misono Shizukuuuu! Then, going forward, I’m in your care, yappie!」 [T/N: Yes, this is intentional, It should be “Sota”, but Shizuku has a — after the character for “so”, so she’s stretching it out by one more syllable.]

「I’m in your care, yappie.」

Towards the eccentric high tension of Shizuku-san, Netsu-san returned a Buddha-like smile.
Eh, what? Is that greeting popular?
No, that’s wrong, it’s just the ordinary greeting of these two……

「Are you two acquaintances?」

「We aren’t acquaintances, you know, Soota-kun! We’re childhood friends from elementary school!」

「Also in college we joined the same sweets investigation circle, and the store is next door with the closing times the same, so I often when work is done, I go to 「MOON」 to drink.」 [T/N: That “sweets investigation circle” didn’t go unnoticed, I see you.]

……Sweets research circle?
Somehow, recently I remember that I heard something resembling that name? Is it just my imagination……?

While I was thinking, Shizuku-san who was moving completely like it was a musical, firmly placed an arm on my shoulder.

「Maaa, Soota-kun is lucky, right? A drinking party with two beautiful ladies! You should be glad!」

「……Eh? A drinking party, what are you saying…… how should I say it, I’m underage.」

「Refusing an invitation from a girl isn’t stylish at all! Cola or cider, anything is fine to drink! Now, let’s go, until the moon is on the other side!」 [T/N: I assume this means until sunrise.]

「Is that really lucky, Shizuku-san!? ……Maaa, Netsu-san, help……!」

「I’ll go when the shop’s work is finished, so go and drink first~」

「Wha!?」

「Hey, handsome guy, walk briskly now~~! Love talk, you know, it’s love talk~~~! Talking about old clothes is fine too!」

I reproachfully glared at Mayo-san who was waving with a fluttering hand, as any indication of being helped was absolutely nonexistent.

Ultimately, I was forcibly moved towards “MOON”.

In the sky, a beautiful full moon was rising.

※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※

「Now then……」

With everyone gone from “hidamari”, Mayo-san let out a 「fuu」, sighing.
Then—

「—Will Rinka-chan also come to the drinking party?」

I, hidden in a line of clothing—pikun!—went my shoulders as they sprang up.
「Kusukusu」, Mayo-san’s laughter could be heard.

……that person, when on Earth did she realize?
No, maybe that person, from the beginning realized it, it seems……

I really clear my throat.
As best as I can, I pretend to be calm and stand up, and to Mayo-san who is watching, respond.

「I, I won’t go, you know, I came back because I thought it was a good idea to properly say my thanks again, so, I’m going home.」

「How unfortunate, Oshio-kun is also coming.」

「Th…… that’s not relevant, it’s not!」

「Heeeeeeh.」

Mayo-san says, meaningfully.
My shoulders shook slightly, however, at any rate immediately I turned on my heel and left the store.

「Asking about MINE should be good.」

「I, I don’t have any interest in it!」

「Is that so? Before going to bed in the evening, sending a casual message when you feel lonely, that much is fun, you know.」

「…………I don’t have any interest.」

「Rinka-chan, a ponytail suits you.」

That was my limit.
I stamped my feet, and looking over my shoulder to Mayo-san, cried out. [T/N: There’s one line missing here that I omitted because it translates into “I am!” and it doesn’t flow well in English.]

「—I will never like someone such as Oshio-san!!」

Receiving that, Mayo-san unintentionally laughed.

「—Rinka-chan, do you like Oshio-kun?」

「~~~~~~~!!!! I am very sorry to have bothered you!!」 [T/N: Formal tense was used here.]

I strongly opened the door to “hidamari” in a grandiose way and left.
Really, really, really!! Everyone! Everyone!!

My hot face, it’s because recently it’s been humid!
My shaking body, it’s only because being almost hit by a car is scary!
My heart that’s throbbing…… it’s because today I was running!!

I decided, I decided!
Even though I understand he likes Koharu, yet, being happy to be called cute—absolutely I’m not!

「Everyone, don’t make light of me!」

I, lost in my thoughts, run down the path illuminated by moonlight.

Geez, this was a long chapter. When properly formatted I think this is longer than Chapter 11, which so far was the longest chapter I translated. I need a freaking drink, man.

Also hey this is totally unfair, Sato doesn’t have any allies. It’s okay though, I believe in our boy, he will not be swayed. I thought this was about to be a set up for Rinka to meet Ren but I guess not. Poor Rinka, though.

It also came to mind while translating but

Smile – Shizuku
Sweet – Koharu
Sister – Mayo
Sadistic – Rinka
Surprise – Oshio’s Mother, Muscle Lord

I’m a terrible person.

As always, see you next time!

Update Schedule

Hey everyone!

So, no doubt you’ve all noticed the flurry of activity today and potentially seen the changes on my All Translations page. Just wanted to get ahead of the curve here and let everyone know what’s up.

First off, for everyone here who came for Aren’t You Too Sweet, Salt-God Sato-san?, do not worry! I will not be delaying the chapter release schedule to accommodate everything else. That will remain bi-weekly, and if I can improve on my Japanese, maybe by September we can hit weekly releases.

For anyone who was looking forward to someone picking up She Was Both Called God, as Well as Satan, I am currently reading it in order familiarize myself with the previous translator’s style/name choices and to understand where the story is going. Predicting monthly updates on that one just because it seems a lot more involved, I’m going to have to really try to translate a chapter to see what the effort level is. From what I saw, they were pretty lengthy, though.

Lastly, today I started up with I’m Not Even An Otome Mob Character. I was mostly looking for an otome game title to transalte; saw the MangaDex, read it, thought it was interesting, and leapt on it. Really, I just wanted something I was both interested in and something else aside from Sato-san so I could take breaks from translating that one if I ran into a wall. Predicting 3 week update gaps on that one; it is a currently updating story so we will see how often the author puts out chapters.

Right now, we’re all still in the middle of the Corona-chan madness, so I should be good to keep up with this pace. But, I am slowly starting to become required to actually head into the office for my job again. When the world goes back from being insane, I will probably give another update regarding update gaps in translations once I go back to my usual routine. For now though, those are my predicted translation gaps and more importantly, my personal goals. I really want to just hunker down and really get to work, as one of my resolutions for 2021 was to really ramp up the effort I put into learning Japanese.

But uh, that’ll have to wait though, as uhhhh Atelier Ryza 2 dropped and I am going to get no sleep this weekend!

Anyways, catch you all next translation update.

– Toasty

00. Prologue

Ah, this is an otome game.

I realized it, but there was nothing I could do.
For now,  I should take a rest.

「Hey, are you listening to me!?」

「Ahh, I’m listening, you know.」

Drinking black tea, I was warned by the girl two years younger than me.
To her question I replied with a half-truth, half-lie. After all, I’ve been asked so often I’m a little fed up with it.

「Then, Roy-sama—」

「Yes, he’s amazing, isn’t he?」

「That isn’t at all what I was saying! I knew it, you weren’t listening, were you!」

Oh no, that was quick.
Entering preaching mode, shifting from how I should follow Roy-sama’s example to the pride of Roy-sama. This time, I listen and make small interjections without mistaking the timing.
This 「Roy-sama」 made me realize I am in the world of an otome-game. I thought I had heard about his name, appearance, and position. Maa, I’ve only heard about it, but haven’t met him.
When I heard his name so much I wasn’t interested, but I realized he was a capture target in this otome game.
Roy Leonhard von Rosenhein, the first prince of Arvento, is a capture target in Your Star. I’m certain he was the main hero.
Your Star is the nickname, as the official name is lengthy, so I don’t remember it. In the first place, a guy knowing about otome games is strange.
My reason for knowing about it is simple, it’s because I helped my younger sister clear it. For each capture character, there was a different minigame and the results flags changed, and since she was bad in this area, I would do it for her.
Now, I don’t have a sister. I’m an only child. My younger sister is a story of my past life.
However, I need to relax.
I see the girl before my eyes. A source of information about Roy-sama I don’t need. The rival of Roy-sama’s route, Lyria von Ernst. In the game, she’s Roy-sama’s fiance, but it seems now she’s just a fiance candidate. From my position it seems she’s such a major contender, that it’s like she’s already the fiance.
This place is a corner of the vast garden of her estate. I, drinking tea and keeping her company, am the son of the Ernst family’s exclusive gardener. I’m an apprentice to my dad.
Even though I helped clear the game, and even though I hadn’t heard about it, my sister hadn’t mentioned a gardener or apprentice of the rival family.

Yes, I’m not even a mob.

It’s like the circumstances of something like reincarnation, but it’s something different than being a mob. There’s no harmful effects from reincarnation.
At the present, the tea-drinking rival in her route also loses in her love, but as she competes fair and square with the heroine, she does not fall into ruin or lose her life.
There won’t be any harm to Duke Ernst’s house, which is why it’s equal to the exclusive gardener’s household being secure.

In a sense, it’s like having no memories of the past life, huh?

I tilted my head at my current conditions I understood, but stopped thinking around the time the teacup became empty. I see, there’s no reason to worry or continue to worry about the matter.
For the time being, I lift the teacup towards the girl in front of me and say a brief comment.

「Refill.」

「Fill it up yourself.」

It was in a manner my mother from my past life would scold me.
Even if the exclusive maid is also lower in status, I can’t get involved as she’s outside of my social status. Lese majeste, does that exist in this country? If it did, it would be dangerous when I get caught. [T/N: So this took a while for me to puzzle out, but from how I eventually got it, MC asks for a refill, maid tells him to fill it himself, and while the maid is also lower in status, he’s concerned he’s below her.]
As for why I’m still at this kind of exchange, even now, is curious.

It’s the worst first impression.

Certainly, it was the worst first impression for each of us, meeting one year ago.
I don’t know if it will influence the otome game, but at that meeting, my life slowly changed.

Oh geez, here we go. I know I was planning to take on “She Was Both Called God, as Well as Satan”, but when this dropped on MangaDex and I saw it didn’t have a NovelUpdates, plus the raw was there, I had to jump on it.

Besides, I really, really, really have Otome Game novel fever. Righto, though! This chapter was a slight pain despite it being short. Please, God, grant my request and have them tag who is talking, so I can not have to guess half the time who is talking. Also, since this came about due to me reading the manga, I have decided to use their romanization of the names (not that I could do any better lmao)

To all my readers of “Aren’t You Too Sweet, Salt-God Sato-san?”, don’t worry. I don’t intend to let this new project interfere with its bi-weekly update schedule. All new projects will be second priority compared to that.

Anyways, I’ll see you guys all next update; I’m aiming for a three week pace (on Fridays, this one was dropped on Wednesday so I could stake my claim for working on this) as I have to juggle potentially three works, along with life in general. Sadly I’ve had to actually go back to work as in, at the office, so I suppose I’ll have to invest in a JP -> EN dictionary so I can translate at the office, haha.

20th Piece — The Story of Unrequited Love

This one’s still from Rinka’s perspective. But wow, a lot of you guys thought that Rinka was going to hop on the Oshio train. Let’s see if that’s the case, haha.

「Thank goodness—can you stand?」

Saying that, he reached out with his hand.
It was white, thin, and slender, completely like a girl’s, however if you look, you can tell it’s clearly a guy’s, that sort of hand.

「Y, yes……」

I, not understanding what I was doing, stand up after taking his extended hand.

—for the first time, I noticed that asphalt was rubbed into his right arm, and he was in a terrible state.
Such things like blood that was running, thin skin that is curled up like lint, were painful to look at.
However, it was completely like he didn’t experience any pain…

「Sorry, it’s because I pushed quite vigorously…… is there anywhere that hurts?」

「Eh, no…… I, rather than me…… that……」

It’s impossible to be worried about myself, I thought, mumbling ambiguous words, but my eyes were glued to his arm.
He slowly looked over—surprisingly, there he finally noticed the terrible spectacle of his arm.

「Uwaa, disgusting…… ah, but, it’s okay, it doesn’t hurt as much as it looks.」

Saying that, he smiled at me.
The truth, you don’t have room to worry about people and yet, to bring me peace of mind, laughed—

「—Rinka-chan!」

「Waa!?」

Suddenly, I was embraced from behind.
I was confused and then looked, seeing Koharu incessantly pushing herself onto me. [TN: Literally “pressed her face onto me.”]

「Ko, koharu……!?」

「I’m sorry, I’m really sorry, you know…… I, I was so scared that I couldn’t move……! I’m glad, I’m so happy…… thank you so much, Ojio-kun……!」 [T/N: Yep, Sato blubbering again for a mispronunciation.]

「No, it’s only a little…… Koharu! Instead of me, it’s him……!」

「—really, I’m fine, you know, there’s no injury.」

He made light of his injuries, using his words to cover it up.
I was surprised to see this gentleman, as he secretly concealed his right arm’s injury, then as if it was nothing at all, was smiling.

With this series of actions, I immediately understood his intentions, however to that extent…… at that time I tried to raise my voice and say it shouldn’t be like that.

「Are the two of you okay!?」

Late, Mayo-san comes running to us.
Mayo-san is the only one of us who was able to calmly overlook the situation, it seems.
Confirming that I didn’t have any injuries with a glance, she immediately turned towards the gentleman.
At the last moment, he hid his injured arm while saying such things as—

「I’m okay.」

—while smiling.
Mayo-san looked at his appearance, then she froze up for a moment, but immediately her usual gentle smile appeared on her face.

「—I see, that’s good, but the dust has made your face all dirty. Over there is the shop I work at, but at the very least, we can wash your face in the back?」

「……Thank you very much, I humbly accept your offer.」 [T/N: The vocab Oshio uses here is very formal in Japanese, so I tried to convey that here.]

「Yes, then, let’s go, Rinka-chan and Koharu, you too.」

「H…… ugu…… y, yes……!」 [T/N: The raw doesn’t have much either, it’s just a bunch of hiragana that doesn’t form a lot, so I got nothing.]

「My, my, we’ll have to wipe your face, Koharu-chan, I’ll lend you a towel.」

Mayo-san lightly stroked the sobbing Koharu’s face while saying 「there, there」 as she guided us to “hidamari”.

An uncertain feeling was starting to gather in my chest.
I don’t know what I should do, I feel like crying like a baby.

「What’s wrong, Rinka-chan? Come along, quickly.」

「…..Ma, Mayo-san…… I……」

I finally can’t stand it, and then when I try to complain, Mayo-san comes close to my ear,

「……try to understand his feelings.」

「……!」

Mayo-san sweetly smiled.
As expected, Mayo-san understood everything—

「Rinka-chan, truly, thank you.」

Saying that, she looked down at the potted plant held with her left arm.

—I’m not so different! [T/N: This one’s hard to translate, the raw is more like “Different, I’m not!”]
I, as much as him, thoughtlessly rushed out and caused trouble!
Because of me, I not only hindered the mood between the two of them, but Koharu’s first love has such a terrible wound……!
The one to blame, greatly and unsparingly, to shout angrily at……!

It was obvious to me that it was no good, but my sobbing leaked out.
In an uncontrollable whirlpool of emotions, despite trying to act like an adult to that much, I realized ultimately that it couldn’t be helped, I could assuredly say I was still a child.
My field of vision blurred and my chest tightened.

I remember the memory of the first time I lost sight of my parents when I was a young child.
Something like that, it couldn’t be helped, inside my chest was a feeling of hopelessness, so much it felt like it was going to burst.
Ahhh, this isn’t good, I’m at my limit—

At that time, a hand was placed on my shoulder.

「Eh……?」

A pretty hand.
I turn my head to look over my shoulder, and there is his figure.
He, in a different tone than not long ago, said.

「Rinka-chan…… right? Sato-san’s sister, right? Maa…… at any rate, thank you, for not saying anything to Sato-san about my arm’s injury.」[T/N: Yep, this is also intentional, makes sense since Oshio wouldn’t know, but just in case you were curious this isn’t a mistranslation.]

Receiving those words, the terribly miserable feeling I was shouldering came to an end.
After all, that’s it, right? I don’t have such things like the capability to be thankful for being blamed.

「N, no, wrong, that’s wrong, re, really, thank you, I, um……」

In front of his painful-to-look-at right arm, already my honest words won’t come out.
Incessantly, it’s shameful, it’s shameful……
Again, the corner of my eye becomes hot.

To my current state, he first looked down at me strangely, and before long, he sweetly smiled,

「As for the time people do something for you…」

「Eh?」

At that sudden prompt, my thoughts froze.
He, slowly crouching, and our gazes were now at a similar height once again.

「The time you people do something for you, what do you say?」

His smile was mysterious.
Somehow, by looking at it, my heart calmed down.

「Eh, um…… thank you, very, much…….?」

「Yep, don’t mention it, by the way for me, to you, there’s one more thing I have to thank you for.」

「What is it……?」

「Thank you for making me look good, in front of Sato-san, I absolutely don’t want to show her anything uncool.」

Saying that, he ruffled my hair like I was a child.

Normally, it should be a scene where you spit out abusive language such as, 「To the hair I went through great troubles to style, my goodness, your fat hand is rubbing against it, you misunderstanding guy, how filthy.」 [T/N: Translating this made me have to take a 10 minute break from how pesky it was to translate.]
……It’s supposed to happen……
It’s supposed to happen, and yet……

「Well, I’m also going, so some other time.」

He, finally saying that, then inhaled and went towards “hidamari”.
In the end, not even once did his smile fade. [T/N: The verb used here is “destroy” or “change”, but “smile change” doesn’t fit what the general feeling is as well.]

I also immediately had to return to “hidamari”, but my feet wouldn’t move.
Instead of that, finally I noticed my heartbeat was unusually noisy……

「Haa!?」

I felt myself slap my cheeks.
I was having a terrible fever.

「No, eh, it’s a lie, it’s a lie, it’s a lie!?」 [T/N: OH NO RINKA DON’T DO IT]

The throbbing is crazy, my thoughts aren’t coherent, that smile just now, doesn’t go away at all.

「It’s wrong, it’s wrong, it’s wrong, it’s wrong, because!!」

I immediately crouched to silence my body, which was noisily making such a claim to that extent.

It’s impossible to admit, absolutely it’s impossible to admit.
After all…

「I, towards Koharu’s first love……!?」

I had a feeling that if I said anything beyond that point, I can’t turn back, and with that being the case, I let out a groan of 「Uuuuu!」, and for the sake of overwriting that sensation I crumpled and stirred up my hair.

Sudou Rinka.
—as for this, this is the first page of the start of my unrequited love I never reach.

Oh no here we go. Rinka don’t do it, oh no she’s got airpods in—!

I realized what was about to happen around that Translator Note where I yelled 「don’t do it, Rinka」, though that feeling was settling in around when Rinka’s heartbeat was unusually noisy. It only took a few more lines for it to settle in. Heroine Number Two Getto!

This chapter was pretty fun to translate, same for the next one. I’m slowly getting better at getting ahead on translations, so I’m hoping we might be able to go weekly around the April timeframe. No promises.

I also was looking into another novel to translate, but no luck so far. I did want to say though, that if I pick up a new novel, that it will not affect the pace of this one. I think I’d rather make it that this one stays bi-weekly or weekly, and the other novel would start off as monthly as not to overload myself. I still have work, after all. If you have any suggestions for a new one to translate, feel free to toss them in the comments. Personally I’d be looking for more slice of life ones, and recently I’ve been binging Reika-sama. It’s so hard to stay focused at work when I’m reading it lmao

Anyways, I hope you guys are continuing to enjoy this story! See you all next time!

19th Piece — Ordinary Unrequited Love

Pre-Chapter Note: Wow, look at that, we have a chapter from Rinka’s point of view.  Also, Happy New Year! Sorry for being later in the afternoon to this one, Monster Hunter demo dropped and I lost track of time, haha.

「……what are you doing, Koharu?」

I—Sudou Rinka, said that with a sigh, looking at the strange sight outside the window.
She said she had an incoming call with her mother and rushed out of “hidamari”, and now, she was in front of the store embracing a certain young man and sobbing like a child.
Her voice could be heard, together with the full particulars of their conversation, through the window.

Next to me, Netsu-san laughed with a 「My, my」. [T/N: I really wanted to leave this as “ara ara” but I’m trying not to have as much JP as possible.]

「That’s Koharu-chan’s date, isn’t it?」

「I wish she could just disappear……」

Even for an instant, towards my older cousin’s disgraceful behavior, I felt my face burn up.
Geez, it’s just genuinely pitiable……

「If she took the clothes Mayo-san chose for her, I thought she’d have a little more self-confidence…… the expectations and strategy for the amateur lover Koharu, among other things, has gone to waste.」

「My, that sort of thing is also bittersweet and good, isn’t it? Mr. Date is also gently steering her, it might go unexpectedly smooth, right?」

「How?」

I say it in a tone that naturally hints at something.
However, to that sort of disagreeable way of speaking, Mayo-san furrows an eyebrow.

「As for Rinka-chan, does she not have any interest?」

「I have no interest.」

With a biting feeling, I cut things off with a single stroke.
Mayo-san laughed with another 「My, my」 as if this reply was obvious.

…….Mayo-san is twenty one now, certainly.
Every time, I’m surprised that a college student is this much of an adult.

「……you’re still only a child,  you know, all of you.」

I sighed once, then said.

「Besides, it’s dishonest, whether you’re a middle school student or a high school student, it’s all the same. No matter how much you grow, no one truly loves you, because in the end they’re only thinking about themselves.」 [T/N: When Rinka meets Ren it’s gonna be a party. ]

I looked at the sobbing Koharu while muttering that.
As for the current status of her unrequited love, I stopped thinking, and repeated the words in my head.
In the end, not everyone is in love, it’s just a crush.
Such thoughts seem cold, I thought, and the self-deprecation almost leaked out of me, when at that time—Mayo-san let out a sound.

「Rinka-chan is surprisingly a maiden, you know?」

「Ha!?」

The reply I got back wasn’t what I was thinking, and I unconsciously raised my voice.
Mayo-san’s way of chuckling is weird and unbearable as she stifles a laugh.

「W, what are you laughing at!?」

「Fufu, no, it’s nothing bad, only Rinka-chan is around that age.」

「U, uu, what is that supposed to mean……!」 [T/N: Literally here it’s just “U, uu, what, that…!” so work with me here.]

When I seriously objected, she laughed again, but I managed to endure it.
Are you satisfied……!

At Mayo-san’s 「Ufufu」 from above, I once again looked outside the window…… and saw something.

Finally having calmed down, the sobbing Koharu and “Oshio-kun” were passed by someone on a one-person bike.
A kind of boy who would have wax in their uniform to raise their hair up.
I was familiar with it.

「Huh? A guy in the basketball club……」

Yes, it was the boys in the same basketball club.
I was certain they were returning home from school after playing somewhere.
From the top of the bike, they curiously looked at the sobbing Koharu while passing on the road in front of the store.

……well, if a high school girl who’s been dolled up is crying in the middle of the street, then people will come to see what is going on.
That’s what I was thinking, then it happened.

One of the boys in the basketball club, because he took his eyes off the road, hit one of the flowerpots lined up in front of “hidamari”.

「Ah!?」

I raised my voice, but there was nothing I could do.
The lovely decorative plant and the bowl it was in vigorously fell over, and then rolled into the roadway.

「……Ah, that’s not good……!」

「……what are you doing, Ryohei……!」

「……hahahaha……!」

Through the window, the laughter of the basketball club member reached.
They did not even pick up the flower pot, and of all things escaped on their bikes, accelerating away.

「Those guys……!」

I rush out of “hidamari”.

「Wa, wait, Rinka-chan!? Are you alright……!」

From behind, I can hear Mayo-san’s warning voice, but I couldn’t stop.
I know!
Mayo-san never tells anyone, but that was something important as she carefully raised it herself!

Just before I leap out towards the road, the surprised faces of the Koharu and “Oshio-kun” are in the fleeting corners of my vision, but I don’t have time to spare.
I quickly picked up the fallen potted plant, then—

「Rinka-chan!」

I hear a shriek that is certainly Koharu’s, then I finally notice it.

「Eh……」

The piercing sound of a car horn. [T/N: Rinka’s about to get isekai’d.]
The headlights filled my field of vision.

「No way……」

My body seemed to stiffen up, and my whole body went cold.

At this time, your life was supposed to play before your eyes, or so I hear, but it seems this was too abrupt and the screening preparations couldn’t be done. [T/N: Literally “a revolving lantern would flow”, but in my research this was a reference to the phenomenon of your life flashing before your eyes. I changed the text to fit the “movie screening” metaphor Rinka makes.]
In the middle of the slowly flowing time, in my head, the simple thought came to mind, 「Even for me, what a cliched death」.

Then in the moment the intense light tries to take me—

「—tch!」 [T/N: Man do I hate it when all they use is the 「tsu」 character because it means nothing.]

My body, which was heavy like a stone, sprang up.
It wasn’t it, it sprang up.

From the side, “Oshio-kun” had leapt, came, and tightly grasped me.

「Tsu!?」

The intense light and the sound of the car horn fade away.
The angry male driver can be heard in the distance, burning with emotion, but I’m not involved anymore.
First of all, I need to understand the state of affairs.

Now I’m on the other side of the road, and the figure of the boy covering is lying face down.
With that much force, enough to knock a person down, he doesn’t have any injuries. His arm is around the back of my head, used as a cushion.
Naturally, in substitute for me, his arm shaved up against the asphalt—

「Are you okay?」

At that voice, I gasped in surprise.
He, “Oshio-kun”, looked over me, and asked that.

I, who hadn’t collected my thoughts, said,

「I, I’m okay…」

With that reply, he sweetly and gently smiled.

「Thank goodness—can you stand?」

Saying that as if it were completely ordinary, he extended a helping hand.

Our boy at it again. Honestly I thought while translating this it was going to be Ren that dashed in, you know, for the B couple to start.

Anyways, not a lot to say here other than Happy New Year! I look forward to continuing to provide translations for this web novel going forward into 2021. Sorry for the delay today, but Monster Hunter is so gooooood.

18th Piece – “Matching”

Pre-Chapter Notes: Nothing today, but have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! There’s some slightly more serious stuff in the Post-Chapter notes, though.

「Oshi… o…… kun……?」

Oshio Sota, sixteen years old.
Right now I’m suddenly confronting the biggest crisis of my life.

But first, I have an embarrassing story to tell.
After inviting Sato Koharu on a weekend date, day and night I looked forward to her casual clothing like mad, you see.
Of course, when she’s in a uniform she’s charming, but that is to say, casual clothes are special.

I was looking forward to it too much, to the point every day when I’d find a picture of a girl in casual clothes, I’d vaguely think about 「Sato-san in these sort of clothes……」 or something like that. I’d then become flustered and shake off such thoughts, feeling bad, and this has been repeated dozens of times.

—as expected, I’m in high spirits.

I scold myself.

—You’ll be disqualified as a man if you can’t say 「It looks good」 in a sleek and stylish way.

I was inspired to do so just this morning.

However, however, however!
This is so…!

「…pretty.」

Though my intention was to say something not unrelated to the words that spilled out, I became flustered and shut my mouth.
Even if 「It suits you」 is at best, a tall hurdle to jump over, saying that without preface, what were you thinking, me!?
Even if it’s the truth, it’s way too creepy to say it like that!

「……dsome.」

But fortunately, it didn’t seem to reach Sato-san’s ears.
During the same time, Sato-san seemed to whisper something soft, but during all of the chaos I wasn’t able to make it out.

Nevertheless, it’s risky, this is risky.
For me, Oshio Sota, I’m still in the middle of the biggest crisis of my life.

My heart rate was increasing, my body temperature rising.
The area near the back of my head becomes hot, and suddenly it becomes difficult to even make eye contact with her.

To that extent, all of my preparation and work into saying something like 「It suits you」 or a similar template, with one blow, is scattered to pieces.

「T……!」 [T/N: You know when all there is the “tsu” character there’s not much I can do haha]

It’s a miscalculation, a perfect miscalculation.
It’s impossible that the casual clothes of your first love have this kind of destructive power!
And then, without mentally preparing, running into Sato-san now!

—then, finally thinking about it here, I realize that I’m holding onto Sato-san’s arm.

「……Ah!? S, sorry!」

I snap my hand back in order to separate us, laughing with a 「hahaha」 to smooth it over.
To match this, Sato-san also gave a 「A, ahaha」 with a strained smile.

「N, no, t-th-thank you, Oshio-kun.」

……Eh?
Sato-san?
Where are you looking……?

「I, I didn’t expect you meet you here, you know….. by the way……」

……eh?
Sato-san?
Why are you talking to the crack in the asphalt?

Seeing that, Sato-san covers her mouth and her shoulders start to shake.
Then, when I saw the direction of her gaze was no longer at the level of 「looking away」, I thought the worst.

It can’t be…… she’s laughing at my fashion sense!?

「I came to a second-hand clothes store together with Ren, as I thought to buy some clothes, but…」

It could be said it was a miracle I was able to reply honestly.
However now, my tension suddenly went from heaven to hell.

……concerning Sato-san, is my fashion so miserable she can’t bear to see it……?

I was in the depths of despair.
Frankly, I just want to die.

「He, heee…… meeting here, it’s unexpected……」

Sato-san talks to the asphalt without looking at me at all.

……once again, her fashion was completely lovely.
Like a refreshing, yet calming summer, her fashion maximizes her charm, which was both cute and beautiful.

It doesn’t mean that I distrust Ren and his sister, but maybe I might be something to laugh at no matter how much I dressed up.
That sort of thing is evident.

If that’s the case, then it isn’t a situation where you feel even more down, it seems.
There’s something I should say.

「—Sato-san.」

I ready myself and call out her name.
Sato-san’s shoulders spring up in one big movement, her hand covers her mouth, and she slowly turns her head this way.
Her face is turning red, her eyes are darting all over the place. [T/N: Literally “eyes are swimming badly”, but that sounded clunky.]

「W, whwhwh, what is it, Oshio-kun……!?」

The fact it might be so bad that she can’t make eye contact is about to break my heart, but it’s irrelevant for now.
Such a thing is less important.

I look straight at Sato-san, smiling as always, then say the words I practiced countless times.

「—those clothes, they really suit you, you know, I think they’re cute.」

Those words came out unexpectedly smooth, but they came from the bottom of my heart, there’s no mistaking it.
After saying it, I became so embarrassed I wanted to die, but I had no regrets.
Then, I received Sato-san’s……

「How?」

How?

Suddenly, she let out a strange voice, tilting her head to the side, and in that moment, Sato-san crumbled on the spot.
—the clothes she had gone to great lengths to get were going to get dirtied.
Thinking that, I hurried, and extended both of my arms, putting them under her armpits.

「Uwaa……! What’s wrong? Did you hurt yourself when you almost fell over?」

Worried, I look about her troubled expression.
There, I see in the pupils of her eyes, something that begins to look like moisture……

「Uwaaaaa…… that’s a relief……!」

She was crying.
Sato-san embraced me, just like that day, not minding our surroundings and bursting into tears.

「Wait, Sato-san!?」

「It suits you…… Ojio-kun is also…… so handsome, you know…..!」 [T/N: No, this is not a typo, the raw has her mispronounce Oshio’s name, probably because she’s crying.」

「Eh!? N, no, er, thank you……!? First though, you should calm down!?」

Now, I didn’t understand what it was anymore, but anyhow until she stopped crying, I held her in the same position.

……handsome, huh.

It was something very small, but I was proud.
Next time, I’ll have to treat Ren to some ramen.

Every time I translate these chapters, I need something for my heart. They really are so cute together, man.

Anyways, not a lot to say for this chapter. But, I did have something to say. As we move on into 2021, I did have a bit of a New Year’s Resolution. I’m deciding between one of two; and that is either (a) I’d like to eventually get my translating skill up to where I can release a chapter weekly by June or (b) take on a new web novel to translate.

I haven’t quite figured out which one I’d like to do, though. The first is a bit easier, but I do like having the two week pace as it gives me more time for proofreading, cultural research where needed, and revising translations. The second would be nice, but if I keep to the two week translation as not to get buried, I’d probably need to reduce the rate of chapters from every other week to every three weeks, hopefully avoiding overlap as much as possible with the other work I take on. I do intend to stay a one man operation at this point in time, which slightly influences this choice.

If you guys have any input on it, do leave it down below. I really do enjoy doing these translations and I know you guys do like them too, so let’s try to find a good compromise area, hm?

Lastly, as this is my last post for 2020, I want to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Thanks for sticking by me for these past four months (wow, time flies!) and I hope you’ll stick by me as we go into the new year.

Until then,
Toasty

17th Piece – “Even While Dreaming, I See For The First Time”

Pre-Chapter Notes: This title was so annoying to translate I actually had to ask my Japanese teacher for help.

As you might know, I’m a very shy person.
Particularly when meeting people for the first time, because for someone like an apparel store employee who strongly shortens the distance between us, you could say they are my natural enemy.

At the point in time when they start a conversation I panic, I forget what I’m talking about, and before I know it, the store employee has a bitter smile in front of me.
Therefore, I don’t have good memories of apparel shops, however… as for “hidamari”, Mayo-san differed.

Mayo-san was completely similar to a plain flower who, while gracefully smiling, patiently listened to the me who was bad at chatting, and had a pleasant smell.
Moreover, her tolerance is definitely amazing.
Of course her breasts are large, but it’s mainly about what’s on the inside.

It takes a few minutes to accept advice while wrapped in a mother-like tolerance.
I wasn’t used to seeing myself standing in the middle of the mirrors.

「…….」

I exhale.
I’m so moved, I’m speechless.

Even for me who comparatively knows nothing about fashion, I understand, this is……

「Fufu, it’s a good feeling, isn’t it, Koharu-chan?」

From my shadow, suddenly Mayo-san asks that while making an appearance.
From the other side, Rinka-chan suddenly also makes an appearance, with three people in the mirror.

「It will change, you know, but Koharu, you’re bad at talking but the face and style are good.」

Rinka-chan’s unkindness couldn’t be heard, as my consciousness was carried away by seeing myself in the mirror.

A white blouse that had a feeling of transparency, a skirt with a flower flair.
It was a simple combination, but as for me who wears normal clothes, the impression was completely different.
With Rinka-chan’s help, she assisted in also braiding my hair, which all came together to give something like an adult-like and calm image of a fresh summer.

「I put in earthy colors which are currently trendy, the blouse’s fabric is linen that’s refreshing to look at, and looking at both top and bottom’s silhouettes, Koharu’s side is good because the emphasis is on the texture while being simple to look at. How is it?」

「I… it’s very good……!」

Aaah, my vocabulary is reproachful.
But I can’t say anything more. [T/N: Literally “I can’t say a great undertaking”]

It’s good, it’s very good.
This, definitely, Oshio-kun will also……!

「I’ll buy it! I’ll buy it, then like this, I’ll wear it and go!」

I was breathing hard through my nose while saying those words.
At that, Mayo-san who was watching unconsciously let out a laugh, using a tablet.

「Then, the price is somewhere around here.」

「……Eh? Is it okay for something like this to be cheap?!」

「There’s an evening discount of 20% applied, you know?」 [T/N: Where the HELL can I find a store that gives me 20% off for shopping in the evening.]

Sweetly and gently smiling, Mayo-san says that.

An evening discount, that’s it, it seems……?
It could be that, I think, or it could also be a fortunate miscalculation.

「Thank you very much!」

「It was my pleasure.」

Thus, I paid for the clothes to Mayo-san who had a friendly smile on her face, and the price tag was cut.
At that time, my smartphone vibrated, receiving a message.

「Hm? It’s my mother.」

「Kiyomi-san? It must be something important.」

「Maybe it’s an errand or something else, I think…… for now, a little something has come up. Mayo-san, for all the various things today, thank you very much!」

「It’s fine, Koharu-chan is something like a cute child, so if that’s the case I’ll give a warm welcome. Until next time. Also, on rainy days we have a 30% discount, and during thunderstorms we have a 50% discount.」

「I’ll talk a bit with Mayo-san before I go.」

「Got it! Then, excuse me!」

I give a slight bow to Mayo-san, grasp my vibrating smartphone and leave 「hidamari」.

……Are they overdoing the discounts?

I become late, and then have those sorts of doubts well up from in me, however as I answer the phone and think I hit the “Answer” button with my finger, at that time.

「Waa!?」

My clumsy nature is awful.
No more than several seconds after leaving “hidamari” there was an incident.
I’m not used to heels, and was very conscious of my smartphone, and stepped in a crack in the asphalt, tripping and falling forward at full strength.

—I fell.
The clothes that Mayo-san carefully picked out for me, they’ll become dirty—

In the middle of believing that, at that time.
Something seized my wrist from behind, and I barely escaped the worst-case outcome.

「Uwaa?!」

「Sorry…… are you okay?」

「I-I’m sorry! Thank you for saving me……!」

While saying my apology, I turned to look behind me……

「Huh? Sato-san?」

—simultaneously, the smartphone in the palm of my hand stopped vibrating and my heartbeat also came to a stop.

「Oshi… o…… kun……?」

While my mouth hung open like a goldfish, I said that name.
Yes, it was Oshio-kun who had taken my hand.

The way home is the exactly the opposite way of coming here, why is he here?
No, more importantly, I should say my thanks first.
Or perhaps I should say Oshio-kun’s hand is slender and pretty, but they are stronger than what I thought as I actually am touching them.

All of those various thoughts that I had were blown away to a faraway place by a single reality.

Right in front of me, was Oshio-kun.
Even counting the times I was dreaming, for the first time I see Oshio-kun in plain clothes.

—now, from here, I have a very embarrassing story to tell.
For me, one of the main reasons I invited Oshio-kun for a weekend date was that by all means, I wanted to see Oshio-kun in casual clothing.
Of course, at school in his uniform and at the cafe in his uniform he was charming, however, casual clothes are special.

Therefore, from the time Oshio-kun invited me on a date, every day my delusions continue to grow bigger.
Whether I look at men’s fashion magazines from a convenience store or look at a drama actor, in my head I would fantasize about Oshio-kun’s plain clothes by changing it to a “Oshio-kun” version.
Because of that, I would be anguished, knowing that for certain, that I was unpleasant.

—I’m expecting too much, aren’t I?

It was a few days ago I recognized how especially obvious it was.

—Oshio-kun looks good in any clothes.

Yes, without hesitation. I can say, you have to have enough motivation in fashion to say something like that, which I gained this morning.

However, however, however!
The truth, not a delusion or a dream, the truth of a Oshio-kun in casual clothes—the hurdles I raised day and night, were easily exceeded!
That kind of destructive power! That kind of destructive energy! [T/N: Sato says the same exact things but it can be translated anyways so figured to mix it up.]

「……handsome.」

Unconsciously, the word came out from my gaping mouth.

Man, these two are so precious.

I’m also happy because this chapter was nice and easy, haha. As for things on my end, I actually just finished my first year of (formal, actual) Japanese classes, so I’m feeling pretty good.  Translating all of this has definitely been good practice for me, and I’m starting to recognize more grammar structures. Unfortunately my workplace has been making me come in physically, but at the very least I can proofread this at work by bringing in the printed document.

Also, while I don’t make a big deal out of shouting out people, a personal friend of mine asked if I could at least signal boost his art Twitter. If you’re a fan of Touhou, go ahead and check it out here.

Anyways, just like Thanksgiving, I’m aiming for the next release the Wednesday before the holiday, but if I don’t post on that day, then I have likely already gone into full holiday vegetable mode. I’m going to try my best to get it in there but the holidays have a way of sapping away any will to do anything productive, haha.

In case I don’t see you all then, I’ll wish you all a preemptive Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
